i love style needs to get their hair did

All that time I thought I was being awesome and frugal and DIY and "Who needs hair cuts more than twice a year? I cut my own bangs!" Nope. Just looked like a fool who cut her own bangs with drug store hair scissors.

an old roommate and i used to cut our own hair in college. years later, we were like man, it's way better when someone else does it for you. in the interim i had several hair stylists who were like umm, who cut your hair?

(because in a quest to save money, i would sometimes cut it myself, sometimes go to the salon)

God yes, my college roommates and I would cut each other's hair. We were all a bunch of long hairs so it was mostly just trimming the ends but still. I'm just grateful I'm a professional person with a salary who can afford a salon cut and color every eight weeks and has the gumption to go in for my complementary bang trim in between.

My housemate just used to tip her head upside down over the bathtub and go at it. I never could cut my own hair for fear of snipping off an ear or soemthing

i am so often tempted to chop off my ponytail, even though it's just a nascent ponytail that i'm trying to grow out into a full ponytail

i hate to think what my hair would have suffered at my own hand if during my impoverished years one of my best friends hadn't been a great hair stylist

she did show me how to cut my own bangs properly but i tried it a couple of times and just, no...

oh. i did cut my hair once. in 1988 I took kitchen scissors and cut 3 fake 'razor stripes' into the side of my short haircut.

Haaaaaaaaaaa I shaved a ~ 2 inch patch over my ear once, kind of like this - http://www.z103.fm/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/rihanna-black-hair1.jpg - but 1000x more timid because I was a 13 year old living in a trailer in rural Delaware and not Rihanna and my mom was definitely not amused. I also think of the time I put a bunch of blue mascara in my hair to go see Mr. Mister at the Delaware State Fair and thought I looked TOTALLY BADASS. (spoiler: I looked like an idiot.)

SORRY I get a little excited when I meet people from Delaware.

from first grade, till i left it all behind for college! newark than wilmington. you?? (i am not super familiar with the rural areas of DE since my mom never let me go anywhere or do anything)

xp ME TOO because no one is ever from Delaware, it's all, i drove through it on my way to x.

my family has since moved away so i have no reason to ever return, and i think i have all these complicated feelings about delaware cuz i hated it so much when growing up but now it's like this place i'll never go back to.

Southern DE, mostly Rehoboth Beach but a few other towns, and then I went to college at UD and continued to live in Newark until I finally got out for good in 2000 (minus three years living in California and Colorado, and nine horrible months living in Rehoboth again after I moved back from Colorado).

My family still lives there. My mom and step dad are from families that have lived in Delaware since white people came and took it from the Lenape, so they will never leave. I really don't think Sussex County has anything to offer me, and I definitely could not live there ever. I have more complicated feelings about Newark because I spent most of my 20s there and have some good memories, but I have intentionally disconnected from my friends there for ~reasons~ and haven't been back since I was in a wedding in 2005.

My boyfriend in HS was from Newark - his dad was a professor at U of D. I went down there to visit a bunch of times and liked the town a lot in general. I have a lot of fond memories of it and the people I met there. That said I was probably stoned about 90% of the time I spent there so it might not have been as cool as I remember it being.

Funny you say that, because I was definitely an enthusiastic user of substances during my time there. A couple years after I moved away, Jeff and I stopped in on the way back to the airport from my parents house because I wanted him to see this town that had taken on such mythical proportions and... it was kind of boring and a little dirty and there was nothing going on. I don't know if I was because I was sober or because I saw kind of seeing it through Jeff's eyes but it was edifying.

for some reason the image of Jeff deadpannily and belatedly telling Jenny her homecut bangs are nagl is cracking me up a lot! (sorry Jenny!) I think it's because I wouldn't have predicted Jeff as a bangs connoisseur

I've been cutting my own hair for a couple years now (one super cuts-cut somewhere in the middle) and its starting to look pretty terrible. I think I've done an ok job of maintaining side swept bangs, but the grow so damn fast.

I want to go see robyns friend but she's so faaaaaaar away and I'm so lazy. I just wish there was a great stylist in my hood.

My husband trims my hair, and it looks fine.

My hair's faded to orangey gray. I'm going to be taking some things in to the flea market, I'm hoping that I can sell enough to get a box of dye--I want burgandy this time.

horseshoe, looking back (I went back and looked at the pic that prompted the revelation), he didn't have to be a connoisseur to notice that there was a problem there.

justine you need to make a pilgrimage, like go to the beach and then get your hair done :)

I/ my husband cut my hair for quite a long time. Sometimes it'd be good, other times less so. I started going to the hairdressers and then finishing it off myself when they invariably didn't cut enough off. Can't really be bothered with that now.
Justine, my old stylist was in Berkeley but I think she's in a swanky Haight salon now. I love her for using the clippers on a tiny bit at the back of my neck - no-one else has or will do that :(

Hairdressers always cut too much of my hair off. Somehow, they never believe me when I tell them that I like my hair below my shoulders.

i love my hairdresser - she just seems to 'get' how to make my hair look rad

I had the best stylist for the longest time, then she went home to have babies, then I got a new stylist who was almost as good, then she moved to Texas, then I got a third stylist who is okay, then the first stylist came back!!!! But she only works from 9 to 3 pm during, M-Tu-W. All this happened within the last year. It's been really rough for me, guys. Just really really hard.

You definitely didn't, but maybe because you mostly saw me in darker bars whereas Jeff is sometimes right up in my face.

Xps we do have a car but driving through sf sucks so bad. I need to figure out other stuff we would go to that part of the city for, to make the trip worthwhile.

Guys my stylist not only does complimentary 3-week bang trims but ALSO complimentary interim neck hair trims! Maybe you are like 'eww yuck,' she makes it sound like women tend to freak out if she offers to clipper the neck hair. But I am down with this! I have a stupid low hairline but I love being a shorthair so this is just godlike news for me. If you have a stylist who does bang trims and you also have stupid neck hair you might want to ask.

ok i felt inspired by this thread so i googled HAIR SALONS in my hood, and found a place that has a bunch of independent stylists with their pics/bios online SO i just emailed about making an appointment for this thursday, since i have the day off and no other plans.

i think she will probably convince me to chop off many inches bc my ends are split to all hell.

Mine has never advertised it as a bang trim, she always says I can come in to "clean up" the back, too! I <3 this because I also have one of those low nape of the neck hairlines so I always get THE CLIPPERS.

i don't know why i bother to style my hair in the mornings sometimes. i always, at some point in the day, end up pulling it back.

This is how I'm feeling about long hair. I've decided when I cut it all off (I'm going to try to hold out until next summer, I think), I'm going for a Juliana Cox 90s bob:

it's been so long (for me) since i've had hair that goes past my shoulders, and i really want to grow it long again, but i might have to rethink my commitment.

I was thinking of growing my hair out so I could be Alice Cooper for halloween but the fact that I can grab it into a ponytail is already pissing me off. I definitely, definitely have to get it cut on Saturday.

oh man i wanted to be alice cooper for halloween last year but i would have needed a wig :-/

My aunt is a huge AC fan and for her birthday one year my cousin had million dollar bills printed with my aunt as AC in the center. :) so good!

Alice defined halloween for me, I was SO scared of his album covers when I was little. And then I saw him sing You & Me on the Muppets and he's been a favorite ever since. I wanted to go with the straitjacket Alice, I could totally pull off long stringy hair if I could grow it out.

besides I want to do that makeup so badly. just once. just one halloween I want to be Alice.
