ahh, memories

rayuela, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

My boyfriend in HS was from Newark - his dad was a professor at U of D. I went down there to visit a bunch of times and liked the town a lot in general. I have a lot of fond memories of it and the people I met there. That said I was probably stoned about 90% of the time I spent there so it might not have been as cool as I remember it being.

Funny you say that, because I was definitely an enthusiastic user of substances during my time there. A couple years after I moved away, Jeff and I stopped in on the way back to the airport from my parents house because I wanted him to see this town that had taken on such mythical proportions and... it was kind of boring and a little dirty and there was nothing going on. I don't know if I was because I was sober or because I saw kind of seeing it through Jeff's eyes but it was edifying.

for some reason the image of Jeff deadpannily and belatedly telling Jenny her homecut bangs are nagl is cracking me up a lot! (sorry Jenny!) I think it's because I wouldn't have predicted Jeff as a bangs connoisseur

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

I've been cutting my own hair for a couple years now (one super cuts-cut somewhere in the middle) and its starting to look pretty terrible. I think I've done an ok job of maintaining side swept bangs, but the grow so damn fast.

I want to go see robyns friend but she's so faaaaaaar away and I'm so lazy. I just wish there was a great stylist in my hood.

just1n3, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

My husband trims my hair, and it looks fine.

My hair's faded to orangey gray. I'm going to be taking some things in to the flea market, I'm hoping that I can sell enough to get a box of dye--I want burgandy this time.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

horseshoe, looking back (I went back and looked at the pic that prompted the revelation), he didn't have to be a connoisseur to notice that there was a problem there.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

aw I think I must have missed this era of Jenny bangs, because your hair always looked great ime!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:05 (thirteen years ago)

justine you need to make a pilgrimage, like go to the beach and then get your hair done :)
i guess you guys don't have a car? sf seems somehow both more difficult and easier with a car

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

i need to go visit again; i like it there a lot

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

I/ my husband cut my hair for quite a long time. Sometimes it'd be good, other times less so. I started going to the hairdressers and then finishing it off myself when they invariably didn't cut enough off. Can't really be bothered with that now.
Justine, my old stylist was in Berkeley but I think she's in a swanky Haight salon now. I love her for using the clippers on a tiny bit at the back of my neck - no-one else has or will do that :(

kinder, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

Hairdressers always cut too much of my hair off. Somehow, they never believe me when I tell them that I like my hair below my shoulders.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

i love my hairdresser - she just seems to 'get' how to make my hair look rad

I had the best stylist for the longest time, then she went home to have babies, then I got a new stylist who was almost as good, then she moved to Texas, then I got a third stylist who is okay, then the first stylist came back!!!! But she only works from 9 to 3 pm during, M-Tu-W. All this happened within the last year. It's been really rough for me, guys. Just really really hard.

You definitely didn't, but maybe because you mostly saw me in darker bars whereas Jeff is sometimes right up in my face.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

Xps we do have a car but driving through sf sucks so bad. I need to figure out other stuff we would go to that part of the city for, to make the trip worthwhile.

just1n3, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

Guys my stylist not only does complimentary 3-week bang trims but ALSO complimentary interim neck hair trims! Maybe you are like 'eww yuck,' she makes it sound like women tend to freak out if she offers to clipper the neck hair. But I am down with this! I have a stupid low hairline but I love being a shorthair so this is just godlike news for me. If you have a stylist who does bang trims and you also have stupid neck hair you might want to ask.

ok i felt inspired by this thread so i googled HAIR SALONS in my hood, and found a place that has a bunch of independent stylists with their pics/bios online SO i just emailed about making an appointment for this thursday, since i have the day off and no other plans.

i think she will probably convince me to chop off many inches bc my ends are split to all hell.

just1n3, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

Mine has never advertised it as a bang trim, she always says I can come in to "clean up" the back, too! I <3 this because I also have one of those low nape of the neck hairlines so I always get THE CLIPPERS.

check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know why i bother to style my hair in the mornings sometimes. i always, at some point in the day, end up pulling it back.

rayuela, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

This is how I'm feeling about long hair. I've decided when I cut it all off (I'm going to try to hold out until next summer, I think), I'm going for a Juliana Cox 90s bob:

also that kind of dumb and annoying character from True Blood, but I think it's best not to dwell on that.

luv michelle forbes

it's been so long (for me) since i've had hair that goes past my shoulders, and i really want to grow it long again, but i might have to rethink my commitment.

rayuela, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

I was thinking of growing my hair out so I could be Alice Cooper for halloween but the fact that I can grab it into a ponytail is already pissing me off. I definitely, definitely have to get it cut on Saturday.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

oh man i wanted to be alice cooper for halloween last year but i would have needed a wig :-/

My aunt is a huge AC fan and for her birthday one year my cousin had million dollar bills printed with my aunt as AC in the center. :) so good!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

Alice defined halloween for me, I was SO scared of his album covers when I was little. And then I saw him sing You & Me on the Muppets and he's been a favorite ever since. I wanted to go with the straitjacket Alice, I could totally pull off long stringy hair if I could grow it out.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

besides I want to do that makeup so badly. just once. just one halloween I want to be Alice.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

That bob is good but in my case there is about 0.01 of an inch between it looking awesome and looking way unflattering. Find the sweet spot!
I have had a bob for ages but every so often contemplate growing it long so I can put it up...

kinder, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

90's bob is good hair
haha i don't have images on and this immediately made me think about Bob from Twin Peaks and "wow, so the 90s are *really* back, eh. crazy." and then i realized it was a dif kind of 90s bob. then looked for suitable images but they are all too scary to post in hair thread!!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

omg don't!

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

i was about to say, please don't post BOB in the hair did thread!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

I KNOW!! I would never! no one should!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

we are all on the same page here

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

That 90s bob is the same exact style that my mother cut my hair into when she cut it short as a punishment, so it's kinda not for me, thanks.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

You definitely should not ask your hubs for Punishment Hair, I agree.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

lol

"let's do...hmmm...fuck it, just give me PUNISHMENT HAIR"

I am actually in the corner facing the wall right now--because I'm piggybacking off of someone's wi-fi and it's the only place I can get reception.

*unplugs the webcam just in case*

my last-minute plans for a cut tomorrow have been foiled :/

just1n3, Thursday, 16 August 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

My hair is cut!

just1n3, Thursday, 16 August 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 16 August 2012 22:41 (thirteen years ago)
