i'm hesitant to say yes because i would worry more about looking like sarah palin than snooki
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)
I have asked myself the same question re the Bumpit. They're cheap, right? Now that my hair is longish probably gonna try one out.

Photos of hairsperiments w/ spin pins (which worked great today! looks messy b/c I need more practice) and the painful and dangerous Hairagami.
― Jaq, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:36 (fifteen years ago)
I pin-curled last night and I have awesome secretarial-pool curls today! Could have gotten a little bit better set by starting with wet hair instead of dry hair that I lightly moistened w my hands.
It's SO MUCH EASIER to make any pull-back w barrette or bobby pin styles look good when the ends make a big froth of bouncing curls instead of stick-like pokey bits.

When I tried to do it with wet hair it came out frizzy. I think they mention this on the video too. Just slightly moist hair is better.

sunny, I tried but I hated all the photos. Maybe it's the light in the office, which is deeply antagonistic toward human life forms.

i haven't combed my hair in a week+. i am enjoying having curls.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 23:23 (fifteen years ago)
I'm assuming that you have short hair.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)
yes
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
i combed it!
― The Reverend, Saturday, 9 October 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)
nothing done to my hair since trim in june. i think it's time for a trim again. so weird. i've never gone this long between cuts!
― tehresa, Saturday, 9 October 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)
ok i spotted these spin pins at CVS today, and grabbed the last pack - LOVE them! they really do go in smoothly and come out easily, and they're 100% secure.
― just1n3, Sunday, 10 October 2010 05:45 (fifteen years ago)
Really? I must be doing something wrong, then. I can't get them to stay in more than three hours, and that's only if I put the pins in horizontally (vertically, like the instructions say, lasts less than fifteen minutes). This is only if I use them in a bun near the top of my head; any other style I try falls out right away.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Sunday, 10 October 2010 22:06 (fifteen years ago)
are you using two at a time? i have really fine hair so often pins and things fall out really quickly, but these seem to stay in really well.
maybe try using a little mousse/gel/hairspray?
― just1n3, Sunday, 10 October 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)
I find they work better if I haven't just shampooed (only 1x/month or so now it's so long).
― Jaq, Sunday, 10 October 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)
lucky you! i wash mine every day! i just don't have the nerve to go the first painful 3 months to get to the normal unwashed stage - my hair is a greasy mess after about 36 hours.
― just1n3, Sunday, 10 October 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)
mine, too. i wash/condition every day. seems to be ok for me. i guess it varies depending on your hair. i think any damage is due to the blow drying more than daily washing.
― tehresa, Sunday, 10 October 2010 23:23 (fifteen years ago)
When I was first trying this out, I used a baking soda solution every three or four days and rinsed really thoroughly in the shower every morning. I still rinse it every morning, but stopped using the baking soda after a few months. I had a few uncomfortably greasy days early on, but it's going on 4 years now and I don't think my scalp has ever been healthier.
― Jaq, Sunday, 10 October 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)
Should probably point out that the no-shampoo thing for me was about horrendous scalp irritation/itching, not about hair per se.
― Jaq, Sunday, 10 October 2010 23:27 (fifteen years ago)
I am using two at a time--one at a time (like in some of the styles in the package) falls out right away. I don't want to use gel or hairspray because I'm worried that it would make my hair look bad when I take the pins out--I only wear my hair up for work and I always put it back down first thing when I get in the car afterwards. And going without washing my hair for more than a day makes my scalp itch. I might try having my husband put them in.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 11 October 2010 23:23 (fifteen years ago)
I trimmed a bit more than I meant to off the length on Sunday - Mr. Jaq was too terrified he'd screw it up and I couldn't see paying $$ to get the ends trimmed. Forgot about that "hair is longer when wet" deal, so took off 2" instead of 1". It's still long enough to put up, but just barely!
― Jaq, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)
I trimmed my bangs a bit shorter than I wanted for the same reason (not wanting to spend $$$ – My hair was dry and I still did them too short).

Guys how do I fix staticy hair? This is not cool. Not cool at all. :(
― master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)
Some sort of styling cream? Like Kiehl's silk groom or Bumble&Bumble styling cream (not sure of exact name). I think static only happens in pretty dry conditions, so getting some lube in there should help?
― quincie, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)
Leave-in conditioner? Wiping your hair with a dryer sheet?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:10 (fifteen years ago)
For emergency static fix, put on some hand lotion and very lightly run your hands over your hair, smoothing it, before the lotion has completely sunk in.
― Jaq, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:12 (fifteen years ago)
i just use a little bit of water, usually does the trick
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)
What was that stuff in the can? Oh yeah STATIC GUARD!
― quincie, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)
Now is the time of year (cold, dry) when I do NOT miss getting out of the old car and receiving a seriously painful shock. Every. Damn. Day.
― quincie, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)
I haven't been able to find Static Guard lately! I've been cautiously rationing out sprays from my last can.
― Jaq, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)
My mom kept a case of that stuff around the house when I was growing up, for real. lol 1970s ozone layer!
― quincie, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:17 (fifteen years ago)
btw, those Bounce free dryer sheets? That say "no dyes and perfumes"? They still have a ton of scent. I bought a box when I couldn't find Static Guard, to rub on my office chair - they have stunk up the desk.
― Jaq, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)
Ah, you Northern people with your dry and cool air. It's so cute.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)
Good suggestions. I employed the use of the handcream trick at work today. I'm going to get a really good conditioner and some styling cream as per Quincie's suggestion. Hopefully that will do the trick.
― master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)
got a trim on sat and i am not pleased with it :(
― tehresa, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)
What happened? Too short?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)
she took too much off, the layers look moronic around my face, and she just didn't even really ask me what i wanted before she started cutting. strange, because she trimmed it last time and was really attentive!
― tehresa, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)
Stylist etiquette q - I found a great salon near me, and used to see one particular stylist, E, who did my highlights and cuts. One time she wasn't available so I went with this other guy in the same salon, D. He was pretty good so I have been back to him a few times because he works more days so is usually around. However the last time was not so good and I want to go back to E. I went to E just for highlights a few days ago (just cos she did a great job last time) and D was also working. Will he be offended if I ask for E from now on? I don't really know how these salons work but it's an independent place and presumably the stylists work independently in there.
― Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)
he will probably be offended, stylists are really touchy about this stuff. but i say, in the end it's your hair, have the person of your choice do it!
― tehresa, Thursday, 18 November 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)
so sunny posted on some other thread about how she cuts her own hair, and i decided to follow her lead today and do the same, since i'm too cheap and lazy to go to a real stylist. i tied it up in a ponytail and cut off about 4"! and then i kind of tried to feather my bangs a little. it looks pretty good! i mean, it's not super amazing, but a super amazing hair cut only lasts 5mins on me anyway, since my hair grows out so damn fast and i'm not the greatest at styling it. now i think i should invest in a pair of thinning scissors!

i might not ever go to a hairdresser again!
finally getting a cut today. i picked a salon based on mostly favorable yelp reviews and being sort of in my price range (damn, salons around here are $$$). i'm nervous!
i really miss my old stylist! <3 u, cheri. plz move to dc.

I will rep for Ren33 at Fringe in Gtown. Not too $$ and great cut (though I'm no good at maintaining it).
