No, it's basically still a concealer as I understand it - but the guy in the shop called it a 'corrector', meaning I think 'those circles are going to need a heavy duty product'.
― ljubljana, Sunday, 20 March 2011 22:56 (fifteen years ago)
shop people can be such jerks.
― tehresa, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
What brand is it?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:07 (fifteen years ago)
Bobbi Brown Corrector. I just looked at the reviews on makeupalley and people love it for the most part. And yes, they all say they have particularly bad circles. I think I'm going to invest.
― ljubljana, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:21 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah the BB is supposed to be really good.
― ENBB, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:22 (fifteen years ago)
I also need
- new foundation with some of that light-diffusing business (been using Prescriptives Real Camellia for about 15 damn years)- a new eyeliner, probably a gel, that's 1. doesn't immediately smudge and 2. is a *soft* black or vv dark brown (considering Bobbi Brown Caviar gel)- a new blusher that doesn't make me look sick when I wear it with black like Orgasm sometimes does.
I'm the kind of sap that's easily duped into the high end of the market, so any low-end recs on those very welcome...
― ljubljana, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:26 (fifteen years ago)
we still need to go to sephora (or maybe bloomingdale's? they're right near each other in friendship heights.. the department store people usually know their stuff better, i think)
i could use some kind of.. either a different foundation, or powder or some kind of primer or something to stop my face from getting too shiny. i'm not really sure what to do, i like the tinted moisturizer i use right now but it can get shiny. feeling kind of dumb here. i never really learned how to wear makeup.
― daria-g, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:15 (fifteen years ago)
Totally not low end, but I just bought my first Bobbi Brown product last week - blush in Tawny 2 - and I love it. The color is perfect and it's got a lot of pigment in it so a very little goes a long way. The last thing I need is to develop another high end make up brand loyalty but dag. This stuff is nice.
Daria, maybe a primer? I think some folks here have good recs on that.

I have new favorite foundation: Laura Mercier powder foundation. It is somehow ten times better than Mac's Studio Fix powder foundation, and I had loved that for many years! Pricey but I bet it will last 8-12 months with more-or-less daily use.
For concealer, I've been using Benefit's "Stay Don't Stray" eye primer, which is supposed to go *under* your concealer. But it seems to do some light-reflecting/dark circle diminishing on its own, so that's how I'm using it. Very easy to blend. I also use it around the sides of my nostrils.
― quincie, Monday, 21 March 2011 13:41 (fifteen years ago)
daria, do you wear powder?
― ☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:39 (fifteen years ago)
I kind of want to start wearing foundation or some kind of face meakeup – something I have never done bcz (minorly gross revelation?) I have v flaky skin, esp on my nose & forehead. Which, foundation just accentuates hugely. There is really no way to get around this, is there?
― Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:41 (fifteen years ago)
there is!!! its a moisturizer that is p cheap called compound 15! if you put that on before makeup, you will never flake again
― ☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:47 (fifteen years ago)
sorry its actually called comPLEX 15
― ☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:48 (fifteen years ago)
:O
The secondary worry is that, not ever having worn foundation, I will look like a 13-year-old girl putting it on for the first time. I will call my sister for help with this one. I am p sure she will love getting asked to do her job for free (just kidding, I usually send her a gift card or something when she helps me out w/cosmetic concerns).

i've totally given up on foundation until i am willing to spend $$$ on it: it just seems to look like paint on my skin, totally unnatural and gross! it looks okay under certain lights, but then i live in a paranoid state that i'll be under neon lights and ppl will start pointing and laughing at me for looking like a clown.
― just1n3, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:09 (fifteen years ago)
ooh quincie i may have to try this laura mercier!
― tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)
The makeup that I think looks garish on me looks too light to everyone else. I've realized that I can't judge myself on this.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:55 (fifteen years ago)
One thing I've never been able to understand: I was allowed to wear whatever type of makeup once I reached the age of 12...everything, that is, except powder. I was considered too young to wear powder all through my teens even though I was wearing everything else. I've never been able to understand that. Can anyone else figure this out?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 16:00 (fifteen years ago)
Weird parents?
― Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 16:01 (fifteen years ago)
Older parents? But I've never been able to find any reference to face powder being considered particularly adult in the Thirties or Forties when they grew up. So I don't know.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)
Thirties *and* Forties, I should say.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 21 March 2011 16:21 (fifteen years ago)
parents always think their kids' skin is perfect and beautiful and does not need to be f'ed up with foundation and powder, maybe thats it
― ☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 16:58 (fifteen years ago)
i was allowed to use powder before i was allowed to use foundation!

― sarahel, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:04 (fifteen years ago)
Me, too. I can still smell the Cover Girl Clean Make Up by Noxema.
― phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Monday, 21 March 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)
I still use CG pressed power. Never found one I liked better.
― ENBB, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)
hahaha yes! that smell!!!
― tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
I used the hell out of Coty loose powder. The smell of that is so evocative that I can hardly stand it if someone else is wearing it. My Coty thread was not very popular, but I bet everyone who grew up in the US has used one of their products at least once. Their lipstick used to be like a permanent stain iirc.
I also used Maybelline pressed powder when I was like 12. My mom didn't really care.
― Ralpharina (La Lechera), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)
Oh man – my best friend in jr high reapplied her Coty powder every couple hours.

She had all this peachfuzz and the putting all this powder on top of it gave her face a fuzzy, biscuity aura. Maybe this is the reason I am a little nervous about powder to this day.
― Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)
lol @ biscuitface.
― tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)
my v pale sister kelly used that in the 80s - hers was just totally whitei thought it was fancy when i was little, lol!
― ☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)
That powder is actually supposed to be excellent and is still praised by make-up artists because of it's fine texture. I've always wanted to try but I need something I can cary around with me hence he CG compact.
― ENBB, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)
That's it! Mine was so so so white. Their powder made me feel super old fashioned, so it matched my thrifted old lady handbag and old lady dress. I think I even used some super flowery old lady perfume (Laura Ashley maybe?), just for consistency. I sprayed it into one of my purses so the smell of mothballs and perfume always reminds me of that purse.
― Ralpharina (La Lechera), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)
I think maybe this girl was doing something wrong to make her face look like that – idk what – she just had a bad track record with aesthetic experimentation. Por ejemplo, she tried to spike her hair by using a hot glue gun, and had to cut off most of her hair after.
― Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
omg

Powder foundation! I didn't even know you could get foundations you apply with a brush. Thanks Jenny for the BB blush suggestion even though high-end. Looking forward to checking these two products out.
― ljubljana, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:04 (fifteen years ago)
re makeup remover: there's a kandee johnson vid that suggests mixing olive oil with witch hazel as an eye makeup remover (50/50)
― just1n3, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:41 (fifteen years ago)
hey is that girl on the makeup video youtubes on the kashi commercial? i swear she looks exactly like one of the 'customer reviews'.

I have v flaky skin, esp on my nose & forehead. Which, foundation just accentuates hugely.
My cheeks can get really flaky. Exfoliation and moisturizing helps a lot.
I've been using a bunch of things from philosophy, and they seem to be working.
― tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)
What do you like from Philosphy?
― phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)
Philosophy, that is.
I use their micropeel set thingie and it has helped A LOT with dry skin. Pretty serious stuff though, in strength and cost. Still cheaper than aesthetician prices when you consider how many peels you get from one purchase.

for me it was black bikinis. apparently white bikinis that go semitransparent when wet were just fine.

I did the micropeel this morning, and it totally got rid of these persistent dry circles I've had all week. I bought it when I had a 20% off coupon from Ulta.
I like the stuff in the Makeup Optional Kit.

the microdelivery peel? i love that stuff! i gotta spring for the kit... i was just telling daria this last night!
