i am eventually going to inherit an entire house worth of those so i'm not in a rush - but yeah, crazy expensive if you want a good one

what do you all think of cowhide? i like the idea because they don't stain and a dog can't ruin one by peeing on it.

I've been on the lookout for a rug for two years :( Not that I've been overly proactive about it but still...

I like this thread and I like your pics, late great.

I just want to show off one of my prized possessions, which I got for a steal (I've posted this to another thread, but a year later I'm still in love w/ it)

That's a pic from the store. It cost me only $375!

Pita Malört (Je55e), Saturday, 28 April 2012 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

Oh that's stunning! And are those highball glasses? We have similar ones if so ..

Oh haha. Damn zing / invisible xposts!

Oh!! Those are from the store, BUT, I have similar colored/gold accented glasses that were a WONDERFUL spur-of-the-moment Xmas gift from our own carl agatha! I love them. We were browsing Macy's one day at lunch and next thing you know, I was the happy new owner of those glasses.

My big cat sleeps on the bottom shelf, under the drawers. When she's upset over a scolding or nail trimming, she flees there and glowers at me.

O_o

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 28 April 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

I love that, and I rarely give furniture a second glance!

quincie, Saturday, 28 April 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

wish i had room for that sort of thing

the late great, Saturday, 28 April 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

Funny you should say that b/c I bought it because I live in a (large) studio apartment. I am using it as a room divider, creating a bedroom space. I installed mirrors as backing, which really does give the illusion of more space while also blocking the view of the bed from the living area.

two weeks pass...

Oh, I found that china hutch that I found at a thrift shop. It was inexplicably underpriced, both in terms of what I figure it's worth and compared to how a lot of crap there is priced way too high.

martinsville

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

??

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

Martinsville? Brand, you mean? IDK.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

(meant to say above "found that *PICTURE* of the hutch")

Pita Malört (Je55e), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

yeah martinsville was a really popular brand of mid century furniture that kinda split the diff between the whole hog futurism of george nelson and american traditional

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

they also made traditional furntiure. one of the hallmarks i think was that they did modern design in trad woods like maple or pine whereas nelson went for space-age materials like plastics, metals and plywoods

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, I see. I'm pretty ign'nt, tbh. I can't remember if I've checked for labels, and I would never know how to ID a particular piece. I will read about Martinsville, though.

Any pointers on educating myself online?

Pita Malört (Je55e), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

i spend a lot of time looking at craigslist and ebay and a lot of the time that stuff is identified and eventually you'll see something very similar or the same thing which can help you nail down what you have (within a couple years if not exactly)

it is obv a lot harder if you don't have tags - there are def vintage clothes and sneaker bibles that show you how to identify random shit and figure out what's rare and what's not but i think there's not as much out there for furniture

not sure why that might be except there are a lot more furniture knockoffs and it's in dealers interest to be able to push the knockoffs?

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

haha i do not trust seller descriptions of furniture on craiglist at all, no way man

judas, a homo (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

def not if they are unmarked

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

someone once said about yelp that you can learn to "read" the yelp reviews, think craigslist is similar, it's easy to spot credible sellers vs scammers after awhile, especially if you check regularly

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

oh sure, i don't necessarily mean scammers, i just mean folks for whom "antique" tends to mean anything 30 years old and who describe veneered furniture as "solid wood"

judas, a homo (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

there is so much straight up GARBAGE from the 50/60/70s being marketed as midcentury, shit like stained glass lamps you'd see in a wendy's or round table pizza

old packet of staples MIDCENTURY MODERN

best to just search for "FAKE ASS"

jed_, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

"old packet of staples MIDCENTURY MODERN" reminds me of Regretsy's category called "Stuff that is not steampunk," where they repost stuff from Etsy like a crappy dress or lamp that someone embellished with lace or beads and then called Steampunk. In fact, iirc, Etsy sellers also abuse the description "MCM."

my new favorite books to collect from thrift stores are illustrated home decorating books from the 50s - 80s

judas, a homo (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 17 May 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

'midcentury' is tricky because it might be technically correct in terms of period but 100% rong re: design
