What?? I mean, thanks, but it's just a bookshelf/curio shelf and a distraction from the open-air garment rack on the other side of the room--nothing can make THAT look better, unfortunately. Except, I suppose getting rid of all my clothes that aren't neutrals.

I am very very very happy with the grey that I used on the walls, though. I love it every day.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 01:38 (thirteen years ago)

i love the plants on top of the orange shelves!
as it turns out though, i have tacky 70s taste when it comes to decor. i can live with that as long as there is a carpeted conversation pit somewhere in my future. i will have it.
it will be mine.

ps i don't think your plants + shelves are tacky

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 01:40 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, the orange shelves are those DWR cubitec modular shelves. We found a set super cheap once on craigslist, and got kind of into it so we waited until another one turned up on CL super cheap and bought that, and then one day my wife is on her way to the subway and calls me and is like "you have to come now, there are like two sets worth of orange cubitec on the street" - so I managed to carry them home. And it's been this thing since then -- how do we arrange the shelves, and how do we arrange the room around the shelves given that they're so freaking orange (which I love, but it creates difficulties). In the last place, my wife had the idea to paint the wall this kind of peach color and it worked really well with the shelves. This time we didn't want to paint, but the rug is a new addition that's working well.

They're really great shelves -- not that hard to rearrange/put together once you get the hang of it, and shockingly sturdy (although I'm still terrified of my little one figuring out how to pull them down on herself once she gets a little bigger).

i dont know L it just has perfect feng shui and proportion

the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:49 (thirteen years ago)

That's lovely! I appreciate that.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

My bookshelves will never be open and spacious and used for things other than books, because I have too many books and they're not "display" shelves, they're BOOK shelves. But it does visually tidy things up if you fill each cube fully, with the books in straight lines, either vert or horiz.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 03:23 (thirteen years ago)

yeah we do still need to finish "tidying up" the shelves, so to speak. And yeah, they're not the ideal booshelves because there's some wasted space. I've probably given up more books than I would like to over the past few years, although doing so is a godsend during moves.

look at this quarterstaff (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 03:26 (thirteen years ago)

I've seen shelves that looked good even if books were stacked sideways on top of standing books, what matters is that the heights be similar enough that books can fill up the space without leaving many gaps. Obv this is idealized and not always possible if you care about your cataloging (keeping authors together or w/e).

What is a good-sized couch for a studio apartment? I haven't measured yet so I'm not sure how much space I have.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 15 September 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

Something without a huge rolled arm, preferably. A lot of furniture has been designed on bigger and bigger scales to appeal to the eye of people with big rooms, but it's horrible for apartments. Things with straight-up-and-down arms & sides & backs will take up way less space.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 16 September 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

measure how much size you have

this is kinda spendy but i love it

I've had a crush on the IKEA PS sofa for a while, just not $900 worth of crush. And personally I can't do couches without arms, since the way I use a couch involves lying back on it and/or leaning over. But for some people armless could save space and still work?

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 17 September 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

^^^this. armless is out of the question for me.

jed_, Monday, 17 September 2012 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

No clue about quality, but for not much money? Unless 84" is too long, that's pretty big.

The IKEA Karlstad loveseat is honestly good looking enough, I like the cross-hatched grey "Isunda" color. I'd probably paint the feet, but it's perfectly serviceable and under six hundred bucks.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 17 September 2012 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

As a short person, the arms are too high for me to love it, but that won't matter to everyone and it's compact and fine.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Monday, 17 September 2012 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

i had an orange one, it was a little flimsy and got dirty quickly

the late great, Monday, 17 September 2012 01:02 (thirteen years ago)

honestly that might be an issue w/ all ikea though

the late great, Monday, 17 September 2012 01:03 (thirteen years ago)

that petrie sofa is nice

I really need to get a new couch this year. I currently have a couch/loveseat combo from a sort of circular furniture swap my family had going. my old couch went to my sister's house when I moved a few years ago, then I got this pair from her when I moved here. both are armless, and kind of inoffensive but not really my thing.

kind of still into blu dot stuff. they have a couple sofas in their catalog I got early this year that you still can't buy... assuming they're ramping up production still. kind of like this one: http://www.bludot.com/media/Category_Header_Images/Modern_Seating_Chairs_Sofa_by_Blu_Dot.jpg

My couch of six years is starting to look its age due to being in the sun all day and me being weak willed about letting the dog hang out on it. I never knew this place existed until June when I happened to walk in and see this couch, which is lower, wider, and with wider arms than my current one which are the things I wish I could change about it:

Haha that's great! I don't have an extra set of bars but I'll put that on the shortlist for dealing with my Langster this winter.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 21 September 2012 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

You can buy coloured electrical tape too, match your decor. What a cool idea!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 21 September 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

"extra bars" should be easy enough to come by, i should think.

tho the need for extra parts for lil diy projects, and my recent stupid experience with losing a g-d cap bolt for my crankset, has shored up my belief that there needs to be something like a corner hardware store for bike stuff. like, i am in here to find A stem, any stem, don't care, where I can I get some spacers, brake levers, "small parts," etc. some kind of place where they don't sell bikes, or clothes, or whatever, just USED BIKE PARTS, preferably in bins that i can sort through

catbus otm (gbx), Friday, 21 September 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

nb i have a very detailed business plan for such a place, i await yr inquiries

catbus otm (gbx), Friday, 21 September 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

The place I used to go to women's workshop nights was in fact like that, but I don't know of anywhere else that is. Otherwise you are absolutely correct.
