This entire site should be cross-referenced with that "hair styles for Mormons" thread, wherever it went.

some of those braids look like fish-like mammals!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

I learned those funny braids at summer (church) camp one year, but they were called "fishtail braids" so you are otm!

I like this hairstyle, too! It looks really intricate from the back.

I'm on a hunt for long hair updos for Mandee, in case you were wondering.

xp Thanx, hs!

oh god what if you all braid yourselves up into becoming ILX sister-wives

lets make this happen

Only if you marry us all.

I'm just not very good at doing hair, including braids. I need an easy style :(

homosexual II, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

I also have the kind of hair that never seems to be teased/back-combed properly

homosexual II, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

I thought that about mine too? But when I let it get kinda dirty, like day 2 or 3 after wash, and add in hairspray...amazingly, it does tease.

has someone posted this site for long hair styles? http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/

(laurel, you have amazing hairstyling skillz, and you look great)

JuliaA, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

You have to recite the bible verses after you finish the hairstyles so the Lord helps keep your hair in place and bouncy, but never stiff or sticky.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

That rapunzel page is GREAT! The thing about all those long-hair old-fashioned styles, though, is that they mostly all start with pulling your hair straight back from your face into something, and I don't like the way my face looks when I do that. One hallmark of professional-level updos, I find, is securing bits that show from the front at some place HIGHER than the back, so that they add height or volume or some shape to the top and sides of head. It's tricky, but I think the difference is worth it.

Probably not such a thing if you have bangs or layered bits in front, those would soften things up automatically.

Laurel. I know everyone has already said it, but wow.

ljubljana, Thursday, 4 August 2011 12:57 (fourteen years ago)

The Rapunzel site is actually great! Those are perfect for my long-ass Mormon hair. I just did one of her Edwardian buns or whatever today, and it worked great!

homosexual II, Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

this is... genius!

I have to tell you, I watched that from my hotel bed at 2am and was astounded.

think i might by a stretchy headband today and try it out!

just1n3, Saturday, 6 August 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

buy, even!

just1n3, Saturday, 6 August 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

hair is up in this thing right now. will report back if successful!*

*should be noted that - like everything i do - i kind of half-assed it, so it may be disappointing.

just1n3, Saturday, 6 August 2011 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

That is freaking awesome!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 6 August 2011 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

I'm going to give it a try, too, assuming my headband like that is not too tight and I can roll it up and get away with wearing it out in public.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Saturday, 6 August 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

OK so on curling and updos - I sorta tried both and it didn't really end up as planned. What I did get was a kinda messy wavy half up thing that I sorta think looks OK? I'm basically just dying to find something that can keep my heavy-ass hair out of my face on hot summer days. I think maybe I could work this?

Maybe I'll get better at the whole curling thing with practice. It's tricky!!!

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Sunday, 7 August 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

i forgot to report: that hair thing kind of worked.

i only left it in for a few hours, so it was more wavy and less curly, and it fell out within a couple of hours. i think if i ~slightly~ dampened my hair, added some product and left it in overnight it might work better, but my hair really doesn't hold a curl v well.

just1n3, Sunday, 7 August 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

That looks pretty, E!

The band thing worked but looked funky on me. I've got layers so it was a little too curly in the front and the back fell out in the night. It ended up looking like that early 80s perm fad where the top was straight and the sides were curly, like poodle ears.

I'm definitely searching for a new up do that works with my hair and my laziness and isn't a half assed pony tail.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Sunday, 7 August 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

omg youtube vid headband woman and i have pretty much the same type of hair! i am amazed by this technique and am trying it asap even though my hair is on the shorter side right now (but growing out nicely!)
wow. and how to brush curls around your hand was a good tip too!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 8 August 2011 12:52 (fourteen years ago)

I did it. I chopped off my hair. Or at least a lot of it. Enjoying the new look, it's much like I've had in the past with a good amount of length up top but a bit longer on the back and sides so it blends well.

jackie tretorn (elmo argonaut), Monday, 8 August 2011 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

I liked having long hair but I could not deal with having it all on my neck in this heat and I don't think I'm suited to a ponytail. I'm mobile but let me see if I can get a picture up...

jackie tretorn (elmo argonaut), Monday, 8 August 2011 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

that sounds like a good hair change!

really glad you did not take yr hair into ponytail territory

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 8 August 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

yea I had to put it up a few times out of necessity towards the end there and oh it was n so much agl

jackie tretorn (elmo argonaut), Monday, 8 August 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

hahaaaaa yeah that's when you know it's haircut time

p.s. i tried the hairband curling thing this morning (washed and messily dried hair last night) and it totally works for me! i didn't use any product and only had it in (on?) for 20 min and did it loosely so it made nice big curls and waves. then i rode somewhere on my bike and it turned all 80s wave/fanned-out, but i put combs in and all was well again :)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 8 August 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

Hi ILS, I need hair help!

This is my wedding veil:

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQyAUD0Bb-

I have dark brown wavy hair just past my shoulders. No bangs, but some shorter layers (chin-length, I guess) around my face.

How should my hair be did?

quincie, Friday, 12 August 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

Hmmm why didn't that image link?

quincie, Friday, 12 August 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

http://www.blissbookimages.com/news/wp-content/uploads/il_430xn100288185.jpg

This is not me, but the birdcage veil is similar, but with a small feather fascinator instead of a bow.

quincie, Friday, 12 August 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

Need hair help, pls.

I prefer to have it down-ish because otherwise I look like a pinhead.

quincie, Friday, 12 August 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

finger wave!

tehresa, Friday, 12 August 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

^^^^ Otm

ljubljana, Saturday, 13 August 2011 01:34 (fourteen years ago)

quincie, congrats! when are you getting married?
I am getting married on Saturday(!) and my hairstylist is going to do a victory roll on the left side of my head with my bangs poofy and slightly curled.. the bulk of my hair will be down and curled. I have a similar birdcage veil and she's going to stick this big flower hair clip I bought onto the right side of my head.

She did a 10 minute mock up of my hair then unpinned it so as not to ruin the surprise for the fiance, but I took a picture when I got home because it had kept a bit of the shape:

I tried to find red hair extensions and could find none, alas! I wanted for once to have full, long hair! I am pleased however as when I got engaged two years ago my hair looked like this and I just *knew* I wanted something that could support victory rolls! Yay for brighter, funner hair!

Oh wow Saturday! You will look so so so fab with that hairdo! I'm getting hitched on October 15. I love victory rolls and think my hair could support one, but I after a bit of googling I still haven't found a stylist in the area who specializes in vintage styles--how did you find yours??

Would love to see the dress to go with that hairdo :) Pics, please!

quincie, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

q, I think finger curls/waves are the way forward for you and your delicious veil! Victory roll idea feels like the wrong era for that headpiece.

Laurel those are all GREAT! The first is shorter than my hair, but maybe I just need to take the other two and shop them around to salons saying "uh can you do this?"

It is times like these when it would be helpful to live in NYC. I'm sure your fair city is lousy with vintage hairstylists.

quincie, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

I'm glad you like! I think of you as being more elegant than the rockabilly thing wd suggest -- don't get me wrong, I like the rockabilly thing, but much like the All-American Prepette, it can never be truly chic. (See "Dressing ILX" poll for that to make sense.) tza was right, finger waves are really glamorous partly because they don't draw attention to themselves except to make your hair look even more beautiful.

Hey um, my victory roll and birdcage combo will look super chic. I'll prove it next week. ;)

Quincie, my usual hairstylist is doing my hair! I live in Toronto - can't recall where you are - and she's been doing my red for a while. Luckily she's a Jill of all trades!

Oh and pics - I don't have a good one. But I will get a picture of me on here post-wedding!
