What's a good gold eyeliner for blue eyes/fair skin do you think? I have now decided my life is incomplete without it.

Regular Stormy (Jenny), Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

:) my life definitely was! and i didn't even know it until somebody gave me a pencil as a present!

honestly i think the revlon would work. it's sort of a noble gold, so it would probably look great with blue. and rox, u have pale-ish skin, right?

i'm sure there are a lot of fancier ones out there, but it's good in a pinch.

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

I have a silver pencil, I don't know why I thought it wd be a good idea b/c I am so not a "cool" tones person, and now I also rly rly want to try a gold one.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

I find pencils very hard to use compared to cake eyeliner (applied wet with lil brush). Please teach me.

quincie, Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

the thick soft pencil i have in gold is really nice for shading, which makes it really nice for fall, and easier to use

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

How do you get a pencil down close to the lashline and not, like, pull on your eyelid to form a wobbly line???

quincie, Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

And do you have to keep them super sharp or . . .?

quincie, Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

q, I do love liquid liner, but I imagine a pencil would make a much more indefinite line so that you don't see the edge of the color, you just see the brightening or eye-catching effect.

Also the place where I think I might like to use a nice goldy pencil is along the waterline under the eye? Seems like a good place for a highlight.

I have a copper-colored liquid eyeliner I really love. I think gold would be fun!

The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Thursday, 14 October 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

i just got a shadow pencil from sephora (store brand) that i really like. it's soft and forgiving, so i don't have to pull my eye. it's easier to apply in a hurry than powdered shadow. could be used as a v thick liner if you're into that sorta thing.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

that is true - liquid is not the way to go if you are hesitant with eyeliner.

you do not have to keep the pencil super-sharp - it depends on what you're going for, and what you're comfortable with.

pulling the lid can be a bad idea because it stretches the skin, and the line ends up looking odd when the skin is not stretched.

i start from the outer corner and work in, and i get the best results when i do nothing special with the lid - i try and keep it in as normal a position as possible and draw the line as close to the lash as i can.

blending with the applicator that comes with many liners can help, and also using a pencil that ISN'T too sharp can help if you're having trouble.

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

xp's

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

(actually, on my right eye, i start with the outer corner, but i draw the line moving outward, i think. so i guess i kind of start in the middle. depends on what hand you use)

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

I find doing wee little overlapping short strokes instead of trying to do it in one elegant telegenic SWOOP is the key to eyeliner success for clumsy ole me. Esp. for liquid! surm's tips are all A+ too.

The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

agreed^^

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

The "short strokes" thing I do NOT understand, at all. I always do liquid liner in a continuous line, or at least in 2 or 3 large sections. If you use short, overlapping strokes, don't you get a totally uneven top line??

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

w/ liquid, i don't think short strokes would work. with pencil, short strokes are sometimes key. and you can just overlap!

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

I mean to say, whatsherface vintage lady with the great hair & make-up tutorials on youtube, she also said "short overlapping strokes" on her make-up vid and I do not comprendo.

xp ahh okay

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

IDK if I try to do liquid in one big line I end up with a way wonkier top line. I mean, obv. everyone should do what works best for them.

The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

they day i master liquid liner i will have made it

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

ive always used liquid because i like blk eyeliner very defined. my pro-tip to the beginner is to put liquid concealer on your lids first and then do the thickest line you can. before the liner dries grab a cotton bud, wet it, pull the outside edge of your out straight out then run the cotton bud from the inside corner of your eyelid to the outside. the cotton bud will know where to go. this is almost a guaranteed perfect line for me every time. ALMOST.

make it count, son (sunny successor), Thursday, 14 October 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

yknow, my eyes are really round. i think that's why i have trouble doing this.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Thursday, 14 October 2010 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

I just free-hand it, balancing the ball of my wand-holding hand on the cheekbone of that side of the face. The left side is always less dependable b/c I'm right-handed, so I do the left first, see how it comes out, and then match the right side to it.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Thursday, 14 October 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

Whoa OK this is helpful--I guess I didn't know if I was supposed to pull my eyelid taut with my fingers, then try and pencil an uninterrupted line. Is it possible to do pencil liner without going back and doing some sort of smudging? Or er I mean is pencil liner meant to be smudged and should not be considered "done" until some sort of smudging takes place?

quincie, Thursday, 14 October 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

i do not always smudge

janice (surm), Thursday, 14 October 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

I do liquid (in my case cake with a wet brush to make liquid) eyeliner like Laurel! Wrist on cheekbone for leverage is key.

quincie, Thursday, 14 October 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

liquid liner looks really stark and me and i like to blend a little bit, so pencil liner is my thing

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Thursday, 14 October 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

^^^watched some youtube tutorials, will give it a go

In other news, youtube tutorials indicate that my interaction with the bumpit will no doubt be a complete disaster.

quincie, Thursday, 14 October 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

I bought a knock off bumpit for $1.99 and it has been useful creating Joan-esque updos! Gives me more volume at the back of my head.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 14 October 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

Ooh I used to have a soft silver eyeliner pencil and lost it. It was great though - need to get a new one. I never pull at my eyelids while putting on liner as it ends up with the line being like half an inch above the lash line!

Not the real Village People, Friday, 15 October 2010 05:32 (fifteen years ago)

laura mercier has a line of black/metallic liners - there's a really neat one that's black w/ gold so sometimes it looks black but when you turn into the light it's gold. v cool.

tehresa, Saturday, 16 October 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

that is cool. i want a silver highlighter. i've always wanted one. kind of like a gloss for the brow bone in silver.

janice (surm), Saturday, 16 October 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

i am almost out of moisturizer. not good.

amanda (surm), Saturday, 16 October 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

this is not really about makeup but i discovered this great drugstore moisturizer through makeup alley: Cerave. it is really, really good. a big bottle cost me about $18, and it seems like it's going to last a while. recommend!

horseshoe, Saturday, 16 October 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

^^^I use this, too! The PM version (no sunscreen, has nicotinamide). Like it a lot!

quincie, Sunday, 17 October 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

I dropped my NEW glass bottle of foundation on the bathroom floor AGAIN. Broken. AGAIN. ARRRRGHGHGHADF;LGJSDF;

This happens because the bathroom is small and has no storage, so I put in a tall shelving unit but when things are bumped off it or tip over, it's a long way down.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Sunday, 17 October 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

oh no :(

amanda (surm), Sunday, 17 October 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

Your screenname is starting to freak me out surm.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Sunday, 17 October 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

i've been exfoliating every day, 2x a day bc i ran out of regular face wash. my skin looks terrific but i think it's about to dry out

valerie (surm), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

thank you valerie/surm
i owe you one!

i should tell you guys that i am on a new routine of regular exfoliation with philosophy products and i think it's working pretty well! my skin looks brighter and less sun damagey.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Bought Nars lip lacquer in Eros colour - love it! My lips dry out w most lip stuff except lanolin - and top ingredient in this is lanolin - yaay pretty :)

Haven't been wearing foundation or blush or anything but la roche posay moisturizer and a bit of prescriptives camo cream (RIP - don't know what I'll do when this is finished up) and my skin is regaining so much clarity! phew. Also, rinsing face 10x w cold water after shower.

Yet still, want all this Nars makeup... so nice.

two weeks pass...

Just got a free sample of slightly shimmery white eyeshadow. How do I wear this?

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Monday, 22 November 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

I used to wear white eyeshadow on my eyelids as my only eye makeup (except for mascara, of course). It looked nice, but I decided I needed a more 'done' look as I got older.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

depends how shimmery, but maybe as a highlighter on the brow bone, with a darker colour on the outer corner of the lid?

just1n3, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

It's just standard eyeshadow shimmery, not like DISCO CRAZY or anything. I'll probably just put it all over the place tomorrow morning and see what happens.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

Is it glittery shimmery or shiny shimmery?

Shakey Sides (sunny successor), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

Hold on let me look.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

Shiny shimmery. More like a sheen than a shine, even.

It's this, in "Aspen Summit" - http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P241801&categoryId=S6300&shouldPaginate=true

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

I also got this eyeliner in "silver green," which I bet will end up making me look ill - http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P235502&categoryId=B70.
