tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

The makeup that I think looks garish on me looks too light to everyone else. I've realized that I can't judge myself on this.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

One thing I've never been able to understand: I was allowed to wear whatever type of makeup once I reached the age of 12...everything, that is, except powder. I was considered too young to wear powder all through my teens even though I was wearing everything else. I've never been able to understand that. Can anyone else figure this out?

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

Weird parents?

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

Older parents? But I've never been able to find any reference to face powder being considered particularly adult in the Thirties or Forties when they grew up. So I don't know.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Thirties *and* Forties, I should say.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

parents always think their kids' skin is perfect and beautiful and does not need to be f'ed up with foundation and powder, maybe thats it

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

i was allowed to use powder before i was allowed to use foundation!

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

same here

sarahel, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

me too

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

so yeah, Christine, what Abbott said, weird parents.

sarahel, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

i was allowed to use powder before i was allowed to use foundation!

Me, too. I can still smell the Cover Girl Clean Make Up by Noxema.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Monday, 21 March 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

I still use CG pressed power. Never found one I liked better.

ENBB, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

hahaha yes! that smell!!!

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

I used the hell out of Coty loose powder. The smell of that is so evocative that I can hardly stand it if someone else is wearing it. My Coty thread was not very popular, but I bet everyone who grew up in the US has used one of their products at least once. Their lipstick used to be like a permanent stain iirc.

I also used Maybelline pressed powder when I was like 12. My mom didn't really care.

Ralpharina (La Lechera), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man – my best friend in jr high reapplied her Coty powder every couple hours.

http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/public/4sCEm2Igb3YlhBUc4bu3kWogYF1J1cY5U-XRcCkWWg4Kc8wAelgT43RSBw8zZfYg6z6nsxCK5pIL6rVNiBGCQp_UDJwq3qd-QM-O2Zw7Eu3H845IddP5Qu4R_XSnPN84XmQ5n072gHtrp4D9VOuKEvHpZTEl4lIQ

She had all this peachfuzz and the putting all this powder on top of it gave her face a fuzzy, biscuity aura. Maybe this is the reason I am a little nervous about powder to this day.

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ biscuitface.

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

my v pale sister kelly used that in the 80s - hers was just totally white
i thought it was fancy when i was little, lol!

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

That powder is actually supposed to be excellent and is still praised by make-up artists because of it's fine texture. I've always wanted to try but I need something I can cary around with me hence he CG compact.

ENBB, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

That's it! Mine was so so so white.
Their powder made me feel super old fashioned, so it matched my thrifted old lady handbag and old lady dress. I think I even used some super flowery old lady perfume (Laura Ashley maybe?), just for consistency. I sprayed it into one of my purses so the smell of mothballs and perfume always reminds me of that purse.

Ralpharina (La Lechera), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

I think maybe this girl was doing something wrong to make her face look like that – idk what – she just had a bad track record with aesthetic experimentation. Por ejemplo, she tried to spike her hair by using a hot glue gun, and had to cut off most of her hair after.

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

omg

ENBB, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

Oh bless her heart.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

Powder foundation! I didn't even know you could get foundations you apply with a brush. Thanks Jenny for the BB blush suggestion even though high-end. Looking forward to checking these two products out.

ljubljana, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

re makeup remover: there's a kandee johnson vid that suggests mixing olive oil with witch hazel as an eye makeup remover (50/50)

just1n3, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

hey is that girl on the makeup video youtubes on the kashi commercial? i swear she looks exactly like one of the 'customer reviews'.

tehresa, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

I have v flaky skin, esp on my nose & forehead. Which, foundation just accentuates hugely.

My cheeks can get really flaky. Exfoliation and moisturizing helps a lot.

I've been using a bunch of things from philosophy, and they seem to be working.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

What do you like from Philosphy?

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

Philosophy, that is.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

I use their micropeel set thingie and it has helped A LOT with dry skin. Pretty serious stuff though, in strength and cost. Still cheaper than aesthetician prices when you consider how many peels you get from one purchase.

for me it was black bikinis. apparently white bikinis that go semitransparent when wet were just fine.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

I did the micropeel this morning, and it totally got rid of these persistent dry circles I've had all week. I bought it when I had a 20% off coupon from Ulta.

I like the stuff in the Makeup Optional Kit.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

the microdelivery peel? i love that stuff! i gotta spring for the kit... i was just telling daria this last night!

tehresa, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

can you guys link to this?

ENBB, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

I can't link to the Make Up Optional kit bc I'm in my phone but I got a free mini version of that when I hit 500 Sephora points and I fell in love with the Purity cleanser and especially the "When Hope Is Not Enough" face goo. I mixed that w/ jojoba oil to make it more moisturizing and it was awesome.

This Supernatural Airbrush Canvas stuff looks fantastic...

I have the microdelivery peel too. pretty great.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

ljubljana, i have the supernatural airbrush canvas foundation but I only used it once. too bronzing for my liking but i like to be pale.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 01:10 (fifteen years ago)

philosophy's 'the present' (no makeup makeup) was a big disappointment

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

I'm so so on that, too. I won't throw it out, but I won't buy it again.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

how far down your nose, sunny?

― ☠ (roxymuzak), Sunday, March 20, 2011 9:53 AM (2 days ago) Bookmark

roxy i believe concealer around the outer corners of your nose. illuminator/highlighter should go along cheekbones in an arch to your browbone and slightly above, down the ridge of your nose, a lil dot above your lips cupids bow, a dot on the inside corner of each eye and some say the chin but i dont really think it look so great on my chin. all of this is to highlight the bone structure. peeps who put illuminator all over their face (i noticed a lot of mac products have illuminators in their foundation (hyperreal?) and moisturizers but i think all this leads to is looking moon faced.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

I've decided that the white-over-pale-pink eye makeup look is too pale, so I've gone back to my old makeup until I can get some extra money together to try something else out--a more vivid pink, maybe?

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

xpost to sunny - me too. I thought the palest shade looked pretty pale on the site, but IRL maybe not - that's often a problem for me.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

Products that bronze should be kept all together in corner somewhere so we can avoid them IMHO.

Christine, what color eyes do you have?

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 06:09 (fifteen years ago)

Greenish hazel.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

I, too, will rep for the philosophy microdelivery peel.

kate78, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

what's it good for? ie - how do I know if I need this peel?

ENBB, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

i got it to try to smooth dry skin/exfoliate and also remove lol age spots (sun damage) on my cheeks
has mostly worked! i was pretty good about doing it every week for a while, but then i didn't want to buy it again so i stopped for a while and did it 1x/mo.
the lady at sephora sold me on it when she straight talked me and said that basically nothing is going to get rid of these spots, but acid will help. nothing short of acid will do anything.

Ralpharina (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

give you tinier pores, too.
