Side bits need to grow out more and get more wispy, or something! Also, she blowdried the back massive - I have just hand-squashed it.

i find that it takes a couple of days to get used to a shorter cut - not sure whether that's me getting used to it or the so-called "your hair will settle into it" thing - bit of both?

Hahaha I always squash it down too, she loves giving volume! I think it is really cute & will grow out in a lovely way, you probably do just need to get used to it! I'm glad you liked her, I agree her place has such a nice, welcoming vibe.

I feel like it needs more volume! My impulse is to give you either more rounded volume or else less overall length and go choppier. (I am always trying to make my hair choppy but it has too much natural bounce and turns into a bubble head if not rigidly controlled.)

I think laurel is right - the long bits at the front are hiding too much of your face; choppier and more volume, defs.

yeah that needs to be resolved either with longer bangs, which can be swept more to one side so less face-covering, or shorter ones skimming my eyebrows. The stylist did warn me that it would be a 'work in progress' towards the Siena look because the edges of the bangs aren't long enough at the moment. So I'll post another pic in 8 weeks for next step advice!

Actually she said 'fringe', not bangs, which made me feel especially at home.

Getting mine cut and colored tomorrow afternoon. Bringing following two pics but think I need to ask her to take out some more bulk in the back this time. I have so much hair that it just gets too big too fast otherwise.

I took that MW cut as one of my examples but my stylist pointed out that my hair wouldn't do that so I should look elsewhere. She's smart.

She was right, I'm not that elfin and that style would give me bubble head.

Could you achieve non-bubbly choppiness via minimal layers but a ton of product?

MW's hair is really fine and her volume is all from product and blow-out. My hair is bouncier than that. Anyway, I love my hair now, wouldn't go for that longer style again (or not too soon).

i went back to the same salon as last time, but instead of going with the same stylist (a "senior stylist") i went with the much younger and cheaper "regular" stylist. she was far more interested in actually doing something a bit different, and spent a decent amount of time talking to me about what i wanted, first.

my hair is still long and boring but she thinned it out HEAPS and lightened the load in the crown a lot (which always looks flat, no matter how i blow dry or back comb it).

i don't think she shaped my bangs right, though: she blunt cut them (and they are REALLY REALLY short), which doesn't really help with the fact that they tend to split apart. but they are much heavier than previously, which i like. i also wanted more face framing layers, which she didn't do, and now the blunt fringe looks weird with my hair tied back.

At least the length-of-bangs problem will fix itself pretty fast. I hate it though when you specifically ask for something, and feel good for remembering to ask (I often forget what I was going to mention), and then your request is ignored.

Any product recs for defining messy short hair? Can't remember what I used to use.

Spray wax! Or salt water stuff.

I was a big fan of Aveda's "grooming wax" but the men's version. A little bit goes a long way, and if your hair is fine (like yours and mine) it adds a little bulk that makes putting it into place a little easier.

You hardly need any and it works really well on his hair. I nick it sometimes but my hair is fairly straight and chin-length so it doesn't do much

It's supposed to smell like apples, I believe? I find the scent to be pretty gross but it doesn't stick around and you don't have to use very much, mine is still half full and I've been using it for about two years.

Nice! What kind of short? This will presumably highlight your eyes, which are already highlighted by ridiculously good taste in specs.

It's a little longer than yours and goes off to the side instead of long bangs in front (my hair is too thick to do that)

They really suit you - they make me want to ditch the contacts at least some of the time and get a decent pair of specs. A+ accessorizing. I'm sure the new pair will be well-chosen too.

I have sumo tech and like it but there's a spray wax that I have that I like better though I'm a little afraid it may have been discontinued.

Anyway, I went a little lighter and shorter in the back. I like it - I just need to style it myself tomorrow before loving it, I think:

I'm still getting used to the cut and trying to make it messy/choppy looking with the volume in the choppiness rather than on top and at the back. Some days I don't like it at all and other days when I get the choppiness right I like it a lot. So, everybody otm. Also, my God, it's so, so great not to have to iron my damn hair every morning.

I was looking at all my old photo albums from 1998-2004ish and I notice I used to always have short hair. Always! And then I remembered - back then, in order to identify yourself as counter culture or whatever (sounds dorky, but you know what I mean), you HAD to have short hair. Or something. It looks really awesome in all the old pics and now I am tempted to chop.

i've always had shortish hair because that's my only option. in fact, i have an appt tonight and i don't know what to do. same or try something else? there really aren't that many options.

also hII i can't advise you to chop it because if i had hair like yours i would be flaunting it like ann romney's horse doing that weird horse dance; however, it's your head and you should do whatever you want why because it's your head.
