backpacks are so fucking ugly

tru confession, i have one of those hideous swiss army backpacks, i used to have a laptop shoulder bag until it fucked up my back and jaw real good one day. i'm up for something nicer-looking in theory but only if it won't destroy my body

Things I hate include when I am standing in a queue (e.g. a bus queue) and I take my backpack off my shoulder to get something out (e.g. the bus passes which the bus company helpfully makes too big to go in a wallet) and the person behind me moves up into the space my backpack was in and is going to go back into in 10 seconds

oh that is secretly great because you get to hit a big dummy with your backpack

that is another thing is that people w backpacks take up twice as much space and are generally oblivious as to the fact that they are doing so, worth considering who the big dummy is in the situation really

i mean really are you entitled to the space yr backpack use to be in

I would rather have my backpack on my back than some random person

like seriously, if we are not on a crowded train you don't need to stand that close to me

if we are on a crowded train, I'm not wearing my backpack on my back anyway

if you take it off on the train i give you a pass

I fucking love backpacks. Seriously, they are one of my favorite things ever. I loved backpacks as a kid and getting a new one was like one of the best things. I tried to use a more adult bag a few years ago and felt like such a tool I went back to my backpack. I'll never stray again.

I have a TSA friendly one, which is super handy.

anyway a plain ol beat up jansport becomes very acceptable in the summer imo
especially for beach trips and picnics and whatnot

I can fit lunch + a couple sneaky beers or a bottle of wine. guess I've never had to bring a laptop anywhere.

I've got a cool jansport that looks like the basic model, but has a special bottom compartment (just looks like the leather lining on the bottom) that unzips to keep drinks cold. it's the best.

I have (not kidding) an old LL Bean rucksack made out of olive-green tapestry fabric with leather fastenings. It looks kind of elmo's number if it were made for menopausal women in 1994.

Also I think I ripped the left strap out by doing ledge's slide-and-grab.

The tapestry is almost conceptual, it's just drab-green and silver leaves, over and over. I think. It's in storage in some high place because I can't throw it away: it's in perfect cond except for the ripped strap, it will NEVER EVER wear out, and my mother gave it to me.

monogrammed ll beans were absolutely de rigeur at prep school, sometimes slung hobo-style from the end of a lacrosse or field hockey stick, sometimes embellished with flowers & big loopy handwriting in white-out pen

I had a Muji backpack that was awesome and was thinking about getting a Herschel one for travel and stuff because they're functional but simple and plain and not ugly.

muji backpacks are nice but can feel a bit cheap depending on how low u go
