wow! yay!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 April 2013 01:17 (thirteen years ago)

I'm super happy with it and went and bought a shitload of product right after.

Jaq, Monday, 15 April 2013 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

I bet that feels amazing!

Hey so I would like to purchase a hair dryer. Does anybody have any suggestions? I get the urge to blow dry my hair maybe twice a year so I don't want to spend more than $50. Also I think I would like a diffuser. My hair is wavy and on the dry side, if that matters? Anyway, time to grow up and own a blow dryer!

carl agatha, Monday, 15 April 2013 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

twice a year???? im in total envy. i have a T3 which expensive but only because my hair is gross, super curly-frizzy and needs to be beaten into submission with heated tools daily.

(from a bottle you dicks) (sunny successor), Monday, 15 April 2013 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

what i can probably share is that hairdryers on the more expensive side tend to have a steadier temperature whereas the cheap ones fluctuate temperature, sometimes to the point of burning the hair. Read some amazon reviews of dryers in your price range because when i was looking for mine i found there are a gang of dudes out there who have nothing better to do than monitor their wives dryer temps then write on amazon about their important research. thank god for those fools, i guess?

(from a bottle you dicks) (sunny successor), Monday, 15 April 2013 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

It might look better if I dried it more often, but for most of my life I've gotten away with letting it air dry.

I was looking on Amazon and I saw some of those reviews! That's fucking weird and a little creepy.

Is all that ceramic/ion/tourmaline stuff all bullshit or do they actually do something?

carl agatha, Monday, 15 April 2013 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

Honestly I use a cheap dryer from Target and I haven't regretted it once, but I don't do hardcore straightening/don't have any curl in my hair, if that really makes any difference to how well a blow-dryer works for you.

My normal self has serious trouble believing in any of that ionizing/whatever stuff ftr.

yeah i dont buy that shite for a second

(from a bottle you dicks) (sunny successor), Monday, 15 April 2013 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

I have the impression from what stylists do that several things are more important than the blow-dryer itself: some kind of smoothing or volumizing (whatever your desired outcome) product; drying from the root to the tip when it has partly/mostly air dried, maybe with the root sections held in place with a couple of clips if you want it to lie a specific way?; and what shape of brush you use, flat vs curved. Just off the top of my head (lol).

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 15 April 2013 21:38 (thirteen years ago)

yeah definitely product (and not a lot surprisingly) and the type of brush def play into my straightening routine as much as the hair dryer. if your hair doesn't frizz easily you're pretty much home free with any drier.

(from a bottle you dicks) (sunny successor), Monday, 15 April 2013 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

(xp) ^^ yeah I have a cheapo dryer and it doesn't seem to matter as long as I follow a certain routine. Do you notice a difference when blow-drying? If I let my hair dry naturally it would be a real mess (and I have fine, straight hair)

kinder, Monday, 15 April 2013 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

I've been using the same hair dryer since 1997 wtf. Totally envy ppl who can air dry w/o getting flat/stringy.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 15 April 2013 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

First morning alone with new hair + mousse + blowdryer + round thermal brush + sculpting clay was intense but ended well. This clay stuff is new since I last had shorter hair. fwiw, I bought a FHI dryer 2 years ago for around $80 - diffuser and concentrator came with, it works great, though honestly I'm all for not having to do that every single work morning.

Jaq, Monday, 15 April 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

I can only air dry if I pin it up in twists fire waves/curls and even then I still gotta blow out my bangs.

I think the important things for a hair dryer are:
- powerful rather than hot (never use the hottest setting)
- even temp
- cool shot for setting (less frizzy, good for bangs)

I have an elchim (I think??) Which I got based on robynnnnn's rec. Almost got the t3 on sunnys rec but I wasn't willing to spend the money. (the elchim was about $80 I think)

just1n3, Monday, 15 April 2013 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

If I let my hair air dry it would still be damp the next day.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

I bought this one - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000R80ZTQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It has all of the pseudo-scientific garbage that is popular in hair driers these days, and it came with a diffuser, and it was $25. Oh and it has a retractable cord, which is a nice feature.

Now I have to figure out how to use it. I mean, turn it on and point it at my wet head, yes, but techniques.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

Ohhhh boy. Well, what do you want the results to be?

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 23:15 (thirteen years ago)

Good tip! Thank you.

Re: results ... dry hair that retains its waviness but looks more intentional and less I don't know, messy? I mean messy is good but neater messy.

carl agatha, Thursday, 18 April 2013 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

I think I've just figured out that I've been parting my bangs on the wrong side

What a revelation

gamechanger

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 22 April 2013 23:03 (thirteen years ago)

carl: I have straight-ish fine hair, bit of a bend to it but no wave, and lots of . To get wavy hair with some texture and body, so it looks styled but also like ” oh this old hair? it just looks like this!” I do the following-

At night: Wash and then spray in a beach spray dry like 80%-ish, blow out bangs completely, twist the rest of the hair into thick coils and pin down (I do about 5 coils).cover with satin hair net thingy. Wake up, remove pins and shake out hair, don't worry if its still a bit damp, you're going for a wave not a curl, blow out for a few minutes until dry, maybe use a bit of hair spray.

Notes: the coils don't have to be anywhere near perfect - you should only be spending like 2 mins doing your whole head, and don't worry about twisting the last inch or so of the ends.

just1n3, Monday, 22 April 2013 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

Xp it is! I read this thing that was like: if your bangs are annoying and hardd to style and you have a cow lick, maybe stop fighting the cow lick

My bangs always try to split down the middle (big no-no on my long face) but I've been parting them on the right forever. Today they are parted on the othersi de, and while they're still splitting a little, this side somehow looks better on my face I think??? Ytth says it looks the same but I think he's wrong.

just1n3, Monday, 22 April 2013 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

tomorrow is Round 4 of my quest for the short haircut that exists in my brain as a pure concept but cannot be described in words or even in flailing hand gestures. FFM has appraised the situation and advised shorter bangs.

BECAUSE I WILL REP FOR STEPH AGAIN IF YOU EVER COME BACK HERE YOU MUST GO TO HER.

Another stylist stopped me at a party the other weekend to tell me I had a banging haircut--that is not me, that is not my doing. Steph Caldwell is just amazing. The smartest thing I ever did for my appearance was take Ally up on that recommendation.

I think R's haircut is beautiful but know that in my place the bangs in my eyes would kill me and that wasn't meant to be a criticism! I always have Miranda cut them about an inch and a half long (even if, maybe, I shouldn't) so that I have many weeks before they creep past my eyebrows.

With going back to school it's going to be really hard to justify professional upkeep on my bright hair and today I found myself daydreaming about cutting it all off and dyeing it black. I probably won't, but it's fun to dream..

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 27 April 2013 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, same stylist the whole time - she was recommended by FFM and I like her a lot. FFM, I didn't take bangs-in-eyes as a criticism of the 'look' but I do think it's a valid criticism of the haircut. The front has grown out such that it now looks out of balance with the back, and the wispy bits on the side are out of control! I am glad of any and all haircut input, because I have limited visual processing skillz - that is why I come on here. And yes, they do drive me crazy by getting in my eyes, as well.

Steph sounds miraculous, though. Will have to try her if I do get down there, which I hope I will this summer.

I do this, too, even if I shouldn't either.

carl agatha, Saturday, 27 April 2013 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I should ask her to do this today. It'll work better with this cut than it did when I had my hair longer. With that other cut, very short bangs made me look like a prematurely aged 10-year-old sulk.

ljubljana, Saturday, 27 April 2013 13:12 (thirteen years ago)

Too short :/ but of course that is a temporary problem...

I emailed my hair dresser regretfully informing her my student loans cannot go to fancy hair dye and I must return to the boxed dye world. Harder than breaking up with some past boyfriends! But really, I can get orange with boxed dye, it was my bright red years when I really needed her touch.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 29 April 2013 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

That bend-a-bun thing would work with my hair (which is similar to length/wavy texture of the model), but I already have a bumpit and a different sort of chignon/bun-type implement that I never use.

It would be nice to do something with my hair other than just a messy topnot using just a pony tail band, but I am lazy (and also in and out of the pool/ocean all day so what would be the point, really).

quincie, Monday, 29 April 2013 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

FFM -- i had that exact same experience wrt dyeing red & school! in fact, i remember mentioning it before (maybe on itt?) -- you will live, it's not that big of a deal. when your life settles, you will have the wonderful luxury of going back and it will be a triumph.

in other news, my hair situation is dire, cannot wait to make an appt

I haven't had long hair for ... 15 years? I am kind of curious to know what it'd be like now.

Aw quince, I would do your hair! Salt-thickened beach hair is the easiest to put up.
