One of these days I will depot my eyeshadows.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 5 May 2012 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

What is the benefit of depotting? Similarly, what does that actually mean?

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Saturday, 5 May 2012 12:34 (fourteen years ago)

you know how when you buy single eyeshadows they come in a little metal tray inside a larger container? Depotting them means removing them from that larger container and putting them into a big palette, so they are all together and not floating round in a jumble.

just1n3, Saturday, 5 May 2012 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

Ah. That makes sense.

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Saturday, 5 May 2012 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

if you ever want to do it, there are a billion youtubes on how to (it involves heating up the container iirc).

just1n3, Saturday, 5 May 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

Yay Sunny! That's good news.

Here are my new depotted Pallettes: http://instagr.am/p/KQJzQljbCB/

You use an old fork to hold the plastic bit over a candle flame til disgusting smoke chokes you/melts the glue holding the disc to the plastic, then pop the disc off with the fork. It was messy but now I can see many of my colours all at once. Success!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 5 May 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

wowsers!
that also makes me realize that i really haven't explored the wonderful world of eye shadow and i def don't have lighter colours even tho they are prob best for me + eyeliner - dark colours make me look like i've been punched in the eye, imo!
which also has something to do with my skin's fairness + pink undertones. i've tried yellow or green powders and they don't do much for my skintone! but i haven't really explored too many options. also i don't like wearing layers of makeup, primer, etc. the only thing i'm wearing these days is a powder foundation from Mineral Hygienics, which doesn't make my skin break out - this is also bc my skin has gotten a lot more even-toned and breaks out waaay less if at all because rx topical drugz yaaay

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 5 May 2012 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

I've seen tutorials that use a flat iron to melt the glue or heating the shadows in the oven.

Another reason to depot is that some palettes, like the Urban Decay ones for example, take up so much space with all the packaging.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 5 May 2012 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

I love Urban Decay eye potion primer... works a treat.

For Christmas this past year I also got a HUGE Sephora makeup palette/box/etc. I love it. The shadows are really pretty great. The only problem I am facing is what I'll do if I ever travel.

I really like the UD pencil liner in perversion. Dark-ass matte black. Looks 95% like a liquid on, which is great for me because I am absolutely incompetent at applying liquid eyeliner. Nice fatty black line.

I was just reading some article about beauty products that remind us of times/places/people and someone mentioned a lipgloss that my friends and I were obsessed with in HS. It was called Naturistics and looked like this:

I think I had one in every flavor. We'd compare and trade and stuff. It was a bit strange.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

I remember that stuff!!

tehresa, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:10 (fourteen years ago)

we were obsessed with a cutex lipstick and nail polish called 'blue opal'. it was pink with a blue sheen. seriously need to revive this line

fine with 49 (sunny successor), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

omg cutex was my obsession too. frosted hot pink, frosted magenta, frosted plum.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

oh I don't think mine was cutex but I've just been reminded of the frosted light pink lipstick I would rock at 14 that I thought was the height of fashion.. :D

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think we had Cutex lipsticks in America - at least not since I was a kid. Huh.

As far as lipsticks went we were really into reddish browns and dark dark plums like Loreal Toast and Revlon Black Cherry.

Because I have lolhuge lips I tend to stick to neutrals. I can't imagine ever wearing either of those colors now. LOL 90s.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

There was also a dark purple almost black lipstick by Wet n' Wild that I coveted and I had a full on primary purple lipstick that I was obsessed with at 18. I also had violet streaks in my hair that year. I guess I really really liked purple.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

omg i remember how popular those brownish lipstick shades were in the 90s! there is photographic evidence of me in such a color iirc. so so terrible.

just1n3, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

I had a comb (Sweet Georgia Brown?) with purple wax on it that you could brush against your hair to create 'streaks.' It mostly made my blondeish hair kind of a poop brown, and waxy. Yay!
Those dark purple/auburn lipsticks of the 90s will forever haunt me. Reds and pinks all the way!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

Woah FFM Sweet Georgia Brown was the maker of the purple lipstick I was talking about.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

It looked like this but without glitter:

http://www.fiebargain.com/imageslarge/M%20SGB%20lipstick%20funky99)1.JPG

Pretty sure I had the green one too. Dear God.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

Hair mascara! That stuff was disgusting, I wore it all the time for a couple of months. Rimmel black cherries lipstick had something of a cult status, even thanked in the Kenickie album inlay iirc.

kinder, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

aw i loved 90s brown lipstick sometimes i still wear it so there!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

i have started wearing lipstick again. (i also prefer the darker shades!) it wears off by 10 am, but it's fun to do as i'm getting ready in the mornings. maybe i need to find more expensive lipstick.

rayuela, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

I have nothing against dark lipstick for those who can pull it off! I'm just not one of those people though sadly I didn't realize that when it was at its most popular.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, i think brown in particular looks really dated, but i still love it. and i am sort of dated!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh man there was a series of l'oreal shades that came in these long skinny tubes... I'm going butts trying to remember the shades I wore. They were dark matte red-brown, I think there was definitely a black cherry shade in there. Also clinique moon violet was my jam.

tehresa, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

I totally remember those long skinny Loreal tubes!

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

Omg lmao at going butts! Autocomplete fail!!!!!!

tehresa, Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:29 (fourteen years ago)

I figured as much and lold on the inside. :)

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

90s Makeup: Revlon Street Wear.

I think I had the Wet and Wild version of Vamp.

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

what is going butts???

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

going nuts i guess. but maybe not...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:54 (fourteen years ago)

i have this Bite lip stick/pencil stuff that you put on then blot the put on again and blot then put on again and that seems to stick for a while

blotting. it works.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it was meant to say going nuts

tehresa, Thursday, 7 June 2012 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

"Going butts" is pretty great, though.

carl agatha, Thursday, 7 June 2012 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

totally

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 7 June 2012 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

going butts!!!! also tehresa, i had like five of those loreal skinny lipsticks! they were kind of drying iirc, like painting your lips with a brown sharpie.

horseshoe, Thursday, 7 June 2012 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah they were super drying

tehresa, Thursday, 7 June 2012 03:44 (fourteen years ago)

We are reshooting our staff photos today with a prof photographer. Last night I was frantically looking for new foundation and a sephora clerk assured me this looked good but I just went to the bathroom and I look yellow! I'm kind of freaking out! What do I do? Lots of powder?

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 13:51 (fourteen years ago)

I should have known she was crazy when she told me an even darker one looked good... And when she gave me eye makeup in the completely wrong color family with so much crease shadow I looked like a hooker. I didn't buy her eye look but I really needed foundation. I will return it but new I'm freaking out!

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe just tell photog you are concerned and ask that he/she double check it when doing photoshoppy stuff.

Maybe not so much on the powder so you don't look chalky.

You are v v pretty and the pic will be awesome, don't worry!

quincie, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks...I will alert her for retouching purposes. I'm also managing the shoot so by the time I have my session in gonna be so haggard!!

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

This is the only time I've ever had the opportunity for a pro photo and I wanted it to be perfect :(

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

Could you rub a little body lotion on your face to whiten the fdtn?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

I had my staff picture taken and the lights were so bright I honestly look like i'm about to cry! I don't want to be all diva-esque so I didn't ask for a re-shoot but man that pic is awful

kinder, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

It turned out looking sort of ok, though sadly I and another of our staff had to reshoot indoors because the outside light was not complimentary to our fair complexions.

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

Ha, I have that same problem!
