sunny maybe it was the maybelline stuff then! it intrigued me and I was like YEAH and then NOOOO

kinder, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

I think a lot of primers are silicon (silicone? I never get this right) based, so they're essentially blocking your pores - so not great if you're prone to breakouts. I wouldn't use it regularly for that reason alone.

Monistat vs. Smashbox

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

I tried the Smashbox color correcting primer -- i don't see any difference? there's nothing really corrective about it for me. It just looks like I have regular primer on my face, idk. I'm going to return it.

wait wait woah. the green one?

educate yourself to this reality (sunny successor), Monday, 24 June 2013 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

yep! i dunno if my redness is too, i dunno, ingrained? but there's not any noticeable difference. today I made sure to wait half an hour after washing my face to moisturize, and then waited another 30 min or so before applying the primer, so make sure my face was as calm as it could be...no discernible difference

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 June 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

also has anyone returned product they're dissatisifed with to Sephora?

I never knew you could, so this would be my first time. Just wanting to make sure they won't give me side-eye

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 June 2013 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

Nope! Go ahead, they're used to it.

:D

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 June 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

Yep, several times. They're really great at customer service and won't think anything of it at all. Once I returned something there and later realized I'd bought it somewhere else! Whoops.

I love Sephora, don't have it in the UK any more afaik, saw at least two branches on holiday the other week and had to be held back
I still need to claim my free prize/points/birthday thing :((

kinder, Monday, 24 June 2013 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

When I was living in London they opened one right near where we were in Islington but I don't think it lasted long at all. I remember the first time I ever went into a Sephora. It was in 1998 in Paris and I'd only read about them in magazines because I don't think there were any yet in the US. My grandmother and I were walking along the Champs-Élysées when I saw one and pretty much dragged her in there just so I could see it and buy one electric blue eye pencil that I probably never even used but omg it was from SEPHORA. lol.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Monday, 24 June 2013 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

I've returned stuff to Sephora and Ulta and it is nbd.

carl agatha, Monday, 24 June 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

We got our first Ulta a few months ago but I haven't visited yet. I don't know whats wrong with me.

Awww I feel bad that I recommended it now, Veg :(

Speaking of recommendations, can anyone recommend a really pore minimizer?

lol s'okay! <3

Carl, do you use Dr Feelgood over or under foundation? I've been using it over, but I feel like it takes it off. Maybe I need to apply more carefully and pat rather than rub.

ljubljana, Saturday, 29 June 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

Lately I've been using it alone. I've also used it over primer, which is sort of a weird primer and primer combo, but it seems to work. If I wear foundation, I will pat it on over it to sort of set it. The over/under question seems to also plague Make Up Alley posters. I really think it's a matter of personal preference, so I would try it both ways and see if either works.

There are also really mixed reviews on it - it seems to be a love/hate kind of product so you may also come down on the hate side. I sort of hated it at first (the smell!) but now I'm on my third tin so I am clearly a lover.

carl agatha, Saturday, 29 June 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)

i always used it under, as a primer or alone without foundation

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Saturday, 29 June 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)

I like the smell! Will try it under.

ljubljana, Sunday, 30 June 2013 00:39 (twelve years ago)

returned the Smashbox color correcting primer to Sephora, they were v nice about it. And I asked them about other 'redness' corrective type products that might be more effective, and I got a sample of Peter Thomas Roth CC Cream - spf 30, and doubles as a moisturizer, apparently.

contains 'camu camu'. salesdude made a point of telling me this fact with raised eyebrows so I just nodded along and pretended to be impressed. could be extruded monkey shit for all I know

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 7 July 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

so we'll see how it goes! I'm wearing it now. feels kinda nice, the correctiveness seems to work but when I asked mr veg he just stared quietly at my face for a while and said 'I dunno'

:/

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 8 July 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

ok it's only been two days which isn't really enough time to gauge but: no breakouts! my face looks kinda nice with this CC cream/nanoo nanoo stuff.

it goes on so light, I'm kind of blown away by how good the coverage is. I feel like a normal girl almost. I get a bit shiny with daywear, but nothing a little bit of powder won't fix.

only downside is this shit costs $48! but they've kinda got me over a barrell..it's the first stuff I've found that works, and I don't need to use very much it seems... so I'll probably pony up and get it anyway, assuming I don't have any horrific breakouts or reactions in the next week.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 8 July 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

VG does the CC cream have chemical sunscreen? I am curious! PTR sunscreen always worked like a dream for me but the chemical sunscreen is a concern

homosexual II, Monday, 8 July 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)

it has physical sunscreen (mineral?), not chemical. which I think might be another reason I'm not breaking out...

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 9 July 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

oh and when I said last night to Mr Veg that I think the cc cream is working, he said 'Yeah! Your face doesn't look all blotchy and weird now'

<3

L. OL. OL. OL.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 9 July 2013 17:54 (twelve years ago)

not to harp on about this but i'm now 4 days in, no breakouts, no itching, no nothing and every time I look in the mirror I just grin because my face looks so nice again!

the powder I had isn't working well though, seems to make me more oily -- will maybe try some bare minerals sheer powder over top, and maybe look into one of their foundations powders for more fancy-face coverage.

huge confidence booster though, lemme tell ya. and I'm not constantly scratching my face!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

whoa, I am impressed and gleeful that it has no chemical sunscreens in it! i am going to go buy this after work. PTR sunscreen always made my skin look awesome but I ditched it because of the octisalate.

homosexual II, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)

I would recommend getting a sample first --- it only comes in 3 shades and the lightest, light/medium does have a slightly orangey cast to it. It hasn't been a problem with my skin tone but I've seen a lot of reviews to that effect, so def test it before dropping any $$

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 July 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah that might be an issue. I am the most pale person alive.

homosexual II, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)

I thought I was too! But I guess my undertones are yellower than I thought. WTF. Who knows.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 July 2013 20:41 (twelve years ago)

Now have a Lorac wet/dry powder foundation to wear over this CC cream for a bit of extra coverage at nighttimes/special occasions...and this weird 'HD' powder by Makeup For Ever, which is just powdered silica from what I can figure out, which I am using over the CC cream during the day just to soak up oilness without any extra color.

It soaks up the oiliness really well, it's weird to apply though. Feels like cornflour sort of? and when you tap it off the brush it flies everywhere because it's so light. Application-wise, using a tiny bit and buffing it on with a kabuki brush seems to work - using a regular powder brush I think you would end up looking like you floured your face...but I think my buffing technique needs practice, need to use a lighter touch so I don't buff off the cc cream underneath.

exciting times re my face zzz I'm sure you're all tired of my updates now haha

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 July 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)

im srsly loving it. haha

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

like, its showing me that makeup can work and make people happy

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

i feel so neg about makeup lately, its nice to see it

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

idk, i still feel a little bit conflicted by the whole snakeoil angle of all this stuff, and why am I spending $$ to look 'normal' ... but if the only person I'm doing it for is me, then maybe it's not as big of a conflict of interest? idk.

it's just nice to find something that fucking works for a goddamn change

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 July 2013 20:36 (twelve years ago)

i mean its not snakeoil if it works and makes you feel good. obv you dont *need* it tho

Keep it up, VG! I love reading this stuff. And I think that some day I will again be interested in makeup and hairs. A day when it is less than 100 degrees.

quincie, Monday, 15 July 2013 23:28 (twelve years ago)

^^^interested in doing my own makeup and hairs, is what I meant there. For now I live vicariously through people in more favorable climes.

quincie, Monday, 15 July 2013 23:29 (twelve years ago)

My interest in makeup wanes significantly in the summer anyway, and now that I work from home more often than not, I find myself really resenting mascara on the days I go into the office. Why bother??!?! I'm just going to have to wash it off again!

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Monday, 15 July 2013 23:32 (twelve years ago)

yeah summer is the worst for makeup

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 July 2013 23:50 (twelve years ago)

cheers to that
