cv, a lot of the hk tailors will do 'tours' in the US where you go to a hotel, they take yer measurements, and mail you a suit 4 months later

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:58 (ten years ago) link

you used to find out about those guys in the UK from their adverts in the financial times

this guy was on anthony bourdain's show - looks like he's coming to nyc soon http://simpsonsintailor.com.hk/travel_itinerary

i dont think there is like an official difference between blazer, sportcoat and suit jacket

lol thread of missing gabbneb

w/o doing any google detective work the two main differences btw a suit jacket and a blazer are the cut of the jacket and the weight of the cloth? and then sportscoats are just like tacky blazers iirc/not worn for yachting

the spectacular cow (Lamp), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:04 (ten years ago) link

ok tossing HK tailor in the list of possibilities too

chinavision!, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link

disagree with that.

the "sport" in sportscoat is shooting, so they're more often brown or melange, more often heavyweight, and i think necessarily single breasted

"A blazer is similar to a sports coat, and is tailored from solid color or striped fabrics. Blazers are often made with metal buttons reflecting their origins in the sport of boating, though this is not necessarily a defining feature. Blazers also often have patch pockets, unlike other kinds of coats.[2][3]"

a lot of plaid more colourful plaid type pieces seem to be called sportscoats too.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

yeah, plaid too. in the uk generally patterns/brown/melange/check = country, and country = sports

no brown in town

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:11 (ten years ago) link

once heard an oxford professor pronounce that brown suits are for shooting or working in indian restaurants

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

dang

lag∞n, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:14 (ten years ago) link

yeah there are "typical" differences but not An Official Way To Tell Which Is Which

max, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:30 (ten years ago) link

blazer is heavier, usually more uniform-y, i.e. metal buttons; sportcoat is the least formal, wackier fabrics/patterns allowed; suit jacket is the jacket from an actual suit and has a corresponding pair of pants

max, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:30 (ten years ago) link

but w/e, nothing means anything

max, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link

just be really handsome and wear only the t-shirts you get for free from yr work + levis 501s - mensstyle 2013

the spectacular cow (Lamp), Monday, 19 August 2013 21:34 (ten years ago) link

rn im in the mood to just buy a lot of black jeans and black tees and only wear them every day forever

max, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:35 (ten years ago) link

i was gonna do that this summer but i only stuck w/ the black jeans

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

instead i bought a pair of comedy glasses and some button ups from japan. terrible

this is the most useful way to think about it! who cares what's "official." basically, the ideal sportcoat should not lead anyone to think it has a matching pair of pants lying around somewhere. so grey/navy solid worsted is a bad call as a sportcoat because it ends up looking like you lost your suit pants.

i'm glad we were able to help ronan find a jacket

caek, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:53 (ten years ago) link

i liked the one he posted, seemed like a less fitted / darted cut which i dig

乒乓, Monday, 19 August 2013 21:55 (ten years ago) link

i tried the jacket again i will maybe keep it it needs some tailoring im not sure ill prob just keep it in my closet for a while then maybe sell it on ebay, the black lapel shirt fits good and it a pretty standard white dress shirt with maybe some slight details that are not the coolest in the world but w/e i will wear it to two weddings soon

LG: one not-so-hip but good value/quality option would be Austin Reed - they have a couple of navy jackets at heavy discounts, e.g.

i've been reading a 600-page thread on conservative business suit/shirt/tie/pocket square combos on styleforum, its a good time

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 00:24 (ten years ago) link

lol that ASW dude and super trad styleforum dudes are all such disgusting swine, kill them all imho

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 00:28 (ten years ago) link

sometimes I think it's more rewarding for me to read about this stuff all the time and **imagine** that I'm super well dressed, than to actually attempt it and live in disappointment

chinavision!, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 00:30 (ten years ago) link

the sad part is SOME trad menswear blogs are well researched and actually have a great wealth of knowledge about textile and craft, but that knowledge is used almost exclusively for the purposes of the most odious and gratuitous class distinction, like these are people who use the word proles without the slightest hint of irony

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 00:33 (ten years ago) link

yeah i guess i feel more "let 'em have their lil hobby" than you but there is something uncomfortable abt it

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 00:37 (ten years ago) link

haha well fair enough these are kind of my pet subjects tbh

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 00:39 (ten years ago) link

http://www.other-shop.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/o/u/ourlegacyblazer.jpg

it was £350 but i am fairly sure i'll be wearing it for years. the shop are gonna shorten the sleeves a tiny bit but it was a nice fit other than that.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 19:55 (ten years ago) link

it's v similar to the one i posted but irl that was v wooly and i already have a quite heavy kenzo double breasted wool blazer i got on ebay, plus this wedding on sat could be hot.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 19:56 (ten years ago) link

while i was at the shop i also saw this which i thought was kinda cool, might consider it deeper into winter. bit more romulan emperor than my normal garb.
