I've considered going all-white because my room is painted grey and it's kinda shaded and a little dark in there, even though I'd probably spill red wine on it in the first 72 hours. But it's so fresh looking! I like white even though it's impractical.

Hello, department! I have not posted in this thread before and caught up on it a week or so ago. I apologize for the upcoming torrent of updates. Love all the ideas herein.
So, I am partway through a multi-part bedroom remodel. Floor refinished, walls repainted, badly-organized closet shelves torn out, and new furniture purchased. Yet to do: finish the closet, install new ceiling fan/light.
Quandary! I have a rather large closet and am planning on installing new doors that will only close over the hanging clothes half, with the other half being open shelves and open space I could theoretically put a vertical dresser or table in. As for the doors: I'm considering something like this. I can possibly retrofit the existing frame to accommodate the actual doors from IKEA, which could be economical. Still looking for alternatives, though.

i was totally picturing doors like that!so by retrofit you mean build up the frame a bit with metal or wood pieces, right? i guess it all depends on what you want the closet to look like and how it fits with the room and how much you want to spend. all i really know is that it's good to not have to see all your clothes all the time and to have a place for everything...

in my dept of the interior, i am apparently still really sticking with the colour white. my concierge/landlady gave me 3 cans of white paint yesterday, free! and a roller and pan.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
she also gave me all these gauzy curtains and a curtain rod! we shall see about that...
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't know what'd work, probably pick the shorter door size and put a 1"x4" across the top as a facade with a cross-piece behind to mount the track hardware to? I may have to do that regardless, even if I custom-build a door. Which makes me think, how hard can a custom door really be?

I also want this lamp (linked because huge: http://www.bludot.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/428x428/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/b/e/bender_lamp_wh-new_1.jpg) but it is backordered.

nice. it looks like its meant for laying an open book face down on!
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
I would never do that to a book! You can prove nothing :)
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
hahai did that to a book yesterday and felt bad.oh geez wait there is one like that on my desk right now.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I do that all the time. Or I wonder why a book is in my bed and it turns out I stuck the sheet between the pages as a bookmark
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

as i learned at ikea recently, what my place mostly needs is:to have less stuff in it
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
do that have that sample room with the picture of a smug guying saying "This is my home, it is only 249 sq ft but it holds all my things" and then there's a little place with every IKEA organizer possible on all walls and an elevated bed?
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)
ohgeez i don't think they had that bc if i'd seen it i would've laughed a lot. he is probably an alien. i mean, who can live happily and fully in a space that small? really??
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

I uh found a matched pair of these in perfect condition apart from some wax drippings, at Goodwill for about $2 apiece.

In various colors, some of which are more popular than others, I've found them online for sale from $12 up to $575. Pondering whether to keep them b/c THEY'RE AWESOME or sell them for $400 or so.

Omg your bureau! It looks great, elmo! I'm sort of against staging something you actually USE every day, but it's possible you don't have 6 bottles of perfume/lotion and 3 different trays of jewelry & a giant jewelry box and a bowl of bangles on your dresser.
(My entrance to the apt is also through my bedroom so the end of my dresser is also my "landing strip", ie it collects keys and receipts and packs of cigarettes. Nice work on yours.)

i am in desperate need of shelving
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
I have shelves that only go up to just over 6' high which is a waste in a room with 10' ceilings. I wish I had something taller but replacing them would be expensive so I pile books on the floor and wait.
― check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)
looking for business surplus companies for some of those huge closed metal shelving units so i can finally get my LPs out of milk crates.
also, cute bookshelves, please.
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:52 (thirteen years ago)
shelving is a problem in my apt because A. horsehair plaster walls means i cannot mount anything weight bearing onto the wall, B. baseboard heating along almost all walls means no shelving unit lies flush against the wall
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)
You need something with legs underneath but only in the front, that leans against the wall for support!
― check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Monday, 30 July 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
Or you could make those plumbing-supply shelves that "everyone" loves right now and screw them into the floor & ceiling (and lean the rest of the weight against the wall if nec).
Or...screw 4 wooden feet into a normal cabinet-shaped bookshelf but push the back feet forward just far enough to clear the rad. I have a link somewhere for hairpin legs, or there are lots of pre-made options for all kinds of feet.

meanwhile, THIS GUY lives in a spaceship!
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/09/garden/a-spaceship-of-a-home-in-puerto-rico.html
Mr. Rivera speaks of plans he had to abandon because they were too expensive (putting two small wrecked planes in the yard, so that they would look as if they had been downed by the spaceship), and those he still hopes to realize (installing a fog machine to make the house look as if it is levitating).

I think I'd been subconsciously avoiding the "Pops of Color" house article, but...AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! (The seaweedy stuff is pretty cool, it's made of modular posable pieces that you add together to make bigger structures.)
I guess...I'm glad they kept the rosewood kitchen cupboards. Solid specialty wood cupboards deserve better than being ripped out and replaced with modern crap. There, I said something nice.

i don't find the color house to be quite so enraging, but it just feels preciously staged like an overpriced boutique hotel and i don't see how anyone actually lives there in comfort, it seems exhausting. also, not enough plants
also i lol'd at him furnishing his home on fab.com, i've been talking a ceramic collector friend abt that site lately re: the vintage stuff they sell. the markup on the exact stuff i find at savers is astronomical. PAY $38 DOLLARS FOR A PLASTIC RECIPE BOX, BECAUSE DESIGN
