i still use Clinique Naturally Glossy mascara. i've tried many others - did not like Dior Show, too clumpy, brush too big, and find voluminous a bit too matte or something, but haven't tried it in many years so maybe it's changed. but anyway, i always go back to this clinique one because it never causes raccoon eyes or makes my eyes hurt or anything. it's not super dramatic though - great for daytime but maybe not yr thing at night if you're looking for faaaab eyelashes. clinique does make one for that too, which i like, actually.

i am right now into BRONZE EYESHADOW over a thin line of dark brown eyeshadow used as eyeliner. it is pretty and summery and only slightly drama.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)
that sounds pretty!
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
i have made no progress at all with eyeshadow experimentation
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
I feel like that Smashbox eyeshadow box was like a key to magical eyeshadow land and now I get how it works. I have also accepted that I'm never going to be one of those bright color Mac eyeshadow ladies and am enjoying gaining some basic competence with neutral (on me) colors.
Ohohoh also - Smashbox eyeshadow primer! I accidentally went hiking in 90 degree direct sunlight on Saturday and my eye makeup looked GREAT. I credit that primer.
Mascara is still daunting. I was hoping you would all love one kind and I could just get that. I don't want raccoon eyes. I don't really care about drama. I don't want clumps or spider lashes or lashes that look false. I think my lashes are sufficiently long/thick but they are just very light brown.

I have all the mascara-application confidence in the world, but puny little eyelashes. I wish wearing falsies was easier.
― Fa la la (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 22:10 (fifteen years ago)
yeah! i got a copper eyeliner that is really cool!xpost
i am wondering if i should attempt to use that laura geller bronzer as an eyeshadow.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 22:13 (fifteen years ago)
what is the smashbox box? link?
Oh! Sephora brand eyeshadow crayon comes in a lovely color of orange/bronze that I would recommend wholeheartedly. I like it for occasions when I want to wear something between neutral and purple.
― Fa la la (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 22:14 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think I can find/link it on my phone but if you search Sephora for Smashbox Softbox Eye Palette, that's it. I love it like crazy.
― phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 22:20 (fifteen years ago)
that looks nice!my bff raves about their color wheel palette.i've been using sephora brand shadow and it is... not good.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
ooh smashbox box!i am a neutral eyeshadow fan too. like of course i always want to wear bright teal or bright purple or wahtever, of course, but it just makes me look like i have bright teal or bright purple bruises on my eyes. ngal.
i love mascara and have basically worn some form of it since i was 14! (tho i was only allowed to use bonne belle clear mascara until i was 17, haha)
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 22:33 (fifteen years ago)
xps to jenny:
i'm no makeup expert but imo if you just want a pretty simple mascara and aren't looking for massive plump glam eyelashes, just get maybelline or covergirl mascara BUT invest in a pair of curlers AND always always always lightly wipe the mascara wand on a piece of tissue/toilet paper before applying.
oh and when you apply it: sort of zigzag the brush through your eyelashes - don't just pull it straight up.
― just1n3, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 02:00 (fifteen years ago)
yes! i forget where i learned the zigzag trick but i've been doing it for years and it is key for not clumping/good definition.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 02:01 (fifteen years ago)
Zigzag! Okay, fun. Thanks!
― phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 02:03 (fifteen years ago)
I have never zigzagged and am going to try it tomorrow morning!
― ljubljana, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
Oh yeah zigzagging is key.
voluminous also melts on me. i'm a cover girl lash exact/lash blast girl. dior show also made me a racoon.
― tehresa, Tuesday, June 28, 2011 5:42 PM (Yesterday) Bookm
I am very surprised by this!
Did you guys try the waterproof? That's what I use. Also, are we talking bottom lashes? Cause I only very rarely apply mascara on the bottom and then maybe it does smear a bit, yeah. Def don't have that prob up top with the H2Oproof though.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 13:19 (fifteen years ago)
I'm always intending to try an expensive mascara but I always end up grabbing a tube of some L'Oreal kind from the drugstore instead, Jenny. So I'll put in another vote for the Voluminous, which comes in a straight-sided gold-colored tube. It's...good enough.
― you're in the club and the light hits your ass like pow (Laurel), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 13:31 (fifteen years ago)
applying mascara is pretty much a guarantee that I will cry in the next 8 hours.
― kate78, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:28 (fifteen years ago)
What color lip gloss would look good on me?
― ephendophile (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)
I was at the drug store yesterday and Voluminous is cheap so I bought some! There are approx 100 different kinds (even some that look the exact same except one promises lashes 4x as long while the other promises lashes 5x as long) so I went with "original" black in a grayish-brownish-purplish tube, 4x. Not waterproof bc I need to be able to wash it off with relative ease or I won't bother. Then I zigzagged!!!!
This sounds insane given the "longer fuller lashes now!!!!!" cosmetic zeitgeist but it might make my lashes look too long? I don't know. I might just not be used to it. It's only 9:30 here but I'm out and about until after 9 pm tonight so it will be a good day to test longevity.
My plan is to try it for a week and then if I don't like it, try another, working my way from cheapest to most expensive.
xp Eric what is your coloring like?
― phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)
Voluminous is fine on me if I'm not wearing undereye concealer, but that combo produces some sort of melting effect that the Lash Exact avoids. I always go for the voluminous if I'm lazy and not concealing (p often, I fear).
― quincie, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:41 (fifteen years ago)
x-post
TOO LONG? Nonsense. ;p
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:49 (fifteen years ago)
I am a pale ginger.
― ephendophile (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:50 (fifteen years ago)
Are you interested in a neutral or a more steppin out look?
― Fa la la (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:52 (fifteen years ago)
Neutral. I don't want it poppin'.
― ephendophile (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 15:00 (fifteen years ago)
wow im having a hard time adjusting makeup and clothing to my newly blonded hair.
― Serial Chiller (sunny successor), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 15:09 (fifteen years ago)
you guys, i just remembered where i learned the zig-zag technique: grade 8 home-ec! i guess we had a class on make-up application? i hardly remember but i do remember the zig-zag o_O
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
You got to do make-up in home ec? NOT FAIR! All we did was sew ice cream cone pillows and bake muffins. I forgot to put flour in mine. They didn't turn out very well.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 20:25 (fifteen years ago)
i made a plush kangaroo + joey in my 8th gr home ec class!
― Fa la la (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 21:36 (fifteen years ago)
I made a soccer ball. Then we had the woodworking semester where I made the most phallic racecar ever! :S
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
I made a skirt. A terrible, lopsided skirt.
Learning how to put on make up in home ec strikes me as kind of horrible.
― phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
home ec filled up too fast and i had to take typing
― tehresa, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
my school didn't even have home ec. perhaps not a coincidence that i don't know how to put on eye makeup.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
Our Home Ec class got renamed 'Food Technology' iirc. We had to make milkshakes and they had this cupboard of FLAVOURS which had all the flavours in the world in little bottles.
― kinder, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
for reference -- before i switched schools in 8th gr (and made the kangaroo) i went to an all girls school gr 1-7 and we had home ec in 7th gr and there was NO makeup application -- although in 4th grade we did have a class about manners (my class was notoriously "wild" and we even had halloween taken away from us one year, during which we were required to write a report about a famous woman in american history as punishment)

― horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)
who did you write about?
amelia earhart! my bff wrote about emily dickinson.
― Fa la la (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)
aw. well-done, both of you!
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 22:02 (fifteen years ago)
I sewed an apron and an ugly Christmas-themed pillow in 8th grade home ec. Also a dress from a LAURA ASHLEY pattern in a floral print, though I played dumb and got my mom to do the nominally difficult parts for me. No makeup application, but we did learn how to make SAUSAGE BALLS lolAlabama.
― quincie, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 22:11 (fifteen years ago)
that's pretty good 'punishment'. i would totally rather have done that than sew the freakin elastic-waistband SHORTS (mauve cotton) i had to sew in home ec (yeah maybe it was called something else? i don't remember) - and a TOP (white with green and purple polka dots) too! but i'm glad i have those skillz now tbh, i mean, the pattern part and the measuring and matching up is a skill in itself for actual non-sewing-related life. the cooking part was meh - i already was into baking because my mom has always been a cookie-making fiend!
anywayi do not even own an eyelash curler! i feel like my eyelashes curl enough? but could they curl MORE??i usually put a little mascara on lower lashes but only really on outer lashes (not ones closer to inside corner of eye)
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 30 June 2011 04:16 (fifteen years ago)
Ended up with BB cream blush in Sheer Lilac - never thought I'd suit a lilac blush but I think it works (it's more pink than lilac really). Never used a cream blush before, might make my skin look a bit crinkly, but maybe that's just during application...
― ljubljana, Thursday, 30 June 2011 11:41 (fifteen years ago)
omg it's the most exciting day of the yeargratis at work!! $500 RTL to pick out stuff from our brands. perfume is more expensive, but, they give us so much I don't need any more! so it's all about makeup. (Sm@shb0x and b0urj0is) yay!

― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 30 June 2011 14:07 (fifteen years ago)
it's crazy though because I don't even know where to begin, haha. we have a few displays in the office but i have to run back and forth between the order sheet (on computer) and the display to figure out what stuff i want. first world problems!
this makes up for me being super super sick right now, yay
