Yup, mine too. Ponytails and buns look so pathetic on me that I only put my hair up if I am pinning it in a lazy retroish updo. Which works for me, so no big loss.. but it'd be nice to have other options.

There are good youtube tutorials about how to get it poofier. You can use a hair donut thing and wrap your hair around that. This one is good for shorter hair:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTnhfU1ruus
And I think this one will work with slightly short hair, too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKNTJ-ZBcn4&feature=related
If I don't care that much what it looks like, meaning I'm not going to fuck with bobby pins or accessories, I put my hair in a high pony, then split it into two sections. I wrap each section around the hair band and then tuck the end under the bad. That makes it a little bigger, plus pieces kind of sproing off all around it to make it look poofier.

yeah those people both have way more hair than i do

i am trying to embrace "my hair is not thick or luxurious, deal with it" instead of pretending that it is ever going to look betterthis is just the way it is
― game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:25 (fourteen years ago)
I had to put my hair up for work for 10 years, and I'd love it if I never had to do so ever again. But it's so hot here, and my air conditioner doesn't work well. (I do take it down whenever I leave the house.)
I've talked about this before, but my hair is so thin that brushes scrape my scalp painfully whenever I use them.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 15 June 2012 16:26 (fourteen years ago)
I keep meaning to try the tube sock trick, but I am with LL - just not enough hair (and what I have is thin.) When I make a fake ponytail the diameter is maybe an inch and a half tops. Really I should stick to funky short hair styles but I am stubborn!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)
The woman with the bleach blond hair doesn't have much hair. It's just textured from all the bleaching so she can make it do things. I think embracing the way things are is wise and definitely the way to go BUT if you ever want to fake thicker hair, I recommend 1) not washing it for a day (I wash my bangs when I do this so they don't get all greasy), 2) hairspray, and 3) back combing. Then you can bun it up poofily if that is your inclination.
― carl agatha, Friday, 15 June 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)
Back comb it after you put it in the pony tail, I mean.
I don't have particularly thick hair at all, but it's wavy and it gets bigger when it's humid and if I don't wash it for a day or two I can make it look much bigger than it is.
― carl agatha, Friday, 15 June 2012 16:29 (fourteen years ago)
I do these! #4 is a bit much for some people but my hairdresser told me to save my pulled-out hair from my brushes and make hair rats. Now I can get some serious volume in my updos!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:30 (fourteen years ago)
Hair rats from pulled out hair is v. Victorian of you.

Did a GIS to see what commercial hair rats look like and happened upon this cute page. I want a 'hair receiver'! I store mine in a little metal index card box from the 60s or 70s that I had laying around.. nowhere near as adorable!http://www.quaintrellelife.com/hair_rats.html
I also found this. http://cl.jroo.me/z3/0/2/m/d/a.aaa-Best-Hair-Design-with-Rat.jpg :(

MOUSSE.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:41 (fourteen years ago)
I have a lot of hair but it's very fine and stick straight and can lay very flat if I use too much conditioner or if it's very humid out. Mousse is a miracle product for thickening up hair and giving it volume. I used a bit much today and too voluminous for my liking but seriously, mousse is the best imo.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
if you have a lot of hair, we do not have the same problem, sadly
― game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
Look at your cute little emoticon! She has a flower in her hair!!! AHHH!!
I should try more mousse. One day I want a true beehive!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)
She totally has a flower in her hair.
Do it. Then make an orange beehive. Take fotos.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)
I heard you can accomplish a beehive by pinning a bath poof thing as close as possible to the scalp and then wrapping the hair around! WE WILL SEE.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)
My grandmother had a hair receiver, and it had hair in it up until her death.
Dunno if you've seen some of the Victorian-era pictures of actual taxidermied rat and cat heads woven into hairstyles. Worn with dog collars*, toy car engines worn as pendents*, and pierced nipples with chains connecting them*, no doubt.
*All of which were fashionable in the 1890s. No, really.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 15 June 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)
Eeep! I have seen none of this.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)
I've seen photographs of the pierced nipples, the rat and cat heads was a drawing from a 19th century fashion magazine, and the rest come from references in print.

A student at my school – not one of mine but a friend of a former student who likes to hang out in my room – asked me today what color I dye my hair because she wants to do hers the same color. Part of me thought, aww. And part of me thought ––– people can tell I color my hair? Well, hello, why was I pretending anything there.
― Word of Wisdom Robots (Abbbottt), Friday, 15 June 2012 23:48 (fourteen years ago)
I'm kind of figuring that everyone knows that a 41 year old woman with no grey hair probably colors her hair, and not pretending otherwise. (And I change colors every time I dye, anyway.)

That's the orange I wanted! Mine turned out red with a slight orange tint. :*(
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 16 June 2012 01:55 (fourteen years ago)
when i used to dye my hair bright orangey-red, strangers would stop me and ask if it was my natural colour... i always wanted to say 'are you for real??', i mean, it was CLEARLY not my natural colour, it was very UNNATURAL-looking and i was also lazy about keeping up the maintenance so i had terrible roots.
― just1n3, Saturday, 16 June 2012 02:05 (fourteen years ago)
Hahaha! People are weird. I've been asked many times if my crayola red hair was for real, and I'm pretty sure a few of those times weren't in jest. :P
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 16 June 2012 02:07 (fourteen years ago)
when i was 20 my friend and i both dyed our naturally red hair unnatural shades of red so people would think we were redheads by choice. after that i decided i liked having red hair after all so then mine perversely went brown but he still didn't like it so his stayed red.
― estela, Saturday, 16 June 2012 02:14 (fourteen years ago)
i didn't know you used to be a redhead!?!?!
― just1n3, Saturday, 16 June 2012 02:15 (fourteen years ago)
half of my family has got red hair but i didn't get freckles and this produced resentment in the ranks of the redheads when we should all have been sticking together.
― estela, Saturday, 16 June 2012 02:31 (fourteen years ago)
My mother-in-law had naturally red hair, but she kept it dyed brown--even in the early 20th century, when most respectable women didn't dye their hair--because she was born in the North Carolina backcountry and they still considered red hair to be a sign of witchcraft.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Saturday, 16 June 2012 03:05 (fourteen years ago)
My natural colour is a weirdly strawberry blonde, it's so yellowy it doesn't really look like it suits my natural colouring. I like getting cooler shades of highlights to dampen it down a bit.
― kinder, Saturday, 16 June 2012 10:39 (fourteen years ago)
Tonight I managed the poofy bun from the second YouTube video I posted. It was pretty easy! Also the first time I ever back combed my hair, which was scary but ultimately nbd and very effective. Anyway, if you have shoulder length hair, I think this poofy bun is within your reach.
― carl agatha, Sunday, 17 June 2012 02:02 (fourteen years ago)
I achieved a long-term personal goal today and put my hair in a French twist! Turns out the secret is to put it in a ponytail first, then pull the ponytail really loose and then roll it up and pin it, like so: http://whatiwore2day.blogspot.com/2008/06/lazy-girls-updo.html
I don't have any hair sticks (but you are darn tootin' I will) so I just used hairpins.
― carl agatha, Monday, 2 July 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)
If it's not obvious, I'm having fun with long hair. I haven't even had the urge to cut it all off despite the endless stretch of 90+ degree days.
― carl agatha, Monday, 2 July 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)
Fun! I do variations of that look a lot but secure everything and hide the ends with bobby pins. I'm a BP fanatic.
I like this girl's blog! Occasionally batshit outfits but I like the stuff she describes as casual/conservative. ;)

Yes you do.
Maybe it's just because she's a petite, spunky redhead with her own sense of style, but she reminds me of ILX's own La Lechera. Although I think LL's style is more creative/less trend-focused.
― carl agatha, Monday, 2 July 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
haha! i am way more of a dirtbag than that lovely lady but i clean up alright.

Jeff and I were watching House Hunters no Saturday (yes, it is fake, still fun to judge people by their incomprehensible home requirements (why do you need three bedrooms and a yard when you live alone and have no pets?)) and there was a spunky little redhead buying a condo in Boulder, CO and about halfway through the episode I turned to Jeff and said, "It's Am@nda! She really reminds me of Amanda!" and Jeff was like yeah, duh, I figured that out thirty seconds in.

I got some F3kkai summer hair stuff & sprayed some frizz control on my hair and it smells sooo good, yay. Will comment on how it works when I try it from damp hair..

I think you can, as long as you keep the bangs long! (& buy strong gel/spray.)All are so cute, not sure I could choose! Middle is my least favourite because the volume isn't there.

Hm. Agree with that, I think. Favoritest is the last one.
My inspiration has actually been this lady:

I was going to warn against cuts like that in summer because the bangs on the forehead are so hot and then they get sticky and look gross. I had a variation on this a couple summers ago and while I liked it overall it was a giant pain in the ass. If you like your hair totally off your face though and are willing to do the bangs up thing when it's really hot out you should be OK.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Monday, 30 July 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)
I totally love #2 but I may be being swayed by the colour.
It is also p p close to the whole public school boy cut I love.
