TOPSIDERS

Yerac, Saturday, 30 April 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

My loafers came today, which is YAY because I thought it would be another WEEK.

However the BOOOOOOOO is that they're CRAZY narrow. Serious. This is supposed to be "M", and M(edium) is the only width Bass makes for women, and they are TINY. I have extra room in the toes, but even with bare feet my insteps are wedged under steel bands in these things.

aw dang! surely they will stretch a little, but maybe not enough?

i can tina turner (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Bass tends to be pretty narrow. You could always donate them to me:)

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

NICE TRY, BRIGHT EYES.

No seriously I think I figured it out: they're not horribly narrow in the soles, but the vamps are cut assuming you have very flat arches. Like, there's no VERTICAL room in the band where the pennies go. It has no arch.

I'm stretching them at my desk with a large cone-shaped spool of thread and a staple remover jammed under it.

Darn your Yankee ingenuity.

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

scored a pair of allen edmonds captoe oxfords yesterday for $7! in great condition except for a small gouge in the leather which i hope is repairable, but even if not, awesome thrift score. cordovan color but i don't think they are actually proper cordovan

i can tina turner (elmo argonaut), Sunday, 8 May 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

my mister just got a pair of proper cordovan allen edmonds, and they really are a work of art!

quincie, Monday, 9 May 2011 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

yeah come to think of it the fact that the leather is gouged pretty much confirms that they are not cordovan, huh

Laurel, Sissy Spacek was wearing the hell out of some penny loafers (among other things) in Badlands

omg i finally bought shoes! three pairs! of flats that i can actually walk in and not be in pain! o_O i walk a lot and the cowboy boots i've been wearing constantly really need a new sole + yknow, it's nice to change the look up.
shoes!:

gentle souls by kenneth cole, super soft matte black leather, not heinously ugly for a 'comfortable shoe' that one can walk in
http://www.planetshoes.com/mmplanet/Images/13724/13724_127_detail.jpg

bc brand, fairly inexpensive but real leather (i wrote this brand off b/c they have so many faux-leather shoes and faux leather = pain to my feet), less pink irl, v cute

and the classic clark moccasins i've been wanting forever

me too

i needed some study but not ugly walking sandals and bought these and I LOVE THEM -- comfortable beyond reason, attractive, sturdy-feeling

horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

got some v classic beige quilted ballet flats with patent black cap toe. Chanel style, but these are Delman (on major sale. they make some v stodgy looking shoes but their ballet flats are great)

daria, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

Lech and hs: I rly like both of those! LL: I wanted some clonky wedge-heeled brightly colored leather sandals this year too but haven't settled on a style/brand either.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

hs, I like those a lot!! where are they from? want

daria, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

i got them from dsw...they're seychelles, i think a season old maybe? v v comfortable and a little sparkly. i love them!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

they were also available in purple and black iirc

horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Are these a bad idea? I kind of wish they were red or a fun color, but I like the shape of the heel and the grommets. Plus the idea of wearing them and being super tall but also comfortable is really appealing. On sale.

heartbreak beet (La Lechera), Sunday, 19 June 2011 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

Other option, but I like the heel less because it's more round and YOW 70s!
I like the toe area more though

heartbreak beet (La Lechera), Sunday, 19 June 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

I like the first pair because of the grommets and the ankle straps. They are pretty badass.

I have absurd feet and must buy all of my shoes from places like Footsmart and Ugly Orthopedic Shoes 4 U, so I am going to live vicariously through you all re: your adorable sandal purchases.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

I need some cute versitle flat sandals and am having trouble choosing. Boo.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

versatile, even

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

should i buy clarks desert boots as my go-to (read: only) dress shoes y/n

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

Thank you for your input! I am leaning heavily toward the first ones because the second ones are just a little too tame/round. I like the color of the sole on the first one better too.

After this no more sandals for a while.

ENBB-- may I recommend not totally flat? Like, a teeny heel? Totally flat can be bad for yr feet and isn't as flattering.
GBX - I would say no, but mostly because I don't really think of those as dress shoes?

heartbreak beet (La Lechera), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

bear in mind that i have been wearing chucks as "dress shoes" for like five years now. i'm....That Guy

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

like i actually got confronted by some imperious dickhead neurosurgical resident about "[my] appearance" because i had the temerity to wear comfortable canvas shoes with my slacks and button-up shirt. fuck that guy.

...but i figure it might not be a bad idea to have shoes that can pass as 'neutral' in a clinical setting

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

Lalech - yes, you can! I will look for a small heel but heels confuse me on sandals. Idk. I'm going to keep looking. I really hate shopping sometimes.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i am actually starting to experience a lot of pain from shoes that are completely flat. i'm old :(

tehresa, Sunday, 19 June 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

no, completely flat shoes are dumb and more abt cheapness of manufacturer than yr feet. it's all about the INNER non-flatness of seemingly flat shoes! (which you end up paying more money more, cf shoes i bought while in SF)

i salute anyone who can wear and walk in platform cork sandals! i really do!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

gbx, how about something like this: http://www.eccousa.com/shoes/mens/dress/boston-apron-toe-tie/2561/detail.aspx

Per Jeff, they are very comfortable and per me they are nice enough to satisfy imperious dickhead neurosurgical residents and you won't look like a sitcom doctor wearing Chucks with slacks and they can be the all occasion Shoes You Wear When Chucks Will Not Do.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

seem nice but that heel seems p large for my tastes?

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

these are sweeet but limited edition

http://www.freshnessmag.com/2008/09/24/ships-x-clarks-desert-boots-limited-edition/

as are these

http://hypebeast.com/2007/10/clarks-black-ballistic-nylon-desert-boots/

ballistic!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

gbx - Maybe these? http://www.zappos.com/clarks-graves-black-leather

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

anyway, i think clark's desert boots are a-ok as long as you get them in a darker colour
xp
yes!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

Those desert boots remind me of the hippie doctor from the ER vets show on Animal Planet. Maybe that's what you're going for? How much do you have to kind of subvert your own style to the tastes of snooty residents at this point in your medical career? (Like, it's just a given that even the hippiest of hippie lawyers have to own and wear a plain suit w/ sensible shoes sometimes, regardless of our style/preferences, so I don't know if that's how it works for doctors, too.)

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Sunday, 19 June 2011 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

enh, since i'm planning on general practice at this point, i could basically start wearing tie-dye and sandals all the time if i felt like it

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Sunday, 19 June 2011 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, well fuck it. Get the desert boots.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Sunday, 19 June 2011 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

~groovy~

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Sunday, 19 June 2011 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

hippie doctor look a+ in my book!
xp
lol!
srsly though, it's a good idea to have a pair of comfortable shoes that are not cons or hiking boots

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 19 June 2011 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

it was weird, i recently decided on this general practice thing and it was like "oh yeah that seems right" and sort of a relief but sometimes i wonder if it was mostly motivated by a desire to just be a dude

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Sunday, 19 June 2011 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

I think we have discussed how much you look like a younger version of my GP (who is also the official doctor of Chicago ILXors in that I think like five or six of us are his patients haha) and I could see him rolling in desert boots.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to just be a dude, plus a good GP is a wonderful thing.
