light brown hair is not an option! :D

I like sephora in general, they were the ones who pointed me to the laura mercier maple shade when I said "I want something that feels like clinique's black honey" and they were right on. Or when I went looking for hunter orange eyeshadow they were able to find the most vivid orange available very quickly (whenever I go in I am hauling a ticking time-bomb toddler so time is of the essence). Sometimes you will get a dud salesperson I suppose. I don't go in that often really, I swear!

My favorite product right now is this stila eyeliner/eyeshadow in one:
http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P20757
I have it in slate and can do a smoky eye in like 60 seconds with it.

i always feel like sephora girls are just retail employees w/ no real knowledge of makeup... i've had them make me look awful/cakey/icky.. i feel like i need a redo, too!

tehresa, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

I feel like Sephora employees are sales people first, reliable sources of information somewhere farther down the list.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

My sister is a cosmetologist & the first job she could get out of school was at Sephora. She told me she just said to customers whatever she thought they wanted to hear. Like if they asked about a foundation she'd say, "It's great, it's the one I'm wearing right now" (= lie but she does a great job on that so she sold a lot). I'm not saying they are all like that, but it was like a bragging point for my sister, lord knows why.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I went to Sephora to try and get some actual advice about a product (actually it was the foundation that Clinique totally changed and I needed a replacement for, think I've moaned about it upthread) and they basically just read out what was on the packaging as if I couldn't read it myself and didn't actually know anything like what the difference was between two lines of makeup.

ilx get on my lvl (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 08:18 (fifteen years ago)

xpost Tehresa, let me know if you want to hit a dept store counter for a redo attempt once I'm back after 14th (and obv Quincie too if you're interested!)

ljubljana, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 09:22 (fifteen years ago)

Here are some fun things I got recently

Benefit highlighter called "Girl Meets Pink"
Mac eyeshadow in Patina which is my favorite ever color

ummmm

I think that's it.

Oh for mascara, and believe me I've tried tons from drugstore to top of the line, my old standby is Revlon Voluminous waterproof version in Black. It's $5 a pop and I've never found anything I like better.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 12:09 (fifteen years ago)

I am totally up for hitting dept store counters for redos! I want to learn how to do my eyes in something other than plum or brown.

quincie, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

Excellent, I'll get in touch to organise an assault on Nordstrom when I'm back. First I have to get through 2 weeks of work in the UK equivalent of Scranton NJ as portrayed in The Office.

It ran on me in four hours, sorry. (I was using Very Black or whatever it's called, however.)

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

Why does your mascara run? DO you have watery eyes? I have never had that problem (unless I was crying).

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, no offense, you don't have to answer if you don't want.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

No, I don't cry or rub my eyes a lot, I just end up with raccoon eyes (or at least stains) after several hours. (Today, I went to work at eight and ended up with dark circles around three.) I have rather extreme needs though--11 or 12 hour workdays with 2 hours of commuting and possibly 1-2 hours of shopping afterwards.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

my problem is always flaking. i get stupid black flecks all over. i can't find one that doesn't do this.

tehresa, Thursday, 30 December 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

^^^yes!

Fibers?

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

i tried that once, but it made a huge mess out of my sink!

tehresa, Thursday, 30 December 2010 03:04 (fifteen years ago)

I have no idea what you're referring to, sorry. I was referring to the fibers that are used as lengtheners. Maybe that's what's flaking away.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

ohh i was thinking about that tube fiber mascara stuff.

tehresa, Thursday, 30 December 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

Huh, I've never had Voluminous run even when I've been crying. I do get a little flaking with it but it's very minimal.

ENBB, Thursday, 30 December 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

i like patina too! its like the non-sparkle version of that "midnight cowboy rides again" color that i like, most \o_O/ color name EVER. it has very fine sparkles in it and is very beautiful.

ilx get on my lvl (roxymuzak), Thursday, 30 December 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

ohh i was thinking about that tube fiber mascara stuff.

That stuff is so bizarre and hideous.

:D I also like MCRA (ugh the name though lol) but that's more a special occasion one whereas I were Patina a lot more often.

ENBB, Thursday, 30 December 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i like patina for normal days and midnight cowboy i wear if im playing or going to something fancy

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

I'm assuming Patina's greenish in color, going by the name?

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

no amount of makeup can cover an atrocious posting style

ilx get on my lvl (roxymuzak), Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to ignore that.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

quincie and other red-undertone folks, any recs on a lightweight foundation/tinted moisturizer? I used to use Prescriptives Real Rose and it was great but I hear they closed down their counters and are online-only. my hair turned out good btw! It is very light blonde.

teeny, Thursday, 30 December 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

I use MAC's studio fix powder foundation in I think NC35. It is very lightweight, not much coverage but enough to tone down the redness without it looking too makeup-y. And it doesn't oxidize and go orangey on me (which has been a problem with other foundation/TMs).

Cheers to blonde!

quincie, Thursday, 30 December 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

teeny re gold: i dont mean that glittery sparkley crap (no glitter is my fashion rule), just like a subtle sheen

also olay used to be called oil of ulan in australia. my mom was a devotee. as soon as i think about it i can still smell it 20+ years later.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Friday, 31 December 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

also do you know how hard it is to find black eye shadow without glitter. HARD.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Friday, 31 December 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

Speaking of gold, I'd like to try using gold eyeliner, but the only eyeliner I can use is powder. Would I be able to use gold powdered eyeliner without looking jaundiced? What shade of gold would work best? (I have light brown/50-60% gray hair and green hazel eyes.)

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 31 December 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

haha I was wearing gold eyeliner in my work ID photo and I look like a smug, jaundiced French chef – an awesome look imo.

laura mercier black gold is good! you get a gold tint but the structure of a black eyeliner.

^^ black gold here?

i think i need a different eyeliner.. i have one of the crayon kohl from lancome, and it's great but a little too dramatic for every day, i think. (also JUST figured out how to apply eyeliner without it looking horrific)

daria-g, Saturday, 1 January 2011 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

I don't want black in my eyeliner, though. I want pure gold.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Saturday, 1 January 2011 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

ladies if you want a great set of brushes for a good price:

http://kandeethemakeupartist.blogspot.com/2010/12/make-up-brushes-for-christmas.html

they're crown makeup brushes - apparently really good - and she has organised a discount with them but it ends tonight i think.

got mine today - haven't used them yet but they seem really nice.

just1n3, Saturday, 1 January 2011 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

I got my sister MAC brand makeup brush cleaner for xmas. My mom said she cried when she opened it. "Abbs knows just what I want."

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Saturday, 1 January 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

Christine, I have green eyes too. I've been using the sub-pharmacy brand eyeshadow for years called Milani Golden Green. It is a fantastic non-glittery gold with hints of a muted olivey green. I use it as liner on my bottom lashes and on the lid. I found some pics online but they do it so little justice I think I'll just put it on tomorrow and post a photo. btw i think this commentor on makeup alley is otm:
"I use this wet out of a little sample container and it works beautifully. In the pot it seems like a dull blackened olive. However, applied wet, it turns into a beautiful gold-foiled deep olive. The pigmentation isn't as strong as MAC, but it is pretty good. On the medium-high caliber. The color is not too bright; it's amost a smoky-eye color."

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

Oh also looked great when I was blonde and still does now im brunette

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

Milani? I can get that at CVS (only place around here that stocks it). My eyeshadow is Neutrogena's Simple Sheers in Pebble, and the darker half has a slight gold sheen, so it should look OK with it. Thanks!

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Saturday, 1 January 2011 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Instead of watching the state of the union address yesterday I watched makeup tutorials on youtube. Themakeupgeek is helpful and not annoying! Two thumbs up.

I picked up two new mascaras at CVS, too: CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Waterproof in the color for green eyes (mine are actually hazel) and Maybelline Full and Soft Waterproof in Very Black. Will report my findings.

In other makeup news, I really want some new blush.

quincie, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

I really enjoy watching makeup and skincare tutorials. I find it v relaxing.

dark link (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

eye make up makes me look like a squinty clown. I can pull off lipstick sometimes.
