yeah the vanity is a challenge, for sure. it's a trade-off for having a hardwood bathroom big enough to host a yoga class

when you strike it rich you should convert the whole room into a giant walk-in shower

Thanks guys. Currently arranging bedroom closet and waiting for new mattress, my first new one ever! Unfortch I can't find the number of the place I bought it from or the receipt and I'm paranoid I bought it from a phony storefront that stole my cash and fled to Serbia or sthg. guy who worked there kept calling me " the little woman" so clearly these fears are justified.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 2 May 2013 14:50 (thirteen years ago)
I can't post pics now, but it should be known that I'm now the proud owner of a small dress-up closet that contains my collection of dress-up dresses from various eras, my square dance dress, my wedding dress, my mom's old dresses, among other things, all in one little irregularly shaped closet. So happy. Dream come true. Also the bed is here.

so got a few samples for the paint in the bathroom and i think we're going for a warm grey, i would describe it as like the color of wet porcelain clay (the name of the color is "smoked oyster" haha gross i hate oysters)
i'm worried that it will look REALLY PINK when it's on the whole room -- it contrasts the cool grey tiles, also the maroon trim really pulls out the red tones. even so, it'll be better than matching the color of the toilet.

Omg I've been having problem after problem today! Was just envying your paint choice dilemma tbrr. I don't know whether to be happy or demoralized or what but this definitely isn't boring. Moving is never boring!
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 3 May 2013 19:21 (thirteen years ago)
moving is stressful, like how i imagine it must feel like to be a plant when its repotted. you have your roots ripped out of the ground and shaken loose and everything's a huge dirty mess and then it all gets stuffed into another pot.
― ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Friday, 3 May 2013 19:31 (thirteen years ago)
Current dilemma over here involves another irregularly-sized (ie antiquated) space for the fridge and a replacement fridge oh fuck it I seriously can't even explain it the situation is so dull but basically wtf appliances. Seriously, do ppl get taught this stuff on some day of school that I missed?! Feelin stupid, but ok otherwise.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 3 May 2013 20:12 (thirteen years ago)
Also plant analogy super otm! It's uncomfortable.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 3 May 2013 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
speaking of, my new apartment gets so much light, which means houseplants galore! my last apt was so dark that nothing could survive
i am going to make so many macrame plant hangers. SO many.
― ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Friday, 3 May 2013 20:37 (thirteen years ago)
lol elmo, that looks really close to the color I painted my bedroom
― mh, Friday, 3 May 2013 20:52 (thirteen years ago)
how'd that work out, then?
― ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Friday, 3 May 2013 21:03 (thirteen years ago)
My mom used a grey paint in a white and cobalt bathroom and it looks blue as all getout. So yeah, that probably will be pinkish. Bring out the grey with silver-gilt accessories or picture frames or something? I have no idea, fucking maroon.

The Cleaning thread got drapery on my mind, so here are some that I like, because finding jpgs is easier than making the roller shades I bought all the parts for a year ago.

elmo, I'm not ignoring you, I just decided to respond with a pic of my finished bedroom and haven't gotten around to it yet
― mh, Monday, 6 May 2013 19:57 (thirteen years ago)
I like the lines of curtains that cross at the top, though I guess you would need double rods for it:

I ended up having to take pics of my own book! That took ages.

So both of these are a single cloth or shawl, thrown over or clipped to a rod. Imagine that the first one has a lace fringe like the second one? Sort of. The part where it's partially folded to create a diagonal edge I haven't found a photo of yet.
― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 6 May 2013 20:24 (thirteen years ago)
io, you could do that with a single rod - the curtains wouldn't act independently at the top, and would always retain the same swag when pulled back.
xp, to the gauzy ones and the blue ones
― Jaq, Monday, 6 May 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
Sorry, other way around: Imagine that the white one has a lace edge like the red one, and then is pulled over to one side by a tie, and you'll be halfway to what I was thinking.
― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 6 May 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
Jaq, I'm confused: how could you thread two rod-pocket curtains onto one rod? Unless you mean if they had drapery hooks in back, maybe?
― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 6 May 2013 20:26 (thirteen years ago)
No, you would have two full panels laid one on top of the other, then fold both layers over and sew a rod pocket. Then pull the front layer back to the left and the back layer back to the right.
― Jaq, Monday, 6 May 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
too many unnecessary backs there
― Jaq, Monday, 6 May 2013 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
those curtains look like a sophisticated cat trap
― mh, Monday, 6 May 2013 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
Oh right, I see. That kind of combines the two different ideas: the single sheet folded over idea combined with the crossed tops. I meant to consider them separately but that works, too!
― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 6 May 2013 20:30 (thirteen years ago)
mh: That's entirely your own fault for having cats. Huge mistake imo.
― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 6 May 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
I mean, or if someone was attempting to sneak a cigarette out the window, what a fire trap
― mh, Monday, 6 May 2013 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
This reversal makes me lol: drape the wall and open them up for the door or window:

pictures >>>>> wordsty!!except seriously though all i see when i see tons of heavy drapes is a bunch of dog hair pockets
i am looking forward to scavenging for some cool window dressings this summer (see also/xp secondhand/thrift shopping thread!)
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 6 May 2013 20:44 (thirteen years ago)
AAH OKAY
So don't take this at face value because obviously the fabric is insane, but notice how the basic lines of this could hypothetically be one piece of cloth, draped over the rode twice and pulled back at a different height on each side? That's the kind of effect I was thinking of.
http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/108896399/Classical_home_curtain_42.jpg
xp oh this will totally not help with the dog hair, no.

Lace curtains made by tacking a rectangular tablecloth over a door, almost flat:

Lace curtains that aren't cheap polyester get expensive really fast so I'm trying to think of ways to use thrifted items, like.

HERE, this is a great example. I would never do this in my own house because lol lace but I'd like to use the idea someday.

You could also hang them higher so they didn't touch the ground. Or buy shorties.

yeah, that's cute!
i'm pretty happy with what we've got now temporarily -- it's mostly sheer white fabric of varying types, sometimes with accent fabricspretty boilerplate budget martha stewart, but that's so much better than what i've had for the last decade that i'm enjoying it
plan to try to recreate my dream room soonthere will be a table/work area for grading papers, craft projects, sorting, eating, etcthere will be a lounge area with comfortable place to stretch out like the picture below (though not exactly like that obvs b/c my room isn't that big)there will be my wonderful closet full of dressup clothes, shoes, and pursesthere will be two windowsthere will be a small dog (and also a larger dog if he pleases
it's the only room with carpet right now, and it's pretty nice and soft, so i don't really mind it. might get a rug?
right now it's full of boxes but i hope to get it in order ASAP
i also think i want it to be yellow? http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6107/6354959663_370ab6c550.jpg

sexy double daybeds
cmonit's for people who don't want to be constrained by chairs or beds, seated postures or prone postures -- you can just kinda sprawl out comfortably however you please. that's how i see it/what i'm after at least
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 6 May 2013 21:05 (thirteen years ago)
the formal sitting area is elsewhere -- this is to be the ~leisure zone~
