A+ feline audience in Jenny's picture

StanM, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

Ha thanks! That's my cat BFF. She's still with me although she's older hell now (that picture is about 10 years old).

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

i never knew your hair was so short!

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

Btw I just GISd "zoe ball" choppy hair to find a pic (unsuccessful) and pics of Abbott came up!

haha holy shit! with short hair and a shiner no less!

Y'all are very nice btw. I am trying a new salon, just bcz it is called
XANADU
I should probably not dare to go but maybe they will make my hair look like a dream that came through a million years.

if there is singing and dancing at this salon, i will be impressed

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

hopefully choreographed by the always baffling Kenny Ortega

also, there's a hair salon in Toronto called Grateful Head. They served me a glass of wine when I went. <3

lol it does? What did you put in? When I do it I see Abbott and LaLech but not me. haha, too funny

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

I have high hopes for Xanadu the Salon.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

wait what? who is zoe ball? why does my picture come up?

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

Zoe ball is an english radio/tv personality who used to be married to norman cook aka fat boy slim. I don't know why you and abbott are coming up with GISing her hair but both pics are from the girls short hair thread from here.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

agh
bad

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, lol. It didn't when I tried. Weird! esp since that's not a link from ilx? idk. Man, I loved that hair for approx 2 weeks until it started getting bushy and not lying flat etc.

I think I want to dye mine red tbh. The upkeep is too much though and blonde roots on red hair is NAGL. I NEED CHANGE.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I think some girl might have added your hair pic to a folder for inspiration? Look at that URL!

Red hair is AGL always! But yes, the roots bring the sad.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

I've had various shades of red over the years but not in a long long time. I'd probably want to do Lohan brownish red before she turned into one big NAGL but I'd be too nervous to do it myself and salon color is $$$. That said, single process color is a lot cheaper than highlights, right? Maybe I could do it afterall. Hmmmmm.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

i used to dye my hair a bright copper red at home and it always looked super awesome for about 2 weeks, then like shit for another 4 until i did it again. there's a point where the hair just won't hold the dye anymore.

fun for a while though, and made me feel good.

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

erica, what's the longest you've managed to go only washing your hair every couple of days? i have the same as you - fine, lots of it - and started washing my hair just 3-4 times a week a few months ago. the first couple weeks are HARD - my hair looked so gross - but bc i work by myself (no one had to see my grossness) i was able to persevere and it's totally fine on day 2 now. your hair does get used to it, although it might be harder to do this with short hair? anyway, my hair is so so so much more manageable now, less frizzy on the no-wash days, and OMG i love not having to spend 25 mins or more washing, conditioning and drying my hair every morning.

i bought some tresemme dry shampoo for the first time - it does help a little, although it seemed to me that the effect actually came through later in the day: it didn't seem improved at all when i first applied it, but when i got home from work i noticed my hair looked washed and had a lot more body in the crown than normal. also, i read somewhere that a good thing to do is apply the dry shampoo directly after you've washed/dried/styled it, then reapply the following day.

just1n3, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

My colour lasts about 6 weeks at ends and 8 weeks at roots - yay Elumen! Just cut off all the formerly bleached hair so hoping I can do 8 weeks all over - my only issue are the roots. But I get mine done professionally now, just couldn't hack it the other way anymore.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

Uh, honestly? One day. I've only ever skipped one day and by the end of that day I'm dying to wash it. I think I could get behind trying out what you're talking about if it were long enough for me to put up on the no wash days but it's not. Maybe I'll give it another try but idk if I'll be able to, sadly :(

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

no, i totally understand - i mean, i only started doing it this year because i couldn't stand even half a day of unwashed hair. i think not being a heavy smoker anymore also helped (no smokey hair). i only get itchy-head on day 3 of not washing now.

maybe winter is a good time to try this, if you have cute hats you can wear indoors to work?

just1n3, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

Dry shampoo does take a bit because it's blotting up the oil...it doesn't happen immediately unless you really work it into the part/scalp w your fingertips. If you just sprinkle it on and let it sit there, yeah, it's gonna need time.

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

I usually use baby powder for this -- is dry shampoo different/better in some way?

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

I've never bought any b/c cornstarch works okay for me but I as I understand it, you can get dry shampoo in tints? So it blends better on dark hair.

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

ENBB, when my hair was about your length (chin length, right?), I couldn't stand not washing it. That was a weird length for me, plus I would break out where the ends of my hair touched my face.

Shorter I can wash once a week because my hair is so fluffy when it's clean that it takes a few days to get grimy and look normal. Longer I usually do 2-3 times, depending on what I've got going on in my life. Pro tip - I wash my bangs every day.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

So, asked my stylist to change up the colour so it would last longer, and she reminded me it was semi-permanent. Haha. So, I was happy to switch to permanent and she used exactly the same colours, which I really like. She said they would last longer and be 'slightly richer'.

But the permanent version came out pretty different and looks orange-y to me. Probably only seems like a huge difference to me, and no-one else, but, you know, hair paranoia. It was too late in the evening to do anything about it but she suggested she could re-do the roots slightly darker (since they're where the light bounces off and it looks orange) if I really hate it in a couple of days. In a couple of days I'll be travelling for 10 days. I could juuuust about fit in another salon visit tomorrow but it would be v inconvenient.

Is it acceptable to get the roots darkened after 2 weeks when I get back? And regardless of when I go, should expect her to do the root colour for free? I paid for highlights which you really can't see with this base colour, so I kind of feel like I should get the correction free, but don't want to come across entitled - I guess the first time a stylist tries a permanent version of a colour on a client, s/he doesn't know how it will go exactly.

ljubljana, Thursday, 13 October 2011 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

I really like the stylist and always love the cut.

ljubljana, Thursday, 13 October 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

this probably happened because most semi-perms are deposit only, while permanent colors lift a bit and then deposit color.

i think, and this is after years of not asking for something to be changed and then regretting it, that you paid good money to have this done and your hair should look as you requested it, not orangey. she should fix it for free. if she's been dying hair even a short time, she should be able to tell what a perm color will do.

tehresa, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

esp if she knows your hair!

tehresa, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah :-( I'm like you and really hate requesting changes. I'm a bit happier with it this morning and am going to have real trouble getting to the salon today so I will probably live with it for two weeks (lol - this has to be the ultimate first world problem - 'my hair is infinitesimally more orange than I would like, I will have to *live with it*). Then I'll decide whether to go back.

It may be that when she said 'it will be richer' she was telling me it would be lighter and I should have said then 'how different will be colour be?' and got clarification.

ljubljana, Thursday, 13 October 2011 12:32 (fourteen years ago)

Live and learn. I think it's reasonable to ask if she'll fix it for free. Just have a contingency plan in place if she won't (so agree to pay, or say that you'll just wait until you're due for a cut and color anyway).

I'm glad the short-term color problem was easy to address, however!

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Thursday, 13 October 2011 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

Perhaps you could call her and tell her that you're not currently satisfied but you have to go away and you'd like to "take her up on her offer" when you return? That would be my mode of attack - I hate asking for things too, but better to have it known in advance!

I let my stylist cut my hair finally after growing it for 2 years, and it feels so short. Hits my shoulder if I pull on it, but the ends curl up so it hovers mid-neck. It was past my armpits! But all the hair I bleached in my DIY days is now gone, so my colour should last longer. But I want my long hair back :(

okay guys so its time for the next hair experiement: Im going to try giving myself hair extensions. Ive ordered enough 24" strands of real human blonde hair from europe. enough to cover my head. now here is the experimental part. Im def not gluing. Im def not sewing. im going to try these teeny tiny bead things that you squish flat with a special hair extension bead squishing plier like thingy. This way I can wash it (did you know peeps who get bonded/glued extensions CANT WASH THEIR HAIR(!!!)), its human hair so I can dye it, its not clip on so I can swim with it etc etc. Oh also, can keep hair forevs and my own hair happily keeps on growing because it hasnt been damaged by heat/glue etc

If this doesnt work im going to try v v thin light copper wire from.....home depot??

If that doesnt work im going to invent something and become the richest woman in the southwest united states of america

I just got back from a dream attack (sunny successor), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

oh shit ive got to show you a gluing extension disaster pic

I just got back from a dream attack (sunny successor), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

Holy shit, you are the bravest person I know. This sounds very complicated.

It seems time intensive because its strand by strand but if ive got a mirror in back, in front and maybe on the side I should be fine xp

I just got back from a dream attack (sunny successor), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Wait wait I'm still back at the part where you're going to use...crimp beads?

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

im going to try them. if theyre too obvious them it on to wire

I just got back from a dream attack (sunny successor), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:47 (fourteen years ago)

them it = then its

I just got back from a dream attack (sunny successor), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:47 (fourteen years ago)

Well it's not the worst idea I've ever heard! And if they fall out, you can just pry them off or cut that tiny bit out of the crimp and reinsert them 1/16" shorter with a new bead, presumably?

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

well heres the golden part - the pliers come with a tool for bead removal

I just got back from a dream attack (sunny successor), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

Brill!! You're in.

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

How much of your own hair do you put through the bead? Like...half a dozen hairs in each? And how long are these supposed to stay in before the outgrowth is problematic?

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

You clip the bead into your existing hair? As it grows out, how do you prevent the hair above the beads from dreading?

xp HUH Laurel and I are sharing a brain today.

That hair extension pic is a nightmare.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

I struggle to even blow-dry the back of my head properly so there's no way I could do this but I'm really interested in how it turns out!

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

something about this scenario reminds me of that scene from affliction where nick nolte performs his own dental work and i can't help but worry
are you sure this is a good idea?

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

Here is a photo of the tool sans hair. The 'beads' are actually some kind of plastic that is soft and squishable with your fingers but once squished with the pliers seem to stay that way. Also, you add them right at the scalp so no dreading. Most people need to touch up every 3 months but since my lame hair grows like 1.5 inches a year I might be able to stretch it out a little longer.

Also note the bead ive used the pliers on is thin enough that i cant stand it on its side

I put the penny in for perspective.
