bought 200 dollar hawaiian shirt, still look like tool

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

i am v boxy in shape tho so it works for me. this is p much the reason fat dudes love hawaiian shirts and also guayaberas

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

i prefer boxy shirts in general myself

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

tlg don't you own like a million pairs of ridiculously expensive silly-looking sneakers? :)

your native bacon (mh), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

how is that shirt $200 and why does it have hip pockets

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

nah just two

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

the fur ones, other than that it's pretty much stan smiths, tennis classics and new balances

and these ones i guess

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

i am p short and boxy tbh!!!

stevie that shirt is great-- looks great on u

j crew has shirts that LOOK great but they are sized/sewn v v weird usually and often made of material that looks great on a hangar but not so great on you (or me, at least)

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

i think the thomas mason / j crew shirts are some of the best shirts i've ever owned, of course they are about twice as much as regular j crew shirt

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

yeah ive never found a j crew shirt that actually fits me

max, Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

i believe the appropriate adjective is 'crispy'

max, Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

damn, thomp-- lookin' good

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

...and fun!

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

today i am wearing arguably the most fun shirt in my office wear wardrobe:

http://i.imgur.com/jBGnf.jpg

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

that shirt is also pretty fun. (british high street seems full of short sleeve/loud print/vaguely aloha feeling shirts at the moment. the girl who stopped me to take my photo has just started a blog called 'oxford vintage' on which i appear to be the second post and i feel bad because basically everything i am wearing is like two weeks old)

thomp, Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

everything you are wearing is FRESH and CRISPY

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

tlg can we get back to that $200 thing? who made it?

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

my dad told me that he likes my hawaiian shirt but it's "too small" except it's not and btw FUCK YOU DAD ;_;

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

gr80 i see you tuck that shirt in, is that a dress code thing bc hawaiian / camp shirts seem too short to (stay) tuck(ed)

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

xposts hahaha-- in your dad's defense, men of his generation often have a conceived notion that aloha shirts are meant to fit very loose and baggy, regardless of what part of the world they live in

with most new aloha shirts (not the "modern" ones i linked upthread), a small will fit me the same as an american apparel large.

re: my tuck-in-- it depends on where you work. ive been at three diff hotels here and two of them did not have a tucked dress code, and one did. i personally (being short & boxy) feel i look better with a tucked shirt, as does our stylish general manager.

though you're right that aloha shirts often aren't cut that way and can tend to spill out when you want them to stay tucked in. the one i'm wearing is cut w/ tails though.

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

since this is now the aloha print thread too-- what do you guys think about this deadstock/unworn vintage hawaiian blazer i found at goodwill for $7?

http://i.imgur.com/lOwtX.jpg

my friend sells the same ones on etsy for $50-$200 and will give me good money for it, it fits me pretty good, might need to be taken in just an inch around the chest, but i think i'm keeping it! its totally my best colors, too.

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

!

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno if i could pull it off but i think you should try! that pattern is tripnasty

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

that $200 shirt is engineered garments from this season, which tbf is made in nyc

i only have one EG shirt but it's one of the most intricately detailed and well-constructed pieces of clothing i own

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

i would 100% wear that blazer

i am so sad that i am wearing a plain blue pocket front tee rn

what makes you think its a pun (Lamp), Thursday, 2 August 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

EG explains the unusual pockets then

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 2 August 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the EG shirt i have has like six pockets on the front, it is like a safari / hunting shirt though

not sure a hawaiian shirt needs those pockets

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

also i got it for about half as much as that hawaiian shirt cost

one of the assistants from eg started his own line called batten sportswear, it's priced out of my range and sized for japanese folk but they had a pretty cool shirt last season called the "five pocket island shirt" that was like a hybrid hawaiian / guayabera done in some nice patterns

i like

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

whoops, guess you'll have to navigate to the shirt yourself

i was not particularly jazzed on the rest of the line - nice stuff but there's no shortage of blue and orange anoraks on the market

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

too much time on ILX?

So basically, instead of trashing my old shirts because they get torn or acquire a big stain, I should cut all the unspoiled sections of my old shirts, sew the good parts together, and then I'll have some one-of-a-kind "fun shirts", right? And all for free!

Lee626, Monday, 6 August 2012 08:26 (thirteen years ago)

and if they're fabrics, cuts, styles or sizes all the more "fun"

the late great, Monday, 6 August 2012 08:27 (thirteen years ago)

they're different agh

the late great, Monday, 6 August 2012 08:27 (thirteen years ago)

Can I do this with bed linens too? I have a bunch that have ripped down the center. They're high quality soft fabrics and I saved them with the intent of cutting them completely in half and using them for single-size guest beds, but now I'm thinking I should sew different patches together and make some Fun Sheets
