I put my hair in pin curls last night on the most random of whims and it is a fluffy sight today. I kind of want to keep experimenting with this. If I can get it right, I think it will be fun.

Jenny, I do like pin curls! There are even ways of putting them up that look like hair-dos in and off themselves, and then also look good the next day when it's curly. That's two days' worth of good hair with very little fuss, ime.

Hmmm... I will investigate this. I would like a new way to get my hair off my neck and out of my face.
― ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Friday, 22 July 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)
My way is loosely based on having my hair professionally "put up" once and sort of ham-fistedly stealing the tricks as far as I can manage. Will try to find a video that approximates it? Basically it's just pulling hair back in sections and rolling it into loops around my fingers and then pinning them down w bobby pins. The shape comes from always pushing "forward and up", as my stylist said, so you get more volume at the top.
Think of each successive curl as being "nestled" along-side previous ones? A cheesy word but conveys that they should be just slightly overlapping each other and kind of tightly pushing together to make one complicated-looking interwoven area.

Okay this woman. All beauty tutorials are annoying somehow? But bear with this one. I always like this woman's hair-dos.

I do what she does, except I pin aside my "bangs" area and save it for last so I can make it swoop on top of the other bits and finish the look from the front. Also I continue pinning curls in the back where she just makes a bun, but either way.

"easy" summer lookit is hard! i had to stop halfway through bc my arms were tired and my brain was frustrated! i have no patience for hair, perhaps...i think i'm just tired. (i know bc i heard myself think "aagh i am never going to have pretty hair and i am never going to have a boyfriend!", to which i laughed, tiredly)but i finished and i look ridic but at least i tried! and it's curling my hair up at least

Um tips...you have to pull the strand of hair in the direction that you want it to sit on the head? Cos you want the hairs to be pulled kind of tight and not...puff out when you get up to the scalp. So if you're going to pin the curl at the back/crown of your head, you pull it that way before you start rolling, so the hairs are under equal tension.
Other tips: I like the way this looks better if I do it dry, but it might be easier to learn the ropes when hair is wet?

Ha, you guys ... Laurel, you are like a hair scientist and Robin, your hair looked just fine the one time I was privileged enough to meet you.
My summer hair style involves showering plus air drying. If anyone expects any more from me they can just fuck right off. Oh, sometimes pins and/or elastics are added.

Ok so I tried again in a modified way (level: extra easy) and it worked :) basically just did two pincurls and pinned the back up with a comb (back is pretty short) - looks very loose and pretty, esp after initial curls taking hold. Thank you, L! and thank you vp for niceness :)
My hair and I are now at a show and i am drinking a beer (hair is not drinking tonight)

So glad! Feeling good about hair-dos is totally within everyone's grasp. Also helpful is the fact that modern people expect very very little in terms of competency with pinning/curling/styling hair, so even small efforts impress. Lucky for us.
― it's not that print journalists don't have a sense of humour, it's just (Laurel), Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:57 (fourteen years ago)
haha totally. It's like 'oh you look nice' simply bc hair is up (not ponytail). Part of my issue was not owning the force of bobby pins, like I just didnt get all that they could do. figuring it out.
My summer hair in general has been pretty good this year! Due to good shampoo and conditionr and blow drying properly (no product. Every hair product i try makes me break out! so eff it)
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 23 July 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)
What shampoo/conditioner are you using?
I will plug my favorite shampoo ever: solid shampoo from some Internet hippies called Chagrin Valley… Soap? I just search those terms and there it is. My fave summer conditioner is that $2 Suave coconut conditioner. I was buying something at Lush the other day and the clerk asked me about my conditioner preferences and she gave me such a side eye. Judgey!!!!
I am w/ Virginia Plain. Wash, comb, go. Of course I do that in the winter, too. I don't even own a hair dryer.
I'm not sure of I can pull off the style in that tute. My hair is shoulder length but in layers so it's not really that long. I'm going to give it a shot, however.
― ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Saturday, 23 July 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)
I use aveda brilliant shampoo and conditioner but also use khiels olive fruit conditioner. My hair is thick and can be kind of dry and frizzy if I use any ol stuff (and my scalp and skin in general is super sensitive, so sodium laurel sulphate and etc causes breakouts + dryness.)
Going to try more pincurls today! :)

Oh and when I learned how to properly use a pro hairdryer with one of those spiky metal brushes a few years ago, it totally changed my hair life. like I bring my hairdryer with me when I travel.

Okay, I tried this again (boring Sunday night) and I definitely don't have long enough hair to do what the nice blond lady in the video did, and I definitely need more practice to turn this from a thing I sleep on to make my hair curly to a thing I can do to my hair in public. Also, standing there sweating in my bathroom and trying to pin curl my hair kind of made the shower I took pointless. Ha. I see some potential, however.

Just bought hair straighteners for the first time (although they won't arrive for a bit)! I use a Braun cordless curling tong thing usually but about half the time they don't get hot enough to sort out my hair. Just gonna use it for straightnin out bits that curl out/in wrongly.

keratin express treatments?
this sounds v intersting to me. i want smooth hair. i think mostly because i've lost patience for blow outs but i'm tired of my hair looking half done all the time.

(Off topic, but I really want to make excuses/ask forgiveness for my figure or weight or something else in these photos, but I'm going to NOT, because that's personally undermining and bad for me.)

Aw shucks! Okay but seriously, this was my 3rd or 4th day doing the style, and it turned out particularly well, but I just used the directions from that youtube thing and went for it. It did take 1 hair elastic and 3 difft sizes of pins: giant 3" hairpins, little bendy hairpins, and bobby pins. And a fine-toothed comb and hairspray. That's it!
