iirc it only lasts a few years?

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

xp I thought it lasted longer. Laurel's #1 is my reason. Also, fear they'd screw it up.

http://mediacdn.zennioptical.com/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/255x102/3b61aaa59667ba46a41804bac5f380ed/2/2/2217-15_2011-8-12_.jpg

These are a bit like 3, and a lot like my current frames, but I like these too.

xp Robyn, I'm paying obsessive detail to measurements, but I'm new to all of this. I'm getting some frames in the mail in a couple of days to try on, but I hate trying on frames–I don't have contacts, so it's not like I can see them very well when I try them on in person! So I'll take pictures and see what I think.

I wish my vision were better so they would be cheaper, but $60-130 is worlds better than the $400 I paid for my last pair.

JuliaA, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

yah i have about a dozen pairs now, of which i really only wear 2 pairs on the reg, but the total cost was maybe a 150? the last irl pair i bought - even with a heavy discount bc my mum works for an optometrist - were a couple hundred.

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:29 (fourteen years ago)

#4

I have a question. Do any of you get bothered by the mechanics of wearing glasses? I mean, I love mine and the way I look in glasses in general but rarely wear them because I hate when they slide down my nose, or get spots on the lenses, or fog up, or when I can't lay on my side while watching tv etc. I just find wearing them annoying and find I reach for my contacts nearly every day as a result.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

I guess wearing them more often is the only way to get over it. I also hate having to switch between reg and RX sunglasses when going in and outdoors.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

I hate the mechanics of wearing contacts even more

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't had glasses I was willing to wear outside my house in about two months, and I tell you, I'm missing the mechanics of glasses more. My eyes need a break! Also, glasses are protection from wind (esp on bike) that dries out my eyes, and protection from hair or dust or specs of dirt getting into them.

Also they are "stick on face, leave house" instead of "go to bathroom, wash hands, open container, rinse/rub lenses, put finger on eyeball, reverse all steps."

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

Hmmm. Yeah I'm pretty careless with my contacts. I have dalies but sometimes sleep in them if I foget to take them out. I can also put them in/take them out without looking in the mirror so it's pretty simple. I guess I just tolerate them well? That said, at one point I did wear them so much that my eyes grew blood vessels where they're not supposed to but, uh, I think that's cleared up now.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

i've had specs since i was 13 so i'm just used to all that stuff - REALLY wanted contacts when i was younger, but tbh i'm like lexy and have huge dark circles which glasses hide well.

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. Circles are my major face hate and one of the best things about wearing glasses when I choose to do so is that they're a lot less noticeable.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

i like glasses because they are a badge of high intellect

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

:)

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

i have been getting sick of the mechanics of glasses also i am lol vain so i am thinking of switching to contacts, but i am scared. i don't know if i can touch my eyeballs every day.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

Oh you get used to it. Plus you don't actually touch your eye - just the lenses do!

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

eeeeee okay maybe

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

in all seriousness, i am a guy and i have about 15 hairs left, so they are my only option if i want to accessorize my head (which i do by the way).

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

I want to wear my glasses! I just wish there was a way to guarantee they'd never fog up or slide down my nose or get dirty. :/

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

yeah the accessorizing the head thing is a thing. years ago a woman i knew commented that she always had to choose between glasses and bold earrings. at the time i didn't wear glasses, but now that remark haunts me as i frequently wear glasses + earrings. am i over-accessorizing my head?

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

You are probably not but that is a thing for me. I almost never wear earrings when I wear my glasses. I have a small head/features and think glasses and big earrings are overwhelming on me. I've seen people do it and pull it off really well but I'm not comfortable with it myself.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

If I do wear earrings and glasses together they're nearly always small posts.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

if someone wants to buy me lasik i am all about it. i never figured out how to wear glasses and i am always dropping them on the floor and stepping on them and stuff. sorry, that seems counter to the spirit of the thread!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

I had a lengthy discussion with a friend about the semiotics of eyeglass adjusting

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

the one fingered push at the bridge of the glasses = nerd

however, adjusting them by grasping one or the intersections between arm and glass part is okay

pinky in or out may also say something

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

the one fingered push at the bridge of the glasses = nerd

i do this about every five seconds.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

I do too, I didn't realize I was a nerd until my friend pointed it out to me

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

Re dailies: I have to have torics, and they don't com in dailies (afaik), and they are more expensive than reg lenses so it's kinda a thing that I have to take care of pretty carefully.

Re glasses: One way not to break them or whatever is to have REALLY HORRIBLE VISION! That way you can never take your glasses off unless you want to be struck by a city bus while crossing an intersection. Which doesn't happen all that often so for the most part my glasses never leave my face.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

dan have you seen the remake of g w the dragon tatoo remake yet? i feel like you could write a senior thesis on what daniel craig does with his specs in that

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i can see that. when i first got glasses i barely needed them, but my eyesight has gotten worse, and part of me just won't accept that i should probably leave them on all day. i'm one of those that takes them off when i'm out to dinner or whatever.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

xp

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

no caek but your description is the first compelling reason I've seen to go see it

bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

I mentioned upthread that I wore contacts 99% of my waking hours for 15 years, and now I think I haven't worn contacts in a couple months, and then only for a couple days? Not sure what is up with that. Kind of thinking about getting a second pair of glasses and/or prescription sunglasses now?

Laurel, I am pretty sure my disposables are torics, but they're the two week variety, so you are probably right.

caek's point re: Craig's character in TGWTDT is way relevant. I actually tried doing that "hang from one ear when not needing glasses" bit a few times in the days following viewing the movie, but I can't remember if he was doing it to read or what?

mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

i'm one of those that takes them off when i'm out to dinner or whatever.

The thought of even trying to do this is making me lol. Without glasses I'd probably eat the tablecloth and wipe my mouth on someone's tie.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

I took my glasses off while exercising with coworkers a couple weeks ago and I couldn't tell if someone that I could see standing in the next room through the window on the door was facing toward us or away. It kept creeping me out so I had to ask someone if there was a guy watching us.

mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

dayo the other compelling reason is that "orinoco flow" is on the soundtrack

caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

it took me a while to realise that i absolutely could not pull off dangly/bold earrings with glasses. i'm so used to wearing my glasses - i only take them off to sleep - that i don't even think about it.

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

IMO if you have to push your glasses up all the time, they don't fit you or you should stop into an optician and have them adjusted.

horseshoe, I wear glasses and giant hoop earrings every day and if that is wrong, I don't want to be right. I will skip earrings if I wear a necklace, though.

I have two pairs (well, three but I don't like one of them) of acetate frames now - tortoise shell and clear cat eyes. They are both pretty big, so I sort of want something a little more delicate, black, wire-framed. I like these, but Jesse hates them - http://www.zennioptical.com/?q=597521 . And I was thinking about these, but they might be a little boring - http://www.zennioptical.com/?q=593521.

lol hoops are the only non-post earrings I'll wear with glasses!

I have a lot of big crazy earring though that I really love that aren't hoops. Their more complicated and the ones I avoid with glasses.

i like those last ones

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

Their more complicated

"they are"

Yeah, I like the last ones best out of all those too.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

I don't care as much which other glasses you choose as long as I can veto #1?

Although I like 2 and 4. :)

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

Damn, everybody hates those first ones, huh?

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

I like the shape but not the scrolly stuff on the sides.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

Jenny, you are so cool, and those first glasses just don't seem (to me) to be even in your ballpark of coolness.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

lol i was gonna say - those first ones are exactly the style my mum would wear, and i think jenny is significantly cooler than my mum

just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

i have been getting sick of the mechanics of glasses also i am lol vain so i am thinking of switching to contacts, but i am scared. i don't know if i can touch my eyeballs every day.

otm but i have been saying this for about 10 yrs

goole, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

i like 1&2 for you, jenny, but i am uncool. :)

JuliaA, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

Jenny, having ordered a few wire framed Zenni glasses like that, I've a hunch that 464921 will be very, very thin and even kind of flexible. I was a bit disappointed when I received my own wire ones because the were so light and IMO not very attractive. My two cents!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

Good to know!

I think I will probably go to stores and try on some styles and get a better idea of what I might like before I buy anything. I just don't feel confident about any of those glasses.

I put this in another thread, but because I'm so excited: I ordered these yesterday!
