Aww.

Well. One can't have everything lovely. Unfortunately.

and shouldn't even if you could. fortunately.

i, a designer, (of sorts) am currently having my bathroom remodelled by the insurance guys of the people (housing association) upstairs whose bath-waste flooded my bathroom. they came to me with large marbley-effect tiles which they think are awesome and i sent them away to get 6x6 plain white tiles and they think i'm crazy for wanting bog standard white tiles (with grey grout, my one concession!) but it's covered in insurance. when i told them i was a designer they looked at each other and at my flat with o_O faces and i don't blame them! i'm the one who will vacillate over tiles for a month or more for a client but whose bathroom was in a sorry state even before the flood. I accepted the insurance refit because it was better than what i had already (they're like this whole wall will have to come off and be redone but they don't know it was already like that before the flood). it's tragic! but my bathroom will function well from tomorrow when it barely has for years. i'm grateful that decisions have been taken out of my hands,

but, on the plus side, they send a plasterer over to skim my ceiling, and the ceiling is like a mirror of plaster. he's amazing at his job and so there's a contact.

part of me thinks i should give up this design stuff and retrain as a plasterer. at least i'd make money.

jed_, Friday, 9 November 2012 01:08 (thirteen years ago)

good plaster work blows my mind.

When I tell people my apartment is pretty empty they think I mean it's modernist but it's really just spartan.

You did the right thing, my friend.

I'm staying in a vacation rental right now with the same white subway tiles as we got in our bathroom only with white grout and it makes me so happy that we went with the grey.

Okay I can't find a table of any round or oblong shape that's small enough that I like better than this IKEA one:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/ikea-ps--dining-table__0138625_PE298367_S4.JPG

I orig wanted a round pedestal table but tbh they're mostly too big for where it has to go. So, okay, this table is my new goal until I find an old drop-leaf tea table or something that's better.

Ok I just saw a glimpse of my dream house, and it is the villa of Pierre Cardin, designed by Antti Lovag

I *adore* Pierre Cardin's house.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 04:32 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, that is living, is it not?!? Do you know anything about the designer? I don't. Was going to investigate because it is such a dreamy look.

I don't really know much about architecture or interior design, tbh, so no clue on the genius who was responsible. I just saw the house years back (possibly on 'Through the Keyhole'???) and fell in love with it.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 04:36 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know much about it either, but a quick gis suggest a treasure trove of bubble furniture rooms and strategically placed windows. next to living in some kind of converted cave, this is ideal living situation. dreaaaaaaamy.

I really need to get some pictures of my parents' bathrooms before they remodel, and possibly part of the kitchen. They live in a mid-century ranch home on a block where many of the houses were designed by the same architect, who actually lived in their home for a few years.

Master bathroom: pink ceramic tile, bordered by black ceramic tile. May have a pink toilet and shower area. Very tiley.
Hall bathroom: Green. Kind of triangular-shaped tub in corner, with shower curtain along both exposed sides. Again, toilet and fixtures in matching color.

My parents are pretty avid home remodelers, although they tend to hire out most of the pieces of the project these days, with the exception of some cabinet doors my dad's refinished. They've mentioned hiring someone to consult on bathroom redesigns, which is probably a good plan.

Oh man I need to post pics of the bathroom wallpaper of an open home I went to - naked gladiators!

Kind of coveting large coordinated dinner services atm:

And hutches!

I have a 12 place-setting Noritake (silver key pattern) set my mother in law gave me - gravy boat, 2 sizes of serving platters, serving bowls, fking TEACUPS, the whole works.
She gave it to me because she never used it and didn't have the room in her smaller house for it. It's really beautiful, and it makes me feel like a grownup to have it. But I'm kind of terrified to use it because I'm so scared of smashing it.

It looks nice in the china hutch though, so there's that.

A friend sent me a link to this delightful home decoration. I feel like it has given me a new outlook on interior design and the economics therein. The five star review is also interesting.

"I was reluctant to dish out the big bucks for this easel, but my husband knew how much I loved it and secretely purchased it for me as a birthday gift. I love it! Have know idea why I hesitated to buy it, it fits so perfectly with my living room decor here in El Paso and is such a conversation piece. Sometimes I use it to display my own art, sometimes I leave it "naked" to let its interesting colors be on display. I know I will have this forever and it's worth the investment."

Reading the product description and review made me feel like I'd been observing an alien planet.
