here's a menswear question. i am going for a job interview today. i will be interviewed by MY CURRENT BOSS and HIS BOSS. in a little office on the same floor i work on now. several co-workers also have interviews for the same job. how do i dress to impress without seeming like a tit, given that my normal work steez is jeans and t-shirts?

so what do your boss and his boss wear to work? i don't think you want to out-dress them. without more info i'd say maybe nicer khakis or wool trousers with a sportcoat and a shirt with a quiet pattern?

but if your boss's boss wears a suit, then wear a suit.

they don't wear suits or ties. they wear nice shirts and either jeans or trousers. so i'll match up i think. the nut of my conundrum ultimately is whether to bust out nice shoes. i think i probably will.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)

yes do it

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)

wear a sportcoat if you think it won't be weird

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)

i don't have a sportcoat :/

possibly it is time for a little shoe polishin'!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 16:13 (twelve years ago)

don't forget to wear yr sleeve garters

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 16:13 (twelve years ago)

ok not everything goes with black but as a counter to i'd imagine it's hard to coordinate well with black say

fwiw I think some of those are hideous

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:02 (twelve years ago)

one color that goes well with black is black

乒乓, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:05 (twelve years ago)

dark shirts are seen worn regularly by scientist who consider themselves well dressed (i.e. wear hats indoors).

caek, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

those color combos (dot com) are mostly awful

black suit + a shirt or tie in a bright saturated color = lol u are at prom

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)

I particularly like ColorCombo10, aka "Everyday Is Halloween"

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)

i don't wear a lot of black because it tends to make me look sallow & washed out

even near-blacks like midnight blue and deep charcoal grey are much more forgiving than pure black

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:17 (twelve years ago)

that is not a problem for me, which is good given the amount of black I have to wear when performing

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)

i'm a "summer" btw

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)

i am wearing black jeans

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)

uniqlo's fall line-up is looking pretty boring. wish i picked up some of their strange looking shirts from this summer.

Spectrum, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 03:34 (twelve years ago)

decided that these uniqlo socks are beneath me and i hate them

r|t|c, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 12:38 (twelve years ago)

to each his own.

it's mostly shit now besides the socks imo, tho worth a look for the odd freak hit. they had great tweed jackets last year, really simple cut and good quality. also linen blazers earlier this year.

and the button down oxford shirts are the best thing they do.

Wantaway striker (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 12:39 (twelve years ago)

even the wine and rust etc ones are just still too like, ta-daaaa http://i.imgur.com/zbXIAqE.gif

would will graham wear this, that's the motto

r|t|c, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 12:44 (twelve years ago)

i have a plain white dress shirt from uniqlo that fits me really well, why because darts

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 12:46 (twelve years ago)

don't see it really, aren't all coloured socks a little bit ta-daaa? mine are only really visible if i put my feet up or whatever, i personally just find it depressing when i have to wear a black or grey sock so i've phased them all out.

as i say tho, ymmv.

Wantaway striker (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 12:49 (twelve years ago)

i know the uniqlo vibe is all sharp basics and whatever but they need to chill out with the polyester imo, it's kind of cheap and nasty

i used to wear their black jeans but stopped after two pairs went shiny

do they do cords at all btw, thought for sure they did but i couldnt see any last time

r|t|c, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 12:54 (twelve years ago)

i figured they would have cords coming out for the fall, instead they just made jeans leggings for men.

i got a couple pairs of cords from lands end canvas, they seem nice but i've only given them a quick try-on.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 12:56 (twelve years ago)

they do cords again now yeah, they recently launched loads more casual trousers (finally in their "skinny" fit which is basically slim fit) but for some dumb fucking reason the shortest leg on them is 34. the trousers are really nasty fits imo. some of the shirts too.

the oxford ones are incredible quality tho, even with a recent version getting a bit shinier. wish they did more colours.

Wantaway striker (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:02 (twelve years ago)

sometimes I got tempted by their strange looking shirts, but the thought of running into other guys all over the city wearing the same strange looking shirt keeps me to the basics at uniqlo. I figure if i get a strange looking shirt I want it to be one that NO ONE ELSE HAS.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:05 (twelve years ago)

you're supposed to get them hemmed in store xp

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:05 (twelve years ago)

i knew they offered that service but is it in store? like while you wait? not sure if it is in london, or in all the stores.

Wantaway striker (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:06 (twelve years ago)

pick them up the next day, usually

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:06 (twelve years ago)

current normal pants are pretty decent, though I could see them getting worn out in an unflattering way down the road

lol xpost

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:09 (twelve years ago)

do they charge for hemming? kinda sucks since i buy from them online and would have to get them hemmed by my tailor. i've just been cuffing the one pair i have tbh.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:09 (twelve years ago)

if it's above a certain price they don't. they might offer an express service idk.

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:10 (twelve years ago)

uniqlo is all about white cotton shirts (or off-white or basic patterns), socks, and the occasional pair of pants imo

chinavision!, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:11 (twelve years ago)

i thought all euros did that - shipped only one size of jeans, and the customer would hem. make loads of sense - nothing worse than finding all the 30x30 and 30x31's sold out while there are plenty of 30x29 and 30x32 on the shelf. but it would be INCONVENIENT for amurricans.

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)

they used to have diff trouser lengths here, i'm sure of it. it's a new thing for them to only have 34 off the peg.

obv totally otm about their more designed stuff, all their print shirts were really nasty anyway imo.

Wantaway striker (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)

aw ur so petite xp

r|t|c, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:14 (twelve years ago)

xpost like to me it is p inconvenient for a 20 quid pair of trousers. if they make 32 leg i'll prob just roll it a little, but 34 is just messy.

asos tends to do more comprehensive range of lengths off the peg, recently realised this and it makes me buy a lot more, 31-inch leg fits so well.

Wantaway striker (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:15 (twelve years ago)

uniqlo is the only place i know that does the hemming. never had it done in the UK, and it's stupid, but it does works fine. i don't think they have a rush service, but they charge more for a different kind of hem (the hem you need on jeans maybe?) i like their "vintage" chino.

also like their oxfords, socks, plain linen shirts, and cotton/linen madrases. quite often i will have to wear clothes i don't particularly like because i don't want to go there dressed in all uniqlo.

never bought any of their knitwear (except a scarf once). any thoughts on that?

caek, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:20 (twelve years ago)

when i say "charge more for jean hem" i mean "more than zero". they don't charge at all for the standard one.

caek, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:20 (twelve years ago)

it's the dress slack hem that requires more skill

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:22 (twelve years ago)

knitwear feels a little cheap I think. gets pilly fast.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:33 (twelve years ago)

hemming jeans??

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)

granted right now it's cuffing season

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

i fuck w uniqlo socks underwear oxfords and sweaters

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

hemming jeans??

well if they're too long, yeah!
