is it possible to wear a pocket square without looking like a menswear blogger/someone who does magic at house parties?

i like a pocket square now and again.

I haven't had money for new clothes for ages. When I wanted to be smart-casual I always used to wear smart jeans and a blazer but recently I've heard that described as 'doing a Clarkson' (trust Jeremy to ruin another fashion staple). So is this a no-no now? What else can I do?

think jeans and blazer is fine, only clarkson if they actually look like clarkson's jeans/blazer.

wearing a pocket square is pretty easy, you just fold it however & stuff it into your breast pocket and then you don't fuss with it. seriously, just leave it alone. try to forget it's there.

i think its generally best to avoid fussy poufs or elaborate pocket origami because they don't really stay in place IRL but its up to you, as long as it stays put and doesn't distract you then you're fine

i've been trying to figure out if its cool to go w/pocket square and no tie for biz cazh. white linen seems fine but anything else seems a little forced.

well imho it depends on the rest of the look and your level of confidence in coordinating with the other fabrics you're wearing.

for ex: a rich paisley pocket sq in a varicolored tweed, on the one hand; a white linen pocket sq in a trad blue blazer on the other.

in both cases the pocket square adds something to the look, but you wouldn't want to interchange them

most cases white linen is p safe tho, personally i think it helps to showcase the color of the suit by providing a pure white that calibrates the eye, just a pet theory of mine

the rule that a sock must match the color of the suit pant always seemed really weird to me

not really a hard and fast rule at all but i have read a theory to the effect of it increases the length of the leg line when you are walking

colorful socks can be delightful & fun but you still have to give at least one fuck about whether they go

they seem ok. I've been wearing them a bunch and putting them through the wash and aside from maybe some slight fading they're hanging in there.

you guys are bumming me out. I need to see some examples of badly applied colorful patterned socks. I'm worried now.

- bright red socks
- bright turquoise socks (these are the hardest to make work)

and a bunch of socks that might as well be black.

Thank you! I am enjoying reading it as I know nothing about men's clothing but am sometimes called upon my men in my life to render opinions on their clothing choices so I am finding this very helpful. I don't have anything to add beyond "I like pocket squares."

Thanks for the sock info, chinavision. At that price, I think it would be worth getting a few pairs (for me and my man-sized feet - thank you wild sock trend!).
