seems i'm guilty of this.. for my birthday i asked my mom to get me "a couple of shirts that look like what you'd buy for dad" from eddie bauer

I think this is what I was shooting for in the past when I was trying to nail down seinfeld-as-inspiration

Of course like every ironical adoption of "regular amurican" style it has to be done with subtle touches to make sure you don't actually mistake the person for a regular amurican

there's def a big casual/new balance sneakers/track pants thing going on w/art people, but I don't think it's the same as a.) what someone like dev is doing or b.) what some of the late 80's weekend dad aesthetic folks are doing

and there's just not a lot of distance between the latter two things and just the fashion revival cycle doing what it does

the day i see a stylish young person rocking a mock tn is when i will know im truly old

the only turtleneck i own is a 90s black eddie bauer i found at value village that is appealingly boxy. various downtown workwear brands are making turtlenecks again if my instagram is anything to go by tho so you can probably find one with a contemp fit p easy

i have a friend who is actively trying to bring the mock neck back. it works, i guess. i dont understand fashion

i think this kind of stuff is part of the inevitable reaction to like, #suitup, the cult of 'tailoring' and other general menswear trends over the last decade? i think positioning dressing like this as 'just dressing like, yknow, regular people or w/e' is obv super disingenuous and i think that chinavision is right in saying the specifics arent necessarily the same but i think theres a general shared exhaustion with certain ideas of 'style' thats both part of fashions cyclical nature and the lifecycle of aesthetic moments

like u can never find cool old jeans anymore, theyre all in the pipeline

the "real" thrift shop by me closed down years ago and now the only ones around are the curated vintage shops

and maybe the clothes that are old now are shittier quality than the clothes that were old 20 years ago idk just spitballin

But yeah I definitely think the market has developed such that you just don't find "treasures" in salvation army stores. The employees also pick over the donations and sell/keep them.

employee thing is only a side issue bc finding the right shops to vulture around should factor in staff profiling along with eloborate theories about possible stocks based on local populations depending on potential donations givers and competing customers.

certain things it seems insane and impossible when you pick them up for almost nothing like a v beautiful leather biker jacket i got about a year ago for not v much money, i mean there are things i can't imagine ever just like giving away like that I mean surely if you're too old to look dignified you would have someone grateful to have yr expensive calfskin leather trousers.
