lol you knew it was talenti -- salted caramel, totes going back for more because it's like a container that i have to eat a bunch of gelato to use. poor me!
candles seem kinda hard to make but then again, i've made lip balms so it can't be that different, right?
i think artisanal people want to make candlemaking seem all impossible because they want to charge us $15+ for a scented candle. and honestly, no way. it can't be that hard, right?

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 13 June 2013 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

candles are pretty easy, it's true.

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 June 2013 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

$15 is sort of a deal for scented candle, they can get SO spendy

talenti switched up their line and cut my favorite flavor

:-(

Talenti is everywhere now and looks delectable and taunts me with its dairy-having.

I have nothing to say about home decor today. I can't think about that stuff in the summer.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 13 June 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

although free-standing pillars are trickier to make than container candles in a glass or a tin

price has a lot to do with the packaging & quality / source of the fragrance oils, whether they are natural or synthetic etc

i made candles for a year after college

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 June 2013 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

that's awesome!

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 13 June 2013 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

it was cool and i really enjoyed the work. i would reaally like to get to a place where i can work as an ~artisan~ again

BUT then my dad and my boss got romantically involved and she got pregnant and whoops, there went the candle biz lol

i got some cool siblings out of it, tho, so its alright

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 June 2013 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

that is a much richer backstory to "i made candles" than i expected! wow. none of my jobs have ever yielded siblings, at least not that i'm aware of.

one month passes...

couple of consignment store finds! exciting.

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:18 (twelve years ago)

as the new bedroom has no closet, we got a super rad coat rack (2 tapered wood pillars, braced and set on flared black rectangular bases, metal grill rack on top). we've just been using rolling racks, so this is a pretty snappy step up.

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:22 (twelve years ago)

also matches a floor lamp nicely. i'll post pics, maybe, if i remember!

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:24 (twelve years ago)

here it is, newly established & holding some of my boyfriend's clothes

we went to a yard sale at a vintage shop an acquaintance runs, ended up picking up ~50 vintage wood (some wire) clothes hangers of various origin -- some are marked with the names of tailors, hotels, furriers, etc. i will not be satisfied until the last plastic hanger is banished from sight forever.

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Saturday, 27 July 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)

Read that as 'furries'

i will not be satisfied until the last plastic hanger is banished from sight forever.

this is my mission also

plastic hangers are fine if you have a closet where you can banish them, i don't tho

I've been criticizing the unthinking nature of "let's put some reclaimed wood on the wall" for a while but this takes the cake in a way that makes my blood boil:

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 August 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)

I mean if that were an ilxor's house I'd be like, A for effort and the paint color, it's full of cliches but it's not a bad tableau, I like all the colors and the succulent. But from a designer?? Erk.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 19 August 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)

But then I write this from my silvery-grey room that I have decorated with vintage handbags, found objects, 1930s pottery, and a Budweiser glass full of paint brushes.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 19 August 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

So my approval is highly suspect (I DIED may never come over).

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 19 August 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

I don't think I can ever post my diy decor photos here bc I love succulents and reclaimed wood :/

just1n3, Monday, 19 August 2013 17:30 (twelve years ago)

I think it's the fact it's a backdrop for a widescreen TV

kinder, Monday, 19 August 2013 17:38 (twelve years ago)

the cable makes it

koogs, Monday, 19 August 2013 19:39 (twelve years ago)

yes it's "hmm what should be the centerpiece of this carefully arranged vignette of distressed wood, old suitcases, and a faceted terrarium? I know - it will look PERFECT with a flat screen TV with a cord playfully draped down the side instead of hidden behind the plant"

and then taking pictures of it and proudly submitting them to a design blog...

Sadly, 99.99 percent of sheeple will never wake up (I DIED), Monday, 19 August 2013 22:26 (twelve years ago)

idk that major authentic mise en scene seems like it would really bring out the real in reality tv!

really stupid looking imo

the late great, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 03:04 (twelve years ago)

the faceted thingy and the succulent are cool, and it's a pretty table. but the tv / wood combo is hideous and the old suitcases are dumb.

the late great, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 03:18 (twelve years ago)

oh my

what blog is it on?

i like the plant though, i'll take the plant

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 03:24 (twelve years ago)

it was on designsponge (it is not surprising that the house also features several small sets of antlers, a white eames side chair w/ dowel legs, and oversized block letters on shelves and walls)

Sadly, 99.99 percent of sheeple will never wake up (I DIED), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 03:38 (twelve years ago)

oversized block letters on shelves and walls

the worst

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)

i didn't know those things were a ~trend~ until i went to that vintage garage thing with carl agatha and je55e -- i was like why are there all of these giant letters? what are people going to do with a bunch of giant letters? then i learned.

also i have antlers in my home but they were given to us by a relative and i didn't really know that was a thing either but now i feel embarrassed about my antlers, both inside and out

no fomo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:10 (twelve years ago)

Letters are fine with me if you actually found them in a junkyard/empty lot/fire-gutted Chinese restaurant. Otherwise, nah-uh.

xp ditto for antlers.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:13 (twelve years ago)

there was a couple at this thing who were a real portrait of contrived style, speaking of -- i think that's what we're speaking of?
the woman was wearing a little porkpie hat and sleazy jeans and a one-shoulder tshirt and her hair was very professionally dyed but also "messy"
the man had shoulder length hair, a siouxsie tshirt, and looked botoxed
i wonder if they bought some antlers or some letters

no fomo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

she also bought a neil young record (everybody knows this is nowhere) and was carrying it around like a prize
they were amusing

no fomo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

i don't know how preciously staged some of the design blog homes are IRL but man i don't think i could live in that place, it feels practically soulless with its tastefully muted palette and its clever embroidery hoops

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:25 (twelve years ago)

what is it like to live in a blog

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

has been posted before, but tbh someone could post it every 3 months and it'd be otm every time

koogs, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)

i looked up the design sponge post for that house and there was a photo captioned like "i really think plants are important, they really give life to a space" and it's was just the tiniest little spider plant in a little macramé hanger in the corner of a room

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

yesterday my bf & i were driving back from western ma. and stopped at a thrift store in worcester where i found a book called LIFESPACE by spiros zakas and boy is it great, lots of super modern home decor concepts such as overstuffed quilted wall coverings and clear plastic modular furniture.

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

do you have a scanner?

no fomo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 14:42 (twelve years ago)

here's a link to some blog posts including scans from his others books on making your own furniture

giant block letters just make me think of pottery barn and Z gallery and crazy chintzy furniture places that think everyone needs to put weird shit on their walls

lacrosse sticks! garden rakes! a bicycle wheel!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

i dunno, i think if you're using them to show how much you're "into" typography and design then maybe choose something interesting? i can't tell sometimes if the letters are supposed to stand for something or if they just signify a sort of forced eclecticism
