Oh yeah, if you feel nauseated then those are not right. The crazy frames I bought over the summer that made me feel a little weird? Turns I mis-entered the PD and it was off by 1.5 mm. That little bit was enough to make them hard to wear.
You should get your PD measurement from your eye doctor and see if it's the same as the look-in-the-box measurement.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i gotta see if the lc lady put it on my receipt for the glasses... i called my eye doc a while back and they said they don't have that measurement, i'd have to get it from an optician.
― tehresa, Friday, 7 October 2011 00:27 (fourteen years ago)
oh and i sent the other glasses back.
Those eye docs hold those pd's with a tight fist sometimes too!
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 7 October 2011 00:30 (fourteen years ago)
I know! My eye doc was really reluctant to give me mine, and when she did, she gave me a stern warning about internet glasses. Then when I came back to pick up my sunglasses (that I spent plenty on, so it's not like I'm taking advantage of my poor eye doc) the optician raved about my new glasses until I asked her to adjust them because I had ordered them on line. Then she got very grim and told me she could adjust them, but they would probably break, etc. etc. Phooey.
Although I do get nervous having only one pair of glasses in my current Rx. What if I break them or lose them or I am looking down over over a railing and they fall off my face and into the river or a pigeon steals them??????
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)
I think I love these?

I like them a lot.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)
But do I love them?
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)
For $38 I think you probably do.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:53 (fourteen years ago)
Thank you.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)
Hey jenny, what is the actual frame width on those winged math symbol specs you got? I love them but I think the only way I could pull them off is as sunglasses.
― just1n3, Friday, 7 October 2011 18:17 (fourteen years ago)
(I ask because their measurements don't seem accurate online)
― just1n3, Friday, 7 October 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)
Derek Cardigan 7005. Coastal Contacts gives the frame width as (lens width x 2)+bridge measurement* without taking the actual frames into account. So that frame width only works if there are two lenses hovering the bridge-width apart in front of your face.
*I can do that because of the math symbols on my glasses, FYI.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)
Oh Jesus you asked for the actual width not the frame number. Sorry! I'll have to check when I get home but they are pretty wide. I've got a fat face and they look big on me.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 18:29 (fourteen years ago)
jenny, get those glasses!
― tehresa, Friday, 7 October 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)
justine, the frames are about ~136.5 mm wide. I measured them with the ruler on the spine of the most recent Ikea catalog so that is just an estimate.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Saturday, 8 October 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)
cool, that's good to know - i need frames that are no more than 130mm wide.
― just1n3, Saturday, 8 October 2011 02:20 (fourteen years ago)
Fell trap to some new glasses site - Firmoo? - when FB ad said they had a free pair special. They were $8 glasses with $13 shipping, hell, I'll pay $13 shipping to get a cheap pair of trendy glasses! Picked out a tortoiseshell frame, will report back once received. /addict

First of all, hello Coastal. I don't know if I'm being targeted specifically because I'm logged into Facebook and gmail right now, or if Coastal just went apeshit with their banner ad budget. Either way, gives me another place to look around.
I can't decide on what kind of frames, if any, I should get. My current go-to glasses for public display are rimless, but the more I look at it, they make me seem like I'm wearing a metal nasal strip all evening.
http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt203/pplains/11-10.jpg
I don't want to go too thin on the height or I'll look like I should be wearing a skinny tie and suspenders, but I don't want to go too tall either.
Honestly, I don't mind the look SM is rocking here. However, those are the same kind of glasses worn by George Bush Sr., Jim Wright and the BTK Killer.

Gotta be something else in between. What do you think?
― Pleasant Plains, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)
OMFG I got my glasses back from 39dollarglasses.com, the ones I sent to be relensed, and they TOTALLY FUCKED THEM UP. They melted the holy fuck out of the frames, fucked up the metal inlays, bent them so that they are convex (so bent away from my face at the nose piece) and to top it all off... put the wrong prescription in them! I am like MADE OF RAGE right now. And their offices are closed, which means I get to let this rage simmer overnight and reduce to a thick concentrate for the delightful phone call I get to make tomorrow morning.

opinions?

#4, emphatically.
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)
I like the 2nd!
― bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:50 (fourteen years ago)
4 or 3
― caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:50 (fourteen years ago)
I think I used to have the 2nd pair myself, they look exactly like the ones broke in Nov. I just think the squarer shape of the last pair is more current.
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)
Ha, I like 2 and 3. We are not helpful on the aggregate.
Also, Julia you are super cute.

I'm getting somewarbyparker frames in the mail to try on this week, too. The last picture is from there, but I'm afraid that they're too angular for my face.
I really wish warbyparker had smaller frames–I look really silly in larger frames, IMO.
Ex post–thanks Jenny. I had to roll my eyes and smirk in order to take a picture that didn't look like a mug shot.
Much as opinions might be varied, they're really helpful. thanks!
― JuliaA, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
2 or 4, def NOT 1
― just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)
#4, but I think eye position might make some of the others look different than they would normally
― mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:15 (fourteen years ago)
IMO, #1's frames are too thin, and the bridge in #3 is too thick. I'm more into slightly squared than curved, so the winner is 4!
I'm opinionated because I've probably ordered 4-5 variations on the black frames I finally found A Happy Place with, haha!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
i like 2 and 4 too!
i have no idea how anyone can buy frames online, i have discovered today - how do you really know they will fit the contours of your face??
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:04 (fourteen years ago)
i am srsly thinking about lasering eyes before summer
why is it that everyone doesn't get their eyes lasered?
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:05 (fourteen years ago)
doesn't work if you're long-sighted, old or young iirc
― caek, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)
I'd bought several pairs of glasses in stores prior to shopping online, so I stuck to designs I knew would suit me, in lengths that matched my current glasses :) I have ordered a few misses, but I have rarely paid more than $30 a pair online, so I can afford 2-3 misses for every win, considering in-store always cost me $150+.. (my dog chewed my expensive glasses just as easily as he could chew a cheap pair!)
I don't want eye surgery, well maybe I do, but I would still wear glasses because I have mega dark circles under my eyes and the glasses are a perfect fix for that!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)
Reasons I don't contemplate lasik:
1. Expensive2. Not covered by insurance3. Doesn't treat astigmatism, which I have in both eyes
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)
iirc it only lasts a few years?
― just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)
xp I thought it lasted longer. Laurel's #1 is my reason. Also, fear they'd screw it up.
http://mediacdn.zennioptical.com/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/255x102/3b61aaa59667ba46a41804bac5f380ed/2/2/2217-15_2011-8-12_.jpg
These are a bit like 3, and a lot like my current frames, but I like these too.
xp Robyn, I'm paying obsessive detail to measurements, but I'm new to all of this. I'm getting some frames in the mail in a couple of days to try on, but I hate trying on frames–I don't have contacts, so it's not like I can see them very well when I try them on in person! So I'll take pictures and see what I think.
I wish my vision were better so they would be cheaper, but $60-130 is worlds better than the $400 I paid for my last pair.
― JuliaA, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)
yah i have about a dozen pairs now, of which i really only wear 2 pairs on the reg, but the total cost was maybe a 150? the last irl pair i bought - even with a heavy discount bc my mum works for an optometrist - were a couple hundred.
― just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:29 (fourteen years ago)
#4
I have a question. Do any of you get bothered by the mechanics of wearing glasses? I mean, I love mine and the way I look in glasses in general but rarely wear them because I hate when they slide down my nose, or get spots on the lenses, or fog up, or when I can't lay on my side while watching tv etc. I just find wearing them annoying and find I reach for my contacts nearly every day as a result.
― ☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:32 (fourteen years ago)
I guess wearing them more often is the only way to get over it. I also hate having to switch between reg and RX sunglasses when going in and outdoors.
I hate the mechanics of wearing contacts even more
― bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
I haven't had glasses I was willing to wear outside my house in about two months, and I tell you, I'm missing the mechanics of glasses more. My eyes need a break! Also, glasses are protection from wind (esp on bike) that dries out my eyes, and protection from hair or dust or specs of dirt getting into them.
Also they are "stick on face, leave house" instead of "go to bathroom, wash hands, open container, rinse/rub lenses, put finger on eyeball, reverse all steps."
― It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)
Hmmm. Yeah I'm pretty careless with my contacts. I have dalies but sometimes sleep in them if I foget to take them out. I can also put them in/take them out without looking in the mirror so it's pretty simple. I guess I just tolerate them well? That said, at one point I did wear them so much that my eyes grew blood vessels where they're not supposed to but, uh, I think that's cleared up now.
― ☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)
i've had specs since i was 13 so i'm just used to all that stuff - REALLY wanted contacts when i was younger, but tbh i'm like lexy and have huge dark circles which glasses hide well.
― just1n3, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah. Circles are my major face hate and one of the best things about wearing glasses when I choose to do so is that they're a lot less noticeable.
