Today at the hairdresser's it was demonstrated that I don't have enough hair yet for whatserface's hairstyle as shown above, but I'll persevere. I can kind of flick out the back now - will try that tomorrow, although someone might come and dump me in a TARDIS and send me back to the 90s.

FFM, I'm looking forward to this pic - I have a mental picture of a lovely sultry dark orange.

have you tried using texturizer yet, ljub? i have no idea how it works but it is amazing.

just1n3, Sunday, 28 July 2013 01:25 (twelve years ago)

I had no idea! It looks as though it's for curly hair, mostly? Mine's straight-ish, but has these wavy frizzy bits at the front as it gets longer, and those are the primary reason to straighten. Also just to add gloss overall, because without layers my hair looks a bit ratty otherwise. Your hair's straight-ish though too, right? Do you use it?

ljubljana, Sunday, 28 July 2013 01:57 (twelve years ago)

When I was about 20 I was told by a boy that he found me attractive but would respect the fact that I wasn't that interested in relationships, which he could tell because of the way I (didn't) manage my hair. He was completely serious.

ljubljana, Sunday, 28 July 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

ugh that guy sounds like a try-hard loser

nah it's for all types of hair - it basically just gives your hair... texture! so i guess for short hair like yours it be great for giving a bit of volume (you add it at the roots) and aiding in the shape, so the layers and stuff don't all sit flat. good for that sort "sexy" bedhead look. my hair is pretty straight, but i tend to wear it with a bit of wave, the texturizer just stops it from looking limp. also great for updos - 40 pins for a simple bun type thing without vs. 3 pins for the same thing using texturizer.

i use this stuff. a little goes a long way, and i sometimes use a large powder brush to dust it on my roots.

it does feel disgusting tho - really weird, like the powder hitting your scalp feels wet, and then when you touch your hair it feels chalky. but worth it.

just1n3, Sunday, 28 July 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)

nb that stuff i mention above is the only texturizer i've tried, so not sure if there are better or worse ones out there.

just1n3, Sunday, 28 July 2013 02:14 (twelve years ago)

Will look out for it - thanks. I got the Sumo stuff from Bumble and Bumble but it only seems to work if I really trowel it on, and then I'm overpowered by the smell.

ljubljana, Sunday, 28 July 2013 14:16 (twelve years ago)

This stuff ("got2be powder play") has really dumb teenagery marketing but imo works the same as the BSH stuff at half the price, get it at the drug store or Target or wherever. Between that and some cheapo dry shampoo, I always have nice volume and no sweaty helmet hair (I have either a scooter or bicycle as transpo...in the Arizona summers).

Sorry the BSH stuff is called Powder Play, iirc, both have silly names.

ta! will look for it.

10 seconds 2 volume, and then about 3000 more seconds 2 leaving the house while faffing with hair that looks any different from usual. What I need to do is remember to experiment with my hair just before I wash it, so that I'm not such a coward about trying out new stuff.

ljubljana, Sunday, 28 July 2013 22:15 (twelve years ago)

that stuff is pretty powerful ime

my hair is just awful. one of the worst things in my life, which means i have a really good life so that's ok

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:09 (twelve years ago)

yeah mine is a shitty mess too
not sure what to do about it tbh but i'm sure i'll figure something out (wear it up every day until i figure something out)

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:14 (twelve years ago)

one thing I will say for my cheapass seasalt spray is that it's ideal for making my hair look sort-of-styled on days when I can't be assed washing/styling it

I want to chop mine soooooooo badly, but feel like I have kind of committed to growing it out until I'm back in the States to get a real job and shit, and to have my beloved Gregg with-two-"g"s to do the deed.

Will donate to Pantene/American Cancer Society's Great Lengths program (thanks to ca and jaq for the Locks of Love warnings, which are well-founded). In the meantime, UGH. I just pull it back with an elastic 24/7.

quincie, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 00:42 (twelve years ago)

Apparently you can get cheap shampoo/blowouts in Taiwan; I'm holding out for that little luxury. A shampoo/blowout in hothumidhothumid Baja would last approximately 2.3 seconds.

quincie, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 00:44 (twelve years ago)

Here's a picture of my home dye job. It's growing on me, but I miss my cartoonier oranges and reds. My hair is the longest it's ever been! Unfortunately it's so fine that you're seeing all of it - wish I had more hair.

It's a little darker irl, this time of night my house is too dim everywhere except where it's too bright

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 03:17 (twelve years ago)

So so so long! It looks really lovely! My hair is thickish, which makes it an extra pain in the ass while long--it takes forever to dry and is HEAVY so it is hard to wear in a ponytail without it being uncomfortable. My layers have grown out all weirdly so that shorter pieces stick out of braids. Really wish I had IO to did my hair and nails every day :(

quincie, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 05:19 (twelve years ago)

idk ffm, i think the color's still really beautiful on you, even if it's more understated

Agreed. You look fab.

also ffm your hair looks great!

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:47 (twelve years ago)

I def feel better about my hair after reading that article! I don't think I could handle a weave, I get migraines from any high/tight ponytail, I would probably die during the process. Eep. Thanks for the kind words, ladies! I'd like to thank my former employer for laying me off and giving me the chance to just grow my hair like weeds. Haven't had a trim since March!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

On that note I am in a wedding sept 14 and have a hair appointment aug 22. Do I go and have it cut and coloured a few shades up to my preferred bright colour, or do I keep / touch up this colour and get a cheap trim somewhere? My hairstylist will prob charge me a good $150+ to process my hair after so long away & boxed dye.. But I don't really have the $150. Not to spare. I love my lady but unemployment and fancy hair jobs do not go hand in hand, especially since I have to buy a bridesmaid dress, bachelorette, etc.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:22 (twelve years ago)

I guess I made up my mind there!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:23 (twelve years ago)

The color looks beautiful - just get a cheap trim

just1n3, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)

^^^ Your lady will wait for you! It looks great - get the bright colours into the dress!

ljubljana, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 22:44 (twelve years ago)

the dress is slate grey! Hah. I picked up the dress today though and it looks alright with the hair. Thanks for all the feedback and pep talkery!

lol what now that I look on the computer vs phone I see the image is sideways? Why so crazy, tinypic?

does anyone here have any experience with extensions?

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 16 August 2013 19:23 (twelve years ago)

esp. clip-in human hair extensions

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 16 August 2013 19:23 (twelve years ago)

no but i am interested in finding out more
last time i was at the stylist there was another stylist who was going to do some clip in jobbies and they looked rill tempting

no fomo (La Lechera), Friday, 16 August 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)

my main concerns are:

  • can i reasonably expect to put them in/take them out by myself?
  • will they rip my hair out?
  • is there a huge difference in cheaper/more expensive ones? they're all made of the same thing, right? anything on labels i should be looking out for?

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 16 August 2013 19:39 (twelve years ago)

My beloved stylist refuses (well, she would probably do it if I insisted but I tend to take her advice in all hair-related things) to cut my hair short until after I have this baby because she says that my face might change shape or who knows what else and I might prefer to have long hair to hide behind, which fine. FINE. But I cannot wait to cut all my hair off and stop coloring it (I'm one of those reckless women who continue to color her hair while pregnant!!! I did switch to semi-permanent, though, per Beloved Stylist's suggestion)! I want to see how gray it is, and I'm tired of my eye brows being so much lighter than my hair. And while I do indulge in the occasional brow tint, I don't have the money or interest in keeping it up regularly and now I have all these eyebrow hairs that are like half light blond and half brown.

There's no point to any of that, really.

Roxy what did you decide to do about hair extensions?

carl agatha, Thursday, 29 August 2013 17:24 (twelve years ago)

I don't know any white women irl who regularly use hair extensions, but I know some WoC who do it so well that you can't tell it's not their hair, like just for volume under other areas etc, and easily applicable/removable at home. This would depend on your hair color, texture, and thickness in the specific area you're trying to enhance but it seems plausible to me.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 29 August 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)

Also I know someone who wears false eyelashes all the time, applied with hair glue so they STAY, and I am SO INTRIGUED. Want big sweeping falsies to bat.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 29 August 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

Man, I would do extensions just to see what I look like with long hair since i haven't had it since HS and also so that I'd have the freedom to put it up.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 29 August 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

I just realised that guy isn't Russell Brand!

kinder, Thursday, 29 August 2013 17:33 (twelve years ago)

I got a coupon for some huge amount off lash extensions and I am so tempted, but I have to use it before the end of August and the lashes really don't last that long and I've been working from home 4/5 days every week and seeing no other humans besides Jeff and the old folks in my water aerobics class so I mean, what is the point really. (I am not a "I do these expensive/time consuming beauty rituals for myself!" kind of person (if it weren't for societal expectations I'd be the hairiest most unkempt person alive) so that is not a draw here.)

xp ha! I don't think I realized that until I read your post.

carl agatha, Thursday, 29 August 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)

i got some clip in hair extensions and they are amazing and changing my life. my best friend for years didn't realize they weren't my real hair tbh! i told her after a couple days and she was all WTF! they are human hair and exactly my shade (which was amazingly lucky cause i ordered through the net w/ guesswork), and super long. withstand headbanging.

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 29 August 2013 19:22 (twelve years ago)

So you just clip them in and take them out yourself when you are in the mood for more hair? That seems pretty cool.

carl agatha, Thursday, 29 August 2013 19:24 (twelve years ago)

I am legit down with this:
