also, photographs are not actually what we look like in real life!! cameras might be based on the human eye but they are not actually human

I think this camera is the devil maybe?
― tehresa, Friday, 8 July 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
like, i did a photography session with a friend back in early springtime, for a course he's taking - he had to do portraits in natural light. i srsly only had some concealer and a bit of mascara on! and was getting over a cold and all that winter time had caused to my poor dry skin. some of the photos were pretty good, somehow, but a lot of them were like No. The light, natural or otherwise, plus the capturing of a mere 1/500th of a second of yr self in action, causes a lot of things to happen to faces! weird things! i make a lot of hilarious faces too, but this is a part of who we are! do not change that for the tyranny of photography!xpsometimes!
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 8 July 2011 15:01 (fourteen years ago)
that said, now i know to wear a full face of "natural looking" make-up for any and all natural-light photography sessions that might occur in future, or at least when the natural light is that dull winter's day blue-tinged business
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 8 July 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
Yessssss, robyn has it. There are certain people that just don't look like THEMSELVES in photos because the thing that is "them" about their faces is the motion/expressions. I think this about ilxor bell labs all the time when I see pics, that she hardly ever looks the way I envision her. Have noticed it with someone else recently too. But anyway a small amount of that is always going to be in play, that we look a bit less "ourselves" when caught for that second unless we're caught in the middle of genuine emotion but still....

FFM, you look totally cute without make-up . . . I guess you just look cute in general.
― Virginia Plain, Friday, 8 July 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)
She does!
At the very least, I now have a hair appt for tomorrow so something good may come of this experience! And I will try my best not to cry at the thought of future googling that may yield my bio. I think my only stalker now lives with me anyway.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 July 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)
I had the most awful headshot taken for my work photo, and that went up in the office reception area so everyone who came into the office could see it. I looked like a fat 12-year-old-boy. I am the most un-photogenic person ever though, in that I always seem to get caught at a bad angle or making a dumb face.

xxxxp: It could be worse--there are agencies that don't allow their aides to watch TV or play video games with their clients.
I've been looking for a good self-tanner to use on my legs, but all of the ones I can find are made to turn skin much darker than I want. I want my legs to be the same color as my arms and face. Any suggestions?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)
i used the dove tanner before - it's okay. kind of yellow, though. st tropez is supposed to be amazing.
― just1n3, Saturday, 9 July 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)
I can't see "San Tropez" without automatically singing "Bain du Soliel for that San Tropez tan"!
Pardon my French.

so i think i've actually found that getting the 'your july birchbox has shipped' email helps me curb my desire to buy makeup! like... i was just thinking about browsing sephora for some new products but that $10 investment sort of kept me from spending $50.
― tehresa, Saturday, 9 July 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)
lol me too! I'm really anxious for it to arrive now though. I have already checked the mail twice this morning. :/

L-R no make-up (actually really light eyeshadow and mascara cause I didn't bother washing it off from this morning but nothing on my face/lips), make-up (eyeshadow, liner, mascara, foundation, blush, powder, lipstick)

So I am also one of those ppl who rarely leaves the house sans make-up even though i don't actually wear tons when I do. The make-up pic there is a "heavy" going out look for me. I have started to go out more and more without though because I had a day a couple months ago where I forgot eyeliner and felt self-consciously naked all day which sort of bothered me. IDK. I love make-up insofar as I think it's awesome and fun to play around with but I definitely would like to try the leaving the house without thing more often.
― my ponies hate you (ENBB), Monday, 11 July 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)
Horseshoe, you should know that the reason I can write shit like that publicly is thanks to an amazing email you sent me ~ four (holy shit four??!?) years ago in which you were basically like "I have been trying out this new thing called not hating myself and maybe you'll like it and here are some websites" (except longer and far more eloquent) which was pretty much like tossing me a life preserver. So a hero is you. For real.
btw I asked HS to send me these websites and I've been reading and enjoying the hell out of them this weekend. I guess that subject material isn't really about cosmetics though and could have its own thread altogether but yeah - they are great and so is HS in many many ways. :)

audrey horne for sure.
btw you look the pretty much the same in both photos to me. you'd be useless for a 'stars without makeup' issue of in touch or whatever.

By the way, if anyone wants to feel young, they should go to Primola restaurant on the Upper East Side. I was the youngest person there by about 30 years. I think it's where the Madoffs used to dine.

― tehresa, Friday, 15 July 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)
Hahaha totally. The granola bar was p yummy though and you're right about the polish, I like it a lot.
― (。◕‿‿◕。) (ENBB), Friday, 15 July 2011 23:17 (fourteen years ago)
yeah but i also remember seeing this brand of granola bar in a starbucks 2 weeks ago and saying to my friend that it looked way too sweet and she was like 'yes, it's too sticky/sweet' and then bam, it shows up at my door. i haven't eaten it yet but i'm just thinking hey, i did not sign up for monthly snacks delivery. if i wanted that i'd pursue a better curator like markers or something.

i still love getting the box but i am a bit sad that of the two full size-ish products i have gotten so far (stila eyeshadow and laura geller bronzer thing), neither are products that i can use.
the redken hair spray is nice. i actually just ran out of a shine spray thing i had, so good timing. i wish i'd had the hair oil before i chopped off 3-4 inches last weekend :(
― tehresa, Friday, 15 July 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)
Aw yeah that sounds sad. Wait you got hair oil this time? I didn't. Here's what I got:
Nail Polish (shade: Shay)Redken stuffPhilosophy cleanserAhava Mineral Hand Cream - <3 this
From what I've seen online I think you maybe got the oil instead of the hand cream?

Is it sad that I can recognize the Bourjois eyeshadows and lipglosses in the box?

Is the hair oil some of the argan stuff? b/c I've been using some of that for the past few months (10 drops every week or so) and it's pretty great.

I am a jojoba oil superfan.

anyone watch the pixiwoo makeup channel on youtube? they're two brit sisters who are professional MUAs. i really like their tutorials: no stupid music or titles, no waffling about boring stuff, just straight-up makeup techniques. i actually watch/listen to them for relaxation purposes (kind of weird, but they both have really pleasant voices). anyways, they have lots of super glam looks for some ilxor ladies that want to go a little crazy, but also really basic techniques and product reccs.
i got bored saturday morning and put on a full face of makeup, incl. foundation: it looked... weird. like, i would feel really REALLY self conscious wearing that much makeup out during the day, but if i was going to a fancy event at night, i would feel okay about it.
i still don't like either of the foundations i have, but i realised that foundation actually does look a lot better once it's well-powdered - less painterly.
of course, now i want to buy lots of useless makeup to play with. i kind of enjoy the process of putting it on, i just don't like wearing it out so much.

If you like lipstains, and god knows I do, check out Revlon's Once Bitten. I've tried two colors (Twilight (rmde) and Gothic) and I loooove them both. Twilight is a good every day color and Gothic is a fantastic red.
Prior to this I was on board with Sephora's Merlot (or maybe cabernet, I don't know it's named after wine) and before that with Benetint but this Revlon stuff is my new jam. It's also $9 and BOGO half off at my Walgreens.
(still looking for the perfect mascara, btw. the Lancome smeared everywhere and some Rimmel stuff a coworker suggested is clump city. bought a different flavor of Voluminous today that smells like honeysuckle, which is super weird. I remain hopeful.)

i've been waiting for lip stains to take it up a notch since the last time i tried to use them and it was like either coloring my lips with a marker (nagl) or tacky to the touch and tasted bad (no thanks). good to hear that there have been developments.
