sorry to bring up something old but i am confused because has kate ever posted on ils and was that an issue? i don't recall there every being any style-kate conflict. weird. i don't know if this is explored elsewhere but hmmm.

tehresa, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure she hasn't, she has just decided that we're gross and frivolous and not feminist enough bc we talk about hair and makeup etc.

for someone who is always blaming every rxn to her on sexism, she sure seems to hate women a lot.

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

I think she posted on my poll about how to go about quitting the haircolor, but I don't remember animosity from any quarter.

Jaq, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i thought it was 'funny' that she singled out this 'gang' since the ILS women (apart from me, i can't fucking stand her) have been nothing but openly supportive of her.

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not a fan either but i don't directly interact with her so idgi.

I actually love that masonic boom is still finding something to bitch about on ILX.

Yerac, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

Many xps: damn, I'm from Toronto, I'm not even sure which states are Midwest. :P I can't stand her, so I love it when she self-bans. She needs serious mental help.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

And to bring the frivolous talk back - pantyhose! I keep all my hairbrush hair & stick in pantyhose toes. Makes what ladies used to call a "hair rat," a very useful bump.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

You know I've been on ILX maybe six years now and all I've heard from Kate is poor character judgement, bitching and whining all the while blaming it on carrot cake. She needs to permaban herself for good for her own sake. Maybe she'll have some time to think about how it isn't the 90s anymore and she isn't a cute chick in a touring band anymore and to let it the fuck go.

Seems to me most of us on ILS are asking for help which I think by default ruins any chance of being uppity.

And that midwesterner comment did seem squarely aimed at Laurel and only comes off as jealousy that she's wallowing in her own shit while Laurel is out there making her life fun and beautiful.

Also the SSRI comment from someone who could be the before poster for zoloft? Cmon.

Serial Chiller (sunny successor), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 05:33 (fourteen years ago)

and just ftr, laurel's hair is absolutely gorgeous and her updo skillz are quite amaazing.

tehresa, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

Blaming it on carrot cake - hahaha! I love that expression.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 12:22 (fourteen years ago)

Last night I actually read the thread that gave rise to her off-board comments and while I think there was a point to be made originally re: the display name callout (and some comments in response had some unexamined privilege issues), I am far less sympathetic to Kate now. I mean, explicitly bullying ENBB and then creating this weird midwestern strawwoman as an off-board response to perceived sexism is just gross on so many levels. And if the SSRI-addled hair-and-makeup bitches comment was for Laurel, who was entirely uninvolved in the underlying thread, I just don't even.

So, I guess if you're reading threads where you might get a mention, Kate, you've alienated an ally with your boorish behavior.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, sunny otm: when i first started posting here in 2007 i remember feeling really sorry for k8 because it seemed like she was being picked on, and i even remember coming to her defense a couple of times. but then i started to notice that she would take any little thing and turn it into this personal sexist attack on her. but worse than that, i noticed that many times when someone would try to be supportive or communicative with her, she would attack them too. ppl with a martyr complex just can't be dealt with effectively and are better off being ignored.

re hair: i bought the giovanni shampoo tza uses and i'm wondering if it's the same as the trader joe's tea tree oil shampoo, just with their rebranding??

just1n3, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

started writing an email to jenny and then part of it was

>dunno why i want the link because i'm sure it's more of the same that's been going on for 10 yrs

sooo maybe i don't want the link after all. kate hates everyone at some time or another. unless they don't post much. (hello!)

justine, i heard that the tt oil shampoos were the same, iirc.

i just found a photo album that's all lol college and i frequently had the same hairstyle as now. (or lack thereof, really.) at least i lost the 90s clothes and dark lipstick.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

If someone could point me in the direction of that thread id be grateful

Serial Chiller (sunny successor), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

It's the Unfinest of Display Names thread. Ctrl-f "vagina."

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't used giovanni in ages because I've been cheap but my two newest favorite bargain hair products are the tj's nourish shampoo amd whole foods' herbal mint conditioner (the shampoo is also great, but not as minty/clarifying as tj's tea tree oil)

tehresa, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

xp (urge to change my dn to "ctrl-f vagina" now.)

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

ATTENTION: I'm doing the hairband roll thing! I have to wear a flowered wreath/circlet thing tomorrow, which calls for curls. Put it up dry, gonna sleep on the thing and see how it goes.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Saturday, 10 September 2011 04:28 (fourteen years ago)

How did it go Laurel?

My salon hair colour fades really fast these days. I use 'colour-friendly' shampoo and it's still fading after only six weeks - bits of grey poking out everywhere, not just roots. What can I do to minimize this?

ljubljana, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

Hm the next day was too humid. My hair kept a tiny bit of wave but mostly it was all gone within a couple of hours. I probably curled it too loosely, also. Didn't pull the loops tight against the headband. Will do next time.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

Might work better if you start with damp hair, too.

ljubljana - my color fades really fast, too. My stylist's solution is to go darker so it at least fades to something attractive.

Standard color fade avoidance techniques include not washing your hair every day, staying out of direct sunlight, avoiding pools (or wearing a cap). I usually don't wash my hair for a couple of days after the original coloring, although I have no idea of that helps.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

And maybe you need a different brand of dye? I'm guessing it's like anything else - different formulas work better for different people.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

No pool for me, but I do wash my hair every other day - have tried to reduce, but then I feel like a greaseball. Yes, next time I go in I'll ask about brands. I love the colour she uses now so would be a shame to switch, but needs must. It doesn't so much fade to a lighter colour uniformly as just disappear altogether from certain random strands, leaving them flat out grey!

ljubljana, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

i'm thinking of doing something with color, maybe highlights in the front?
no idea, have never done anything but all over bottle color

some lady (La Lechera), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

Highlights can do wonders for a person. I tend not to like flat one color hair. Not talking just blonde highlights but like lighter brown or red ones - whatever just something to break it up a bit.

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

that's what i need -- was thinking bright gold/orange/red burst around the face and top to make me look less like a corpse

some lady (La Lechera), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

Are you going to DIY or go to a salon?

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

prob salon -- i want it to look good!

some lady (La Lechera), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

Oooo if you don't have a salon in mind I highly recommend where I go and my specific stylist.

Meanwhile, talk me out of buying blue clip in hair extensions from etsy.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

link!

JuliaA, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

That's not talking me out if it, Julia...

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

greys don't hold color as well - they tend to be a bit more porous iirc.

tehresa, Thursday, 15 September 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

Damn, did not know this but it fits.

ljubljana, Thursday, 15 September 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

the lighter the gray/white hair, the less it seems to hold color. when my mom went white, she tried having her hair dyed at shishi salons, but it always came out beige. rly unnatural-looking.

jenny, don't buy those. they look like the sort of thing that seems incredibly fun and then they just sit in a cabinet unused once u buy them and then buyer's regret etc.

JuliaA, Thursday, 15 September 2011 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

Ew, no, don't buy those things unless it's for Halloween*. They look like fishing line.

*I have worn blue clip-in hair extensions for Halloween before.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

It's not for Halloween. It would be because a friend of mine got blue streaks in her hair and it looked amazing so I asked my stylist and she was like "…" so I thought "Extensions?" but you are both correct and I thank you for your wise counsel.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

I have some lavender clip in hair extensions that I bought from Ulta... they are remy human hair, and I actually love them!

When they are in they blend into my hair really well.

homosexual II, Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

These are the ones I bought

homosexual II, Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

I saw a 40 something year old very matronly looking lady wearing those feather extensions in her hair today. It wasn't good.

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

I think there's a way to wear these things without it looking gauche. When I do wear mine, I usually am wearing all black, and the pop of color is kinda cool. I also put them pretty far back on my head, underneath quite a bit of hair.

homosexual II, Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

The feathers are always horrible, though.

homosexual II, Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

x-post - yes, I could see that working well

The feather things need to die.

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

I am puzzled by the feathers bc I always see fashionable young rich blondes wearing them and "feathers in your hair" seems like a non-mainstream thing.

Those etsy extensions are real hair.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

i hate those feather things!!!

tehresa, Thursday, 15 September 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

i wish my hair would grow faster.

tehresa, Thursday, 15 September 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

Me too.
Also many xps above re highlights: never underestimate the power of lowlights.
Also I'm dying the underneath layer of my hair purple and blue because my daughter wants me to look like this girl for winter http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110825223709/monsterhigh/images/3/39/MonsterHigh-Abbey7.png
