xposts hahaha-- in your dad's defense, men of his generation often have a conceived notion that aloha shirts are meant to fit very loose and baggy, regardless of what part of the world they live in

with most new aloha shirts (not the "modern" ones i linked upthread), a small will fit me the same as an american apparel large.

re: my tuck-in-- it depends on where you work. ive been at three diff hotels here and two of them did not have a tucked dress code, and one did. i personally (being short & boxy) feel i look better with a tucked shirt, as does our stylish general manager.

though you're right that aloha shirts often aren't cut that way and can tend to spill out when you want them to stay tucked in. the one i'm wearing is cut w/ tails though.

my friend sells the same ones on etsy for $50-$200 and will give me good money for it, it fits me pretty good, might need to be taken in just an inch around the chest, but i think i'm keeping it! its totally my best colors, too.

i only have one EG shirt but it's one of the most intricately detailed and well-constructed pieces of clothing i own

yeah the EG shirt i have has like six pockets on the front, it is like a safari / hunting shirt though

not sure a hawaiian shirt needs those pockets

also i got it for about half as much as that hawaiian shirt cost

one of the assistants from eg started his own line called batten sportswear, it's priced out of my range and sized for japanese folk but they had a pretty cool shirt last season called the "five pocket island shirt" that was like a hybrid hawaiian / guayabera done in some nice patterns

So basically, instead of trashing my old shirts because they get torn or acquire a big stain, I should cut all the unspoiled sections of my old shirts, sew the good parts together, and then I'll have some one-of-a-kind "fun shirts", right? And all for free!

Can I do this with bed linens too? I have a bunch that have ripped down the center. They're high quality soft fabrics and I saved them with the intent of cutting them completely in half and using them for single-size guest beds, but now I'm thinking I should sew different patches together and make some Fun Sheets

how do we feel about batik / wax prints

i ask because i am v ambivalent about them! i think they can look AMAZING but those prints that i REALLY love are rare. at best this style of print can be really thrilling and exuberant (like thomp's shirt upthread) but at worst they can be really muddy and ugly with an unpleasant hippie burnout vibe. also i'm not crazy about how they get described as "tribal" or "ethnic" and how they are used editorially on models of color - how exotic! and when it's on white models, it can come across... i dunno, colonialist? (i kinda feel this way about navajo print, too, but i think that trend has sailed)
