'midcentury' is tricky because it might be technically correct in terms of period but 100% rong re: design

robin's egg blue in the living room ... kinda bummed that the clamp didn't fit on the lower level, might drill something into the side of the desk to make that possible. please ignore the mess as i quit my job, clean out my office and move it into my house.

Not a full panoramic view but one little corner of my bedroom, as of yesterday morning.

aw, laurel, i love your little vignette!
timely bump because i am doing some major adjustments to the apartment right now. thrifted 2 new pieces for clothes storage - a modern highboy on tapered legs, v midcentury looking, and a big rustic pine chest of drawers. neither are exactly collectible pieces, definitely well used, built inexpensively but they are solid and look pretty good. total cost for both was $65!

closest to interior decoration I got was producing loads of A4 prints for my wall with the inkjet printer I bought in 2007. Still got most of them up at least where the wall still shows. Also used actual lp sleeves blu-tacked to the walls. & a couple of actual posters. Just had massive white walls that were way too blank & about 10 ft tall.
― Stevolende, Monday, 25 June 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah , a few model show cars I made from kits a couple of years back adorn the shelves now too.

Thanks, guys! That angel painting is OOF terrible but it was a present from a family friend for my hs graduation, who had it professionally framed, and I've never been able to decide what to do with it, really. There's a picture rail along that wall so I think I'll at least hang it properly (and higher).

just got a call a while ago from my boyfriend, who was home today with neck / back pain. apparently he took an opioid painkiller and decided to hang curtains. "i dunno, they look... weird," says he. curious to see wtf he managed to do, lol.

you guys I am back in my own apartment, almost newly renovated - well, we did a huge job after 4 years of saving and planning, back in 2009, and lived in it for precisely 6 weeks until a fortnight ago, so it's new to us. It is soooo cool to go round seeing the design decisions you made and being grateful to past you. A shower I can adjust the height AND angle of! Yes, America, it can be done! Along with central heating that works and handles on drawers/cupboards so you can open them without clawing at the underside of the doors - doors which are soft-close (horribly quick to get used to, I slammed everything for months when I moved into the SF apartment). And a washing machine INSIDE the flat! A non-beige bathroom!
Don't want to post pics of my place on TEH INTERNET but would be interested in a renovations discussion as someone mentioned here or somewhere else.
― kinder, Monday, 25 June 2012 22:34 (fourteen years ago)
i really like the painting and i think it looks good there but also a little precarious sitting on the books, why not hang it up?
― the late great, Monday, 25 June 2012 22:35 (fourteen years ago)
the curtains ended up fine, it was merely d.'s perception that was skewed.

got this duvet (w/o shams)
http://images.crateandbarrel.com/is/image/Crate/SaarniSageBeddingF11
i like it, which is promising because i seem to hate everything i look at, bedding-wise. but, i wish i loved it rather than just liking it. and, white. i wish there wasn't so much white!
debating about returning it but prob going to keep it. or that's what i think today. i would like to feel more decisive about this.
― JuliaA, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)
sorry, hueg pic.
I've considered going all-white because my room is painted grey and it's kinda shaded and a little dark in there, even though I'd probably spill red wine on it in the first 72 hours. But it's so fresh looking! I like white even though it's impractical.

Hello, department! I have not posted in this thread before and caught up on it a week or so ago. I apologize for the upcoming torrent of updates. Love all the ideas herein.
So, I am partway through a multi-part bedroom remodel. Floor refinished, walls repainted, badly-organized closet shelves torn out, and new furniture purchased. Yet to do: finish the closet, install new ceiling fan/light.
Quandary! I have a rather large closet and am planning on installing new doors that will only close over the hanging clothes half, with the other half being open shelves and open space I could theoretically put a vertical dresser or table in. As for the doors: I'm considering something like this. I can possibly retrofit the existing frame to accommodate the actual doors from IKEA, which could be economical. Still looking for alternatives, though.
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)
i was totally picturing doors like that!so by retrofit you mean build up the frame a bit with metal or wood pieces, right? i guess it all depends on what you want the closet to look like and how it fits with the room and how much you want to spend. all i really know is that it's good to not have to see all your clothes all the time and to have a place for everything...

in my dept of the interior, i am apparently still really sticking with the colour white. my concierge/landlady gave me 3 cans of white paint yesterday, free! and a roller and pan.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
she also gave me all these gauzy curtains and a curtain rod! we shall see about that...
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't know what'd work, probably pick the shorter door size and put a 1"x4" across the top as a facade with a cross-piece behind to mount the track hardware to? I may have to do that regardless, even if I custom-build a door. Which makes me think, how hard can a custom door really be?
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)
I also want this lamp (linked because huge: http://www.bludot.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/428x428/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/b/e/bender_lamp_wh-new_1.jpg) but it is backordered.

nice. it looks like its meant for laying an open book face down on!
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
I would never do that to a book! You can prove nothing :)
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
hahai did that to a book yesterday and felt bad.oh geez wait there is one like that on my desk right now.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I do that all the time. Or I wonder why a book is in my bed and it turns out I stuck the sheet between the pages as a bookmark

as i learned at ikea recently, what my place mostly needs is:to have less stuff in it
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
do that have that sample room with the picture of a smug guying saying "This is my home, it is only 249 sq ft but it holds all my things" and then there's a little place with every IKEA organizer possible on all walls and an elevated bed?
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)
ohgeez i don't think they had that bc if i'd seen it i would've laughed a lot. he is probably an alien. i mean, who can live happily and fully in a space that small? really??
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

I uh found a matched pair of these in perfect condition apart from some wax drippings, at Goodwill for about $2 apiece.
http://vintageamericanpottery.com/fiestaware/1-Vintage-fiesta-turquoise-tripod-candle-holders-for-sale08.jpg
In various colors, some of which are more popular than others, I've found them online for sale from $12 up to $575. Pondering whether to keep them b/c THEY'RE AWESOME or sell them for $400 or so.

Omg your bureau! It looks great, elmo! I'm sort of against staging something you actually USE every day, but it's possible you don't have 6 bottles of perfume/lotion and 3 different trays of jewelry & a giant jewelry box and a bowl of bangles on your dresser.
(My entrance to the apt is also through my bedroom so the end of my dresser is also my "landing strip", ie it collects keys and receipts and packs of cigarettes. Nice work on yours.)

i am in desperate need of shelving
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
I have shelves that only go up to just over 6' high which is a waste in a room with 10' ceilings. I wish I had something taller but replacing them would be expensive so I pile books on the floor and wait.
