I have a tall but narrow room with one window that gets no direct sunlight, and I want to put a dining table in it and make it brighter and more inviting. I have:
2 pendant ceiling lights that I can move around and rehang at various heights, and 1 corner with access to electricity where I can put a table lamp which will define a reading nook/conversation area
There are no other outlets or elec in the room.
I'm not asking for a whole diagram or w/e but I would take any advice. Brian, you said something about light color earlier but I looked on packages at the store and I couldn't make sense of the various measurements.
At this point I actually feel like color matters less (unless it's a TRULY TERRIBLE COLOR) than proximity, ie my eyes are straining if the light isn't near/directly lighting the thing I'm looking at.

What can I do about the ugly pink accent tile in my bathroom?? The walls are covered floor to ceiling in white subway tile, which is nice, but cutting through the middle of it, is a band of smaller accent tiles in a gross pink. The soap dishes, toilet paper holder, and towel racks are permanent ceramic pieces of the same color. If they were a decent color, they might be pretty cool, but it's such an insipid pink. I'll post a picture later, but is there any obvious solution for overcoming gross color in a rental?
― Je55e, Monday, 28 January 2013 05:41 (thirteen years ago)
AFAICT, the ceramic fixtures are not cheap shit, and they might be original (the building was a hotel in the early 1900s and I found some stuff about it online that makes it obvious that it is largely unchanged), so I don't want to fuck them up. I have considered replacing the tiles, which is well within my abilities, and would not be too expensive to do right with quality materials, but if I could decorate around them, I would prefer that.
― Je55e, Monday, 28 January 2013 05:46 (thirteen years ago)
I dunno but I share your pain, my new bathroom is turquoise sponge painted, with pink tiles, plastic fish on the wall and a manky carpet. my last bathroom was the most beautiful one in the world so it's :( until we make this one awesome as well.
― kinder, Monday, 28 January 2013 08:06 (thirteen years ago)
Je55e, I have seen similar situations made very much better with clever choice of a really cool shower curtain that plays on the accent tile color just a little bit. Like maybe a really bold black and white graphic fabric that has just a little bit of the pink shot through? This would likely involve a custom curtain, but probably wouldn't break the bank.
Then again, maybe you don't have a tub or for whatever reason a shower curtain is not required?
― quincie, Monday, 28 January 2013 09:35 (thirteen years ago)
Or you cold commission elmo to do something kitschy retro chic, just *embrace* the pink in a big way
― quincie, Monday, 28 January 2013 09:36 (thirteen years ago)
could, not cold, obv. Sorry, woke up early and am posting to ILX at 4:30 in the morning, FML, etc.
― quincie, Monday, 28 January 2013 09:37 (thirteen years ago)
I'd say that in a rental you're probably out of luck, but if the landlord doesn't mind you replacing those..
I don't know if the style/size would match but there are a few (unfortunately pricey) companies making retro tiles that might match, including soap dish/towel bar accessories: http://www.subwaytile.com/elements_accessory.html
― mh, Monday, 28 January 2013 14:47 (thirteen years ago)
If it's just a little running border and you hate it THAT much (I would love a retro pink or green bathroom) then pick another border of some kind and put it over the top. I don't know, use blu tack or some kind of putty that peels off?

― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Monday, 28 January 2013 14:53 (thirteen years ago)
i guess you could replace the tiles if allowed to but might run the risk of mixing old and new to poor effect. my instinct is: do not change the tiles! pink, and i think i might have the same pink in my bathroom (tub & toilet), not so bad if you play it up as quincie says. black and white and grey work well somehow to downplay the pink. or maybe i have just gotten used to it...
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 28 January 2013 14:56 (thirteen years ago)
use mod podge to cover the tiles with a narrow college of decorative naked men
― mh, Monday, 28 January 2013 15:22 (thirteen years ago)
i'm sure you could replace some of the accent tile, but it sounds like some of the tiled-in accessories might be harder to manage? i'd check with the landlord / lease / rental agreement about what i could do but tbh i'm the permission-seeking type. it sounds like the color might be cool, if you know how to work with it, and if it's an accent color you should be coordinate other furnishings to good effect?
as long as the toilet itself is not pink.
― fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
it depends on what type of pink we're talking about tbh
― fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Monday, 28 January 2013 15:43 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks, folks. I am going to try looking at the pink with a new attitude and see if there's something I can do with it.
My little secret: I removed the TP roll holder and tiled over where it was. That fucking thing wasn't just pink, it hung over the bowl - it looked like the toilet was originally farther away from the wall - and I couldn't live with that.
― Je55e, Monday, 28 January 2013 20:41 (thirteen years ago)
My apartment's bathroom has a blue tub, toilet, sink. Baby blue. Landlord, below, has the all-pink one. Sister lucked out in basement with black & white. Love this cheesy triplex, but thankful I don't have the pink one.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 28 January 2013 23:42 (thirteen years ago)
My friend's place had a blue tub! They redid their bathroom a year after moving in, though, and just now they're remodeling the kitchen which was borderline unusable when it came to space. Something about a 50s idea of how you needed a separate dining area from the kitchen, therefore making two tiny spaces.
― mh, Monday, 28 January 2013 23:48 (thirteen years ago)
My grandma's bathroom had a dusty/deep-rose pink, black and white color scheme. She was not at all a fashionable lady so I think this was just the style at the time they bought the house, which was a late 40's/early 50's bungalow. I remember the bathtub was pink, and the floor tiles were pink and black and white.
I remember it being p awesome but it definitely depends on the shade of pink.

Yeh that's the thing b/c, like I said, it's kind of pinksipid. But now I feel like if I put some art or mirrors on the walls it will not be as obtrusive. I'm glad I brought it up.
