getting a dog totally pushed me off the fence about having kids

OK for a few seconds I thought you'd had some terrible accident that was stopping you from having kids idk

I don't know how you USAians stand it!! It all makes me so angry and simultaneously thankful for some sense in the UK :(

kinder, Thursday, 17 October 2013 21:27 (twelve years ago)

I figure the 18 weeks of unpaid maternity leave starts to seem like a pretty good deal when you get into 4-5 years of daycare costs. We pay about $140 a week here in the USA whereas that figure is closer to per day in Australia. I'm fact every friend of mine in Australian put their careers on hold for 4 years because daycare was costing near or as much as they were earning.

woah did you see that hummingbird over there? anyway, meth (sunny successor), Saturday, 19 October 2013 04:36 (twelve years ago)

That seems really cheap to me? I think it's a ton more expensive here. I know several women who had to quit because what they were paying in daycare meant that it just wasn't worth it for them to continue working.

oh "At the top of the scale, parents around Boston can shell out as much as $2,500 a month on one infant’s care – more than a month’s worth of food, sometimes even more than rent or a mortgage payment. Over 12 months, they’ll spend more than the cost of a school year at a state college."

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:10 (twelve years ago)

DAMMIT WHY IS EVERYTHING IN THIS STUPID STATE SO EXPENSIVE?

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:10 (twelve years ago)

There were some places in Chicago that I called that charged that much. The cheapest place I found was about $820/month.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:32 (twelve years ago)

To be fair to Boston, my BU tuition is less than my U of MD would have been by about 20k. This is what happens when you live less than three miles from an actual state, and when your own non-state does not offer your program at their barely-accredited non-state school.

So thanking BU, sorry for expensive :(

quincie, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

You're doing a distance learning thing through BU? Neat! I didn't know that.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:42 (twelve years ago)

Yes! All my classes are online (with weekly simultaneous sessions with my section) and then I do my field internships in DC. I've been really pleased with the program so far, definitely rigorous. I'll come up to visit campus one of these days, and what the hell maybe I should actually go to graduation, unlike with grad degree #1.

quincie, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

But anyway back to hair; I am starting to think I should stay long for as long as possible. As long as possible I think means that at some point--but maybe not for a couple of years--I'll have to deal with the going gray transition. Or maybe the ombre look will be a thing again by that time? I'm pretty committed to not dyeing.

quincie, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

i am wearing my hair down (not clipped up) for the first time at work since i can remember and it feels really weird. my secret is out and everyone knows i have stringy 70s man hair.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

^^^this is me, too! It has been so so so hot (still is) and I cannot BEAR to have it touching my neck and shoulders and back, ick. On the rare occasion it is down, it kinda freaks both me and spouse out!

quincie, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 21:27 (twelve years ago)

I just got mine all chopped off! It's tiny at the back and there's a little bit of graduated bob at the front.

kinder, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)

Mine's nearly the same way now. It's 'growing out', but I really like it the way it is at the moment! Maybe I'll hit the pause button. If I do, then I need to get the stylist to neaten up the front a bit next time - that bit is a bit too growy-outy.

ljubljana, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 23:29 (twelve years ago)

I want to ask you for a pic, kinder, but can't remember the last time I saw a pic of yours and so am not sure whether you are a pic person....

ljubljana, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 23:30 (twelve years ago)

not really! I tried to take a pic and it was hard to get a good idea of what it actually looks like :|
I think I asked for something similar to what you went for i.e. what it looks like tied back but with some front bits..

kinder, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 23:38 (twelve years ago)

I've been delaying and delaying a haircut to save $$ but enough is enough--I've hit my personal wall and can go no further. Calling tomorrow.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

Yes! 'What it looks like tied back but with some front bits' is still my goal. I almost have it right now.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

in orbit, you are too damn stylish not to have nice hair. I was just thinking about you today and wishing you would take me shopping, not that I need to be spending $ on clothes.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

lol I am so not stylish in my daily life tho. Esp in summer when it's too hot for clothes because I'm not a "less is more" person when it comes to body coverage, I just desperately wear whatever covers me and isn't stifling. I need my hair to do a lot of heavy lifting, style-wise, because I'm not doing it any other way. Okay, hair and nails. But that's it.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 01:30 (twelve years ago)

Ah, choosing not to style for practical reasons is one thing, but having it going on whenever you wanna is another. I seen your pics, lady. Anyway, you deserve a haircut!

ljubljana, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 01:37 (twelve years ago)

dying my hair black for halloween tomorrow night - kind of excited, haven't had black hair since college :D

That's awesome and yes definitely visit. :) I didn't go to graduation for my MA and and sometimes I wish I did considering I was so hungover that I fell asleep during commencement for my undergrad degree.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:03 (twelve years ago)

My hair is really dark and long right now. Well, for me. I want to get it cut and colored before I start new job but I also want to get a new tattoo and now I'm trying to figure out which I want more because I don't think I can afford all three.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:04 (twelve years ago)

Ooooooh, Veg, I dyed my hair black once! It looked surprisingly good but IT DID NOT WASH OUT so. Uh. Beware.

Wait new job, ENBB?

carl agatha, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:20 (twelve years ago)

Yeah :). It all happened really quickly (interview and offer in the same day) but I got a new and, hopefully better in many many ways, position in one of the hospitals here and I start in a couple weeks!

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:23 (twelve years ago)

(I said a little more about it on the dad fotos thread)

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:25 (twelve years ago)

Aw yay I'm really happy for you!

carl agatha, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:30 (twelve years ago)

Thanks so much! I'm think it's going to be a really good opportunity and it had gotten to the point where I was so unhappy I was thinking about resigning without another job (which I really couldn't do) so it couldn't have happened at a better time. :)

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:34 (twelve years ago)

Oh super yay, ENBB! Would love to hear more but I guess I should head to dads thread.

and for god's sake OMG OMG OMG in orbit that pic is next level, who the heck is DOOD and how was he so lucky?

quincie, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 03:50 (twelve years ago)

Also, what is going on with his hand and the cig box roll, I am so confused.

quincie, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 03:51 (twelve years ago)

I love that pic of you io :) it makes me want to revisit black!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 03:57 (twelve years ago)

I don't mind it not washing out, I'm planning on it being a permanent change so Halloween is just a good excuse for a hair coloring :)

Oh that was my then boyfriend, either 2003 or -4. We're at a Halloween party, standing in a big photo-op coffin. He was the one who didn't like maple syrup because "it tastes like trees."

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 18:39 (twelve years ago)

He was "a greaser" that year and I was Veronica from Archie, hence the black hair.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

awesome kissing posture, io. very impressed over here.

woah did you see that hummingbird over there? anyway, meth (sunny successor), Friday, 1 November 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)

Man, I wish I was still as cool as I was in 2004! Of course I didn't think I was at the time....
