crossposting from the thrift store thread: i found this dinette set this weekend but didn't have the means to transport it and, as i was by myself, wanted to consult on furniture purchases with my bf before making a final decision:
http://i.imgur.com/5Mz5B.jpg
needs a deep cleaning & the surface needs a good waxing, not exactly what i was looking for in a dinette set but i kinda like it and it's only $58? thoughts?

Adorbs, excellent price, AND you get a leaf. Do it.

Buy the high-boy and low-boy set in the background while you're at it, WHERE ARE YOU? It looks like a magic place.

this is the other bedroom set I saw, i think it was around $300? highboy & lowboy w/ mirror plus headboard w/ sliding panel shelf. not sure what size the headboard is, may not work because of space issues in my apt. nice, no?

Aw thanks. I don't have anywhere to put it, though, either! Some day I will live in a house. Maybe.

― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)
got that table! woohoo
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)
the tabletop had some heavy scratches on it, curious if i should try to wax the top to shine it up a bit. would something like car wax or surf wax work? (the latter being hard to find round here tbh)
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)
what's it made of?
― Lee626, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)
not sure, some kind of plastic laminate with a grey woodgrain pattern in it
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)
anything good for Formica-type laminate countertops would probably work then. Never tried car wax but it may help, and if that doesn't work then rubbing compound or scratch remover (sold at auto parts stores) may be worth a try. Powdered kitchen cleansers mixed with a small amount of water may work. Surf wax designed for max stickiness rather than removing scratches so not sure that would work.
― Lee626, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
good deals

i had been stumped on how to deal with the pale yellow walls in the dining room but now the color of the seat cushions has provided an important clue, of course teal is the answer, duhh

a couple of the resin feet on the chairs are missing, tho. will need to solve that. or get a deep pile rug.

That is not the worst thing in the world, though. You could hide the legs with beside chests of drawers?
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)
possible but doubtful with the current bed position. i'd have to bust out the tape measure but i think it's a no go.

Aww.
Well. One can't have everything lovely. Unfortunately.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)
and shouldn't even if you could. fortunately.
i, a designer, (of sorts) am currently having my bathroom remodelled by the insurance guys of the people (housing association) upstairs whose bath-waste flooded my bathroom. they came to me with large marbley-effect tiles which they think are awesome and i sent them away to get 6x6 plain white tiles and they think i'm crazy for wanting bog standard white tiles (with grey grout, my one concession!) but it's covered in insurance. when i told them i was a designer they looked at each other and at my flat with o_O faces and i don't blame them! i'm the one who will vacillate over tiles for a month or more for a client but whose bathroom was in a sorry state even before the flood. I accepted the insurance refit because it was better than what i had already (they're like this whole wall will have to come off and be redone but they don't know it was already like that before the flood). it's tragic! but my bathroom will function well from tomorrow when it barely has for years. i'm grateful that decisions have been taken out of my hands,

but, on the plus side, they send a plasterer over to skim my ceiling, and the ceiling is like a mirror of plaster. he's amazing at his job and so there's a contact.
part of me thinks i should give up this design stuff and retrain as a plasterer. at least i'd make money.
― jed_, Friday, 9 November 2012 01:08 (thirteen years ago)
good plaster work blows my mind.
When I tell people my apartment is pretty empty they think I mean it's modernist but it's really just spartan.

Okay I can't find a table of any round or oblong shape that's small enough that I like better than this IKEA one:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/ikea-ps--dining-table__0138625_PE298367_S4.JPG
I orig wanted a round pedestal table but tbh they're mostly too big for where it has to go. So, okay, this table is my new goal until I find an old drop-leaf tea table or something that's better.
