wow

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 03:27 (twelve years ago)

was at a wedding the other weekend and it felt like two out of three guys i saw were wearing j crew ludlow suits. they looked good tho, fabric was decent, cuts were conservative but not unhip

max, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:16 (twelve years ago)

if i had to get a suit id probably get one of those, $600 is a great price, the only hesitation being how many yung urban creative professionals apparently have one as their only suit

max, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:17 (twelve years ago)

couldnt u guys just fancy a straight suit up with like yknow ties/shirts/socks/squares etc instead of frowning on stuff that doesnt come with some gimmicky twist

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:27 (twelve years ago)

that statement goes for most things itt tbrr

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:28 (twelve years ago)

whos demanding gimmicks!

max, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:28 (twelve years ago)

idk man yall are kinda drawling 'conservative' here like its a suboptimal thing

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:30 (twelve years ago)

ur projecting

max, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:35 (twelve years ago)

I got a j crew suit. fabric is nice, style is nice. if anything I would have preferred a slightly more conservative cut but it's not too too hip.
I think the guy who helped me was unhelpful though. I suspected it wasn't the right fit but was talked into getting it and, turns out, it wasn't the right fit.
for this reason I'd like to try someplace else when I next get a suit, as mentioned above.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:10 (twelve years ago)

think I'm swearing off buying a new suit for awhile though.

conservative does not mean classic.

i think in max's post conservative was meant to be a good thing! like, you could wear the suit to a more formal wedding or funeral or job interview (non-"creative" category).

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:33 (twelve years ago)

i only even brought it up b/c hurting asked

max, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:36 (twelve years ago)

yeah wait what, the whole point is that I want a conservative suit for work (that doesn't cost $1000+ and also doesn't look like a potato sack).

The last one I bought was a Brooks Brothers Fitzgerald in their winter sale a couple years ago, and I was kind of disappointed -- the fabric doesn't hold that well, jacket is too long and btw their in house tailoring SUCKS

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:44 (twelve years ago)

Another option seems to be those Black Brown suits they sell at Lord & Taylor -- anyone have experience with those?

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)

did you get a S jacket?

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)

other options for suits are banana republic, (i know i'm gonna get excoriated for this) top of the line jos. a banks suits, hart schaffner marx @ nordstrom

obv when they're on sale, of course

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:47 (twelve years ago)

no, I clearly should have though. The dude who sized me said I didn't need it.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)

i don't own a decent suit

i should be ashamed right

living a lie

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)

haha i think we're roughly the same size - department store people have always recommended me to get the S

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:49 (twelve years ago)

don't let a poorly dressed j crew salesman sell you a jacket that's too small. from the website you can tell they dig jackets that are too small.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:49 (twelve years ago)

Hart Schaffner Marx does make decent suits -- I actually owned one but I was much fatter at the time so I wound up donating it when I lost weight. IDK about Banana, and aren't the top Jos. A. Banks suits actually kind of expensive?

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)

http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/hart-schaffner-marx

these seem pretty 'classic'

finding a good tailor is key. my friend seems to have pretty good luck with UES tailors

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)

what about upthread when people were recommending cheaper bespoke or made to measure options?

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:51 (twelve years ago)

top Jos A. Bank suits are "expensive" but it literally is impossible to pay sticker price at Jos A. Banks. i think they run sales, even on the top of the line stuff, that brings them down to reasonable levels every couple of months

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:51 (twelve years ago)

this one still looks kind of interesting maybe: http://mrnednyc.com/

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 13:51 (twelve years ago)

if you want to get your ivy league on, you can go to j. press (lol)

i liked black brown shirts quite a bit before i got more particular about fit. not sure the quality will be up to what j. crew is offering but you can get some really good sales prices at l&t

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:05 (twelve years ago)

i have a steven Alan suit i like, they can be k pricey but they also have a lot of sales, much of their stuff hits the sweet spot of not being overtly hip while still having a lot of taste

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:07 (twelve years ago)

wish i had more occasion to wear my sick ass suits

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:08 (twelve years ago)

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

i do sport the jackets more frequently

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

I get an additional 20% discount at jos a banks through my company. Lolawyers and their suits.

I still don't own a suit that fits me. I have one but it's way to big. I have a hard time buying one because I never wear one unless there is a funeral or I have a job interview.

Jeff, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:32 (twelve years ago)

what abt weddings

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:33 (twelve years ago)

i've wondered if i would ever wear a suit day-to-day outside of a professional context

i don't think i would but it would be nice to have the option

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)

I don't do suits at weddings. Nice shirt/pants only.

Jeff, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

i'd be glad to wear a suit for the roughly one day/week i'm in the office, but culturally it just would not really be ok.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)

im going to weddings the next couple weekends and im going to wear SUITS

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)

i've never been to an american wedding

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)

from what i can tell from movies, people wear vince vaughn body suits

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

one of the weddings im going to is canadian, they just rub you all down w cheesey gravy i assume

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)

I don't see how guys do suits every day in the summer. Just wearing a long sleeve shirt/undershirt/pants and I'm soaked in sweat after my walk to the train station in the morning. I would be a mess in a suit.

a photo of me in my summer suit w my backpack

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 15:00 (twelve years ago)

i find suit pants / slacks are much cooler in the summer than even lightweight cotton jeans

then you throw on a seersucker jacket

乒乓, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 15:00 (twelve years ago)

I've been loving RRL's jeans and shirts. I keep thinking they will disappoint me next season, but they've stayed consistent have have improved. This year they have a japanese denim chino!

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

I meant that they keep improving the quality of the jeans. Through the years, I've fallen in love with different brands of jeans and by a few seasons they change the quality and it goes downhill. Paper denim, Earnest Sewn, so many ones whose names I've forgotten, they all started out making great jeans, but it never lasted. I hope RRL keeps it going. Really perfect jeans if you wear boots and want raw denim.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)

sometimes i will wear a suit to dinner or something when it isnt strictly necessary but then i end up feeling vaguely ashamed of myself for still playing dress-up in my mid 20s

the spectacular cow (Lamp), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

fuck suits let's all wear insane customized denim
