photo frames for 100+ notes would be so expensive was my main concern

I had a vision before falling asleep of many rows of top aligned notes, possibly loosely sorted in each row to go from bigger to smaller l to r

love that!

varnishing them somewhere might be neat. good idea!

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Thursday, 27 September 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

Simplest, cheapest idea: Take them all down, decide on a size of "area" that they're going to take up and where that area will be, and paint a contrast color on the wall as the "frame" for the notes. Put them back up in whatever arrangement you like, but all notes should be positioned within the frame. Could make them a focal point without having to physically enclose or frame them? Also maybe decide on one kind of fastener, like...order a box of metal dissection pins from a school supply company or something.

Actually now that I've said that, I kind of want to use dissection pins for something.

If u don't want to put holes in your wall, buy fabric you like and spray-glue it to a double thickness of foam board (wrapping the edges neatly behind) and hang that up as the bulletin board. If you can't find fabric in a wide enough bolt, buy a bedsheet.

I like the idea of decoupaging them to something but I don't know much about that & was afraid the varnish would age worse than the notes by themselves. Mod-Podge is the big one, right? Does it stay clear or yellow with age & sunlight?

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Thursday, 27 September 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

i like the foam-fabric bulletin board idea. you could make it any shape you want - long rectangle at eye level, circle, thunderbolt, etc.

i used this on a table i made for my mr 12 years ago and it still looks ok (but it never looked that good to begin with why because i was the one who made it)

look how expensive this new school midcentury shit is

http://www.thrivefurniture.com/all-categories/

might as well just buy actual midcentury pieces at those prices

the late great, Sunday, 30 September 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know WHY i am so surprised by those prices but i am

the branding & product writing on that site are offensively bland in that special 'apartment therapy' way

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 1 October 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

I can't read apartment therapy, mostly because I looked at their "tips" articles one time. I think it was the "air conditioner doesn't fit snugly? put cardboard around it!" idea presented as a polished idea that killed me.

I predictably quite like the furniture but I'm sure there's better out there for around the same cost (or slightly less) that would support a craftsman or business you actually care about.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 1 October 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

As far as solid wood furniture bought new, the prices become insane (to me) verrrry quickly.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 1 October 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

THRIVE. are we selling furniture or operating a day spa? i don't know! who cares? let's name our products after u.s. presidents because we are clever dullards.

nothing says modern sophistication like derivative design labeled with white men's surnames.

i wonder if it's an ethan allen diffusion brand or something, the prices are up there

anyone in nyc have any recommendations for someone who could re-cover a few cushions for not too much money

max, Monday, 1 October 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

we have a long-term houseguest staying with us while she works in the area, rides out the rest of her lease in PA, and looks for new housing. so! i found a neat little twin headboard with a slide-panel shelf on craigslist, set her up in a little niche next to the living room fireplace. it's cute!

in lieu of a footboard we're using this... thing... i'm not sure what it was made for. it's a homemade wooden box about the size of a suitcase, with removable wooden legs that slide into side-mounted brackets. one side is hinged at the bottom and it opens out, suspended parallel to the floor with a chain. it's way too small & low to be a desk. maybe some sort of tool chest? no idea. anyway, that's the footboard.

i'll take some pictures later but trust that it's pretty darn cute. we're pretty good hosts, i must say.

You have a living room fireplace? I hate you.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

They just create an immovable object on one wall that restricts furniture choice and movement, L. I swear.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

Don't talk to me, I hate you, too.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

it's not a working fireplace, if that helps.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

It does, slightly.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

there's one in the dining room, too. it doesn't work, either.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

Well, you could put fire in it, I would just not recommend it

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

they're plastered over so you can't even do that! all you can do is arrange things preciously atop the marble mantlepieces.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

WHICH I HAVE DONE.

out of curiosity, what does everyone here think a fair average price for a decent sofa should be? I don't really care for the pieces on the Thrive site but the prices don't seem crazy for solid wood pieces with wool upholstery, especially domestically produced.

Sadly, 99.99 percent of sheeple will never wake up (I DIED), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

I need to find a new use for my mantle. I currently just have stuff sitting there that I am too lazy too organize, and an antique clock that's been in my family that probably doesn't fit with my decoration scheme anymore. I had a pair of candlesticks my mom got me, but she repossessed them last week when I was gone when she realized I'll never put them out.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

I DIED bringing the useful questions!

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

Re furniture prices, I am not a grown-up and my salary/lifestyle does not allow me to own grown-up furniture, so I think anything over about a thousand dollars is completely out of reach. I don't know what's fair, though. The only sofa I've ever owned was $50 from Housing Works.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah, my actual reason for coming to the thread:

After having a new bathroom exhaust fan installed, including having an expert actually vent it (instead of it just blowing up above the ceiling), I pulled the circular glass diffuser cover off the light over my sink. Discoveries: it is halogen, which is cool and would be awesome if it hadn't been covered by a giant diffuser, and it appears to be covering up another, probably older, ceiling bathroom exhaust fan. So if I replace this light, I am going to need to get creative or patch the ceiling?

yeah like i was saying it's pretty much ethan allen prices, the difference being you can get still get good-to-great midcentury stuff for thrive prices (esp if you're avoiding the big DWR names) but you can't really get good condition federal stuff for ethan allen prices

what does everyone here think a fair average price for a decent sofa should be?

LOL what's yr income bracket

the late great, Monday, 1 October 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

My MO if I had a garage or a living room big enough for a couch would be to buy/source an old one off cl and learn to reupholster it.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

also, re: sofas -- I was chilling at this awesome designer furniture store in mpls (looking at the few things I could afford), sat on this couch to make some notes on my phone, and noticed as I got up that I was sitting on a $10 piece of furniture

OTOH if you're actually going for the new big brand name stuff

thrive seems to make more sense

the late great, Monday, 1 October 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know, you gotta craigslist this stuff

i got this no-name midcentury dining set + chairs for $250, the top is laminate but i bet for another $100-200 i could get someone local to make me a new top

good find

max, Monday, 1 October 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

not exactly a holy grail find, this stuff pops up on the regular on craigslist for similar prices, this was just the one i grabbed. needs new upholstery probably, but i made friends w/ a lady who is studying upholstery and textile design and i think she can do it for like $20 a cushion

the late great, Monday, 1 October 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

braggin'

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sitting at a knockoff Saarinen dining set I got for $200, but I definitely understand why a lot of people might just want to buy a new piece of furniture instead of scouring craigslist and then trying to find someone to reupholster it etc.

Sadly, 99.99 percent of sheeple will never wake up (I DIED), Monday, 1 October 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

but that's fun!

the late great, Monday, 1 October 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

$200 is a good price for a knockoff saarinen, i've seen them going for five or six bills

for some people
