i have reservations about that shirt

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:36 (eleven years ago)

yeah I do too. I like the print itself but there are issues with a lot of the details. Looks like probably a "n".

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:39 (eleven years ago)

also, could not find the "fun shirts" thread for some reason

I just want a stylish top or even a hoodie for autumn. Bought one but had to take it back cos it had a huge neckline that just didn't look right on me. But finding anything else has been hard. Can I still wear a hooded top at 34 and not look like a dad who's just taken up jogging? What are the alternatives for a fairly casual but cool looking top and how can I comnine it with t shirts or jackets these days?

www.perry.como (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)

American apparel hoodies are good but people will probably just think you're Burial since you're in the uk?

, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:57 (eleven years ago)

he is burial

mattresslessness, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 17:02 (eleven years ago)

slip jig (seandalai), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 17:04 (eleven years ago)

I tend to wear cotton or wool zip-up round-neck hoodless tops in autumn/winter - great for layering and you still get to pretend you're not Burial. YMC sale usually a good source but it's the wrong time of year for that.

two weeks pass...

yeah do it

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 13:54 (eleven years ago)

grrr... i bought some delightful knitted jumpers last year but they barely lasted the winter before they shrank and/or lost their shape. reluctant to go and buy a load all over again.

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 13:56 (eleven years ago)

also, are we going to see a return to nordic and christmas-jumperesque styles again this year or is that played out?

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 13:56 (eleven years ago)

i hope you followed the two cardinal rules of knitwear care--1) never hang them, 2) unless you get some kind of ridiculous stain only dry clean them once at the end of the season.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 14:00 (eleven years ago)

no i did not do either of those things.

but thanks.

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 14:09 (eleven years ago)

cad what do recommend for intermittent freshening?

carl agatha, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 14:21 (eleven years ago)

yeah, good point. I guess 100% real wool shouldn't really smell but other fibres would.

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 14:24 (eleven years ago)

what other fibres? top man poly mix type stuff is not designed (in both senses) to last longer than a season anyway.

caek, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:01 (eleven years ago)

cotton?

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:02 (eleven years ago)

well the main thing is that anything that is knitted and claims to be machine washable is lying

caek, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:05 (eleven years ago)

or synthetic fibers

caek, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:05 (eleven years ago)

Wool is easier to launder than cotton! Cotton loses that silky sheen after 1-2 washes. But with wool I find use cool water and a gentle soap, soak it for 10 mins in a bucket, lightly swish it around w your hands, then press dry in a rolled up towel and dry flat. The usual instructions for all delicates.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

what i do is run me jumpers up a flagpole

lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

Women's knits are harder bc a lot of them are intended to be worn right on your skin so you do have to wash them.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:07 (eleven years ago)

otm, here is laurel's advice in internet content format http://putthison.com/post/1243826650/q-and-answer-how-do-i-wash-my-sweaters-conor

caek, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:07 (eleven years ago)

Wishing I had more time/knowledge/flat-drying space to take more care of my clothes. It would certainly save a lot of money.

xpost aha!

hmmm first thing that comes to mind is hang gently over a drying rack, hit w/some febreze (febreez? febreeze?) and leave overnight.

also this is true and my original advice is unfortunately male-centric in that i assume you're generally wearing a shirt under yr knits.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:16 (eleven years ago)

I purposefully felted a pair of knitted mittens once, it was mostly the rubbing action and the HOT water that made them fuzz and gnarl. So stick with cold and swish GENTLY and don't rub the surface against itself, for maximum care.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:18 (eleven years ago)

a lot of jumpers I'm seeing on the racks have a very wide neckline - not quite a boat neck, but still significantly wider than i'm used to. how the heck am i supposed to wear these? t-shirts look dreadful underneath. am i even meant to wear anything under them or a regular shirt or what? i don't think i can pull these off but i'm always quite frustrated as often i like the designs.

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:42 (eleven years ago)

example?

I'm going to reveal myself as a disgusting savage and admit that I more or less never wash my winter outer-layer jumpers.

caek, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 21:36 (eleven years ago)

very excited for knitwear

gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 22:53 (eleven years ago)

i had some very good luck thrifting last month and have a some great heavyweight geometric patterned sweaters to bust out as soon as the weather gets cold enough

one is 1970s from the harvard co-op, sort of a fairisle type but with triangular & daimond motifs in various blues & greens

the other is an incredible dries van noten of unknown vintage that was $7, possibly the best deal ever. its a cyan and royal blue optic diamond pattern on the upper chest, with rugby stripes in the same colors on the abdomen & forearms. i love it

gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 23:17 (eleven years ago)

i could probably have just uploaded images but i also enjoy descibing clothes so i did that too

Abandoned Amusement/FUN SHIRTS (seandalai), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 11:31 (eleven years ago)

oh man this eve I visit the tailor to pick up an eBayed TWEED SUIT I'm so psyched.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:29 (eleven years ago)

I'm gonna wear it like crazy. it's a slightly wide-lapeled YSL thing

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:29 (eleven years ago)

I should combine with knitwear

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:30 (eleven years ago)

keeping the tailoring kinda loose on it. just slightly floppy and comfy.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:31 (eleven years ago)

where are your favourite places to get clothes? Round my way it's pretty much TK Maxx all the way. Mens' outlets are generally very expensive and deal in the G-Star/Super Dry variety. Secondhand shops rarely sell decent stuff - mostly old men's suits and crappy t-shirts from Blue Inc. Have never got the hang of online shopping, and the idea of buying clothes without trying them on / seeing them in the flesh terrifies me. Still, I'd be interested in where else I could look. I'm able to get into London fairly easily.
