tza will take the purple ones.

it's not that print journalists don't have a sense of humour, it's just (Laurel), Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

will totally set her up

quincie, Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

laurel is right.
my, i have just spent an hour looking at fascinators and i am overwhelmed. sigh.

tehresa, Thursday, 18 August 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

I need to find the right sort of hair band so I can try that no heat retro curls thing

I have tried this, and it works ok! I have wavy/curly hair, though, so I think that helps hold the curl. And I did it with damp hair.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 19 August 2011 02:58 (fourteen years ago)

I have wavy hair that holds curl OK with help from products, so I have high hopes!

quincie, Friday, 19 August 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

I am going to try this tonight I think even though my hair is bob length now. I am predicting it is going to look crazy 80s crimped.

I am on one week of using bar soap shampoo from chagrin valley. I probably should be doing the vinegar rinse after, but that is too much trouble. So far I think I won't go back to regular shampoo.

Yerac, Saturday, 20 August 2011 12:45 (fourteen years ago)

Is there a sewing thread? I want Laurel to talk more about sewing techniques. I am in the middle of trying to decide on a new machine to purchase.

Yerac, Saturday, 20 August 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)

Yerac! Yay! I hope the shampoo works out.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Saturday, 20 August 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)

I've never done a vinegar rinse, btw. I just use the shampoo bars like regular shampoo.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Saturday, 20 August 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

Do you condition after with regular conditioner? I have been doing this. I got like 6 different samples, trying to figure out which ones I like the best.

Yerac, Saturday, 20 August 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

I do. I use cheapo Suave coconut conditioner in the summer because it's light and it works fine, and then I totally offset that cost savings by using some crazy expensive megamoisturizing Bumble and Bumble stuff in the winter because Chicago winters are desiccating. I only wash my hair a couple of times/week, and only condition my hair after I wash it.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Saturday, 20 August 2011 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

Love vinegar rinses!! Best-feeling, softest hair of my life. Takes color out, though, so do not use on dyed hairs. Only use it on the undyed ones.

Yerac, so sorry about being AWOL this weekend. Did you decide on a machine?? I'll start a sewing thread as soon as I come up with a sufficiently punny/kittenish title.

Did not know this about colored hair. Valuable info!!!

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Monday, 22 August 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

I was born with dyed hair.

Yerac, Monday, 22 August 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

I am still stuck between 2 machines. I like having less choices in the functions, but then what happens if I get really into quilting or something and need 192 stitches.

Yerac, Monday, 22 August 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

so, ladies of ILS, i thought you might be interested in knowing exactly what masonic boom/karen d. tregaskin/kate REALLY thinks of you/us:

There's this little GANG of nicey-nice Midwestern women on ILX who talk about haircuts in arch tones, they loathe me*, the feeling is mutual
13 hours ago

You know that awful awful 1950s housewife tone that, like, sites like The Hairpin use? They all talk like that.

They're like those little girls named Beth or Jennifer who made my life hell in 8th grade, but ripped to the tits on SSRIs.

*i'm sure this could be construed as shit-stirring, and in a way i guess i am deliberately doing that, but what got me to me is that the ilx women that she is referencing here have come to her defense on numerous occasions and been nothing but gracious, so i'm hoping those women will think twice before bothering to do so next time.

**for those of you unaware, this is from her twitter account, referenced in a clusterfuck thread. a twitter account which she uses 2 of her ilx handles with, so hardly distancing herself from here.

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

That's too bad. I actually really like Kate and thought I told her as much somewhere on here.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

I have the strangest feeling I resemble those remarks.

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

I mostly resent being misclassified as Midwestern. I live in Chicago now but inside, Mid Atlantic FOREVER.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

Oh Justine. ha. I was wondering if that was going to come up here. I've never even been to the fucking Midwest (although I really want to).

((*)) ((*)) ((*)) (ENBB), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

I actually really like Kate and thought I told her as much somewhere on here.

I've done the same, but maybe that credit expired after 30 days? Clearly this week we are the enemy.

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

I felt sort of bad for a couple minutes earlier this morning when I saw she'd self-banned but that was probably just the nicey-nice side of me because I realized quickly that I have no reason to feel that way. She brought it on herself and it was a cowardly and hypocritical thing to do and I don't regret saying what I did at all.

((*)) ((*)) ((*)) (ENBB), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

Born-in-Indiana here! Go Hoosiers!

quincie, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

OHIO bitchez all the way. JENNIBETH 4 LYFE.

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

I'd comment on the substance of Kate's insults regarding ILS as the popular girls or w/e, since I'm pretty sure many/most of us were equally outcast and bullied and miserable...but I think, in hindsight, that ALL JUNIOR HIGH GIRLS ARE MISERABLE, so I'm not even sure there's any cred there.

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

I refuse to nitpick details when someone calls me an asshole. Whatever, so you think I'm an asshole. Enjoy that.

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I mean I'm sorry she feels that way but I'm on the record as being pro-Kate and if that's not working out for her that's okay. I do hope she feels better about things soon - not like has a change of heart about ILS mean girls but just feels better in general. ILX blowups are unpleasant to be involved in.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

She's never really been my favorite but being called out individually by her on twitter and told to fuck off was the last straw imo. She's awful and that's the last I'll say on the matter.

((*)) ((*)) ((*)) (ENBB), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

in other hair news: my new go-to up-do is high ponytail, hair-coloured sock with toes cut off, spread hair over and kind of pouf it out, secure second hair-tie over it (tucking in as many of the ends as possible) then pinning resulting bun down a little bit.

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

Clever!

In an act of desperation, I got my hair cut at a chain store in a mall in Florida last week and it turned out awesome. Who knew?

((*)) ((*)) ((*)) (ENBB), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

I am having a hard time visualizing Justine's updo! Then again, I am stupid with updos, though I really should figure some out given that I have longish hair these days.

quincie, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

Sock? What?

ENBB come visit Chicago. I've got a $5 off coupon for the Supercuts in my building I'll give you if you do.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

ha i should have just posted the youtube vid(s) that inspired it! hang on, i will try to find them

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:19 (fourteen years ago)

I think she means she's sort of using the sock as one might use a Bump-it like to make the bun bigger and fuller and give it more shape? I don't think you would see the sock once the 'do was done.

((*)) ((*)) ((*)) (ENBB), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:19 (fourteen years ago)

interesting!
i can't wait until my hair is long again. it's getting there! i am a slave to my hair dryer though, i realize, again and again, but especially on saturday, when i just let my hair air dry and it was all curly and nice for an hour and slowly but surely became a frizzed out mess as the day went on and into the night. hairclips and bobbypins thank u 4 being a friend.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

Hahahaha omg supercuts. When I first lived on my own I used to get my hair cut there because it was the only place I could afford. I think I'd be a little scared now. This place was a couple steps up from SC, I think. Still surprising but it was just too long and big and I couldn't handle it anymore.

((*)) ((*)) ((*)) (ENBB), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

I do want to visit Chicago though!

((*)) ((*)) ((*)) (ENBB), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

it's a cross between this

and this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I13J7ArHTkM&feature=relmfu

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

my hair is too layered/short for the sock bun to really work (i can't tuck it in) but i realised that the sock worked great as a sort of hairpiece to give more volume/shape to a bun (instead of the big hairy thing the first vid uses). plus it's a good use of unpaired socks.

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

sorry to bring up something old but i am confused because has kate ever posted on ils and was that an issue? i don't recall there every being any style-kate conflict. weird. i don't know if this is explored elsewhere but hmmm.

tehresa, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure she hasn't, she has just decided that we're gross and frivolous and not feminist enough bc we talk about hair and makeup etc.

for someone who is always blaming every rxn to her on sexism, she sure seems to hate women a lot.

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

I think she posted on my poll about how to go about quitting the haircolor, but I don't remember animosity from any quarter.

Jaq, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i thought it was 'funny' that she singled out this 'gang' since the ILS women (apart from me, i can't fucking stand her) have been nothing but openly supportive of her.

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not a fan either but i don't directly interact with her so idgi.

tehresa, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

I actually love that masonic boom is still finding something to bitch about on ILX.

Yerac, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

Many xps: damn, I'm from Toronto, I'm not even sure which states are Midwest. :P I can't stand her, so I love it when she self-bans. She needs serious mental help.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

And to bring the frivolous talk back - pantyhose! I keep all my hairbrush hair & stick in pantyhose toes. Makes what ladies used to call a "hair rat," a very useful bump.
