I get it Abbs -- no need to fly the freak flag on yr head when it will unfurl soon enough. Teaching requires a uniform sometimes, at least at the beginning.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 15:44 (fourteen years ago)
anyway, i wear a little scarf over my hair and under the helmet, and it prevents most creases. a little muss after removing the helmet solves most problems, and i think we have similar hair (straight, fine) also with this method you get to muss your hair, which feels good each and every time.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i understand the concerns about how you look when you're teaching--when i was student teaching last year i wore the dowdiest clothes i could find that were work-appropriate because i was anxious about having too much look. i was more just "nun" rather than "stark arty nun," which sounds kind of cool. but about the shape of your face + short, short hair. i was similarly anxious about getting short hair a while back for that reason, but i have to say, even though i was not entirely happy with the cut, it wasn't because my face looked like a potato with it or anything. i think that kind of thing is hard to predict and the round face=no short hair rule is not borne out. also i agree with Laurel that you would look adorable with any haircut.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah me too! Plus I'm sure I've seen some pics of you with short hair and thought it looked great. My round face is one of the reasons I didn't love my hair super short though so, while I still think it would look cute, I can understand that fear.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)
i feel like the conventional wisdom about supershort hair on women is that only if you look like audrey hepburn, i.e. are gamine, can you pull it off and that annoys me and i have known many women who looked great with short hair who do not fit that description.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)
That annoys me too because "gamine" translates to "thin and extremely small-boned" and really who wants to be a fragile fragile princess? I want to cut all my hair off so I can be more practical and sea-worthy! Harrumph.
― WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)
i don't look anything like audrey hepburn but i am fairly small/petite and i did NOT like short hair on me. just depends on the person for sure. laurel why don't you chop off your hair and then i can make a wig out of it. for myself.
but seriously, my scarf + helmet trick works, try it
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)
i feel like you could be characterized as gamine, Amanda, but you look way better than audrey hepburn.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)
i guess to me, being small doesn't translate to being delicate/fragilei feel like a firecracker most of the timeand i want big hair, dammit
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)
Oh god, sorry, that was put horribly, OF COURSE YOU ARE NOT A FRAGILE PRINCESS but like the "50 beauty secrets" advice that you should have a little face with high cheekbones and a pointy chin and no subcutaneous fat compartments, that's what I reject.
Lech, it would be more for special occasions b/c of the amt of work involved, but have you tried dry shampoo? If you let your hair go for 2-3 days w/o washing and then you powder it at the roots, and THEN you set it in big rollers with setting lotion and style it from there, you might be surprised?!
― WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)
I wish dry shampoo worked for me. I have fine hair but tons of it and if I don't wash it everyday it gets weighed down and looks weird. Dry shampoo helps some but not enough.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:39 (fourteen years ago)
my hair isn't really long enough for rollers, but i do that with a curling iron sometimes

no harm done btw -- i know you recognize my power

i like the front part, the combover in the back not so much. my hair was kinda like that with the long wispy parts when i first got it cut short.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)
I like them both and the one on the left is sorta neat but I feel like it would take a lot of work to get it to look like that irl.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)
The thing is nothing in the back is gonna STAY like that so I'm not sure what the point is. It's kinda comic book hair. But I like it.

Yeah! I feel like the fist time I got mine all cut off it was sort of similar but then I switched ladies and the others didn't know how to cut short hair that softly and it ended up being much tougher and, well, sorta butch for my liking. I think being able to cut short hair that femininely is a special skill.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)
Well, at that length, my hair would stand up straight and stick in all directions. You have to have that fine baby hair for it to gracefully hug your head like that!

― WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)
Where short haircuts are concerned, people without necks really get left out of the conversation.
― WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)
that's pretty much exactly what my hair looked like when i had it super short (it's flat as the tires of my neighbor's bike) and it was fun for like a monththen i felt depressed
and i have a neck. i can't imagine how people without necks feel.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 18:17 (fourteen years ago)
I've had p short hair with a fat face and p short hair with an angular pointy face and I like my fat faced short hair better (but that may be bias re knowing what was going on inside my brain during the angular, pointy chin era).
I think it's worth trying at least once. I've been thinking about cutting my hair short again mostly because I get so annoyed by it when it's long (as it is now).
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)
jenny you should grow it out long like super longi don't really get it when people who COULD have long glorious hair choose to have high maintenance short hair insteadshort hair is MORE work!

― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)
I just hate the way long hair looks on me tbh. I haven't had it past my shoulders since HS because when it starts to get below my chin I feel weird.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)
Short hair is low maintenance for me. I wash it once or twice/week and that's about it. Although long hair is p much the same, except I brush and comb it more (as in ever) and sometimes I put it up or stick things in it.
I actually bought a hair clip from Sephora today that is working out really well. It's low profile but holds a lot of hair, although it's been so long since I've had hair long enough to use one that it took me about ten tries to get it right.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)
I kind of like the choppiness of the pic on the right above along with the little wisps of softer hair around the face, though it's way too textured in the pic. Used to have my hair short 10-12 years ago and have been pining for that a bit, but I think my face has sagged since then which may not work out so well...
Abbott, I have seen some great WDYLLs of you with short hair that were sassy and beautiful.

This is the best fat/short hair picture I could find. This is VERY OLD DO NOT JUDGE ME FOR MY FASHION CHOICES. I post this just to show that it can be done.

About 10+ years ago I got my hair cut in a choppy style with slightly longer bits at the front. Very hard to get right esp when I didn't really know what I wanted. When I came out my friend told me I looked like Zoe Ball which at the time was NOT the look I was going for :(Btw I just GISd "zoe ball" choppy hair to find a pic (unsuccessful) and pics of Abbott came up!
