Really? Great! That's reassuring!

If you had highlights before and didn't get them with the permanent dye, it would look darker too. If it doesn't lighten up enough in a week, you could have some highlights put in around your face.
― Jaq, Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
I've had highlights in the past & then dyed my hair all one color...the bits w/highlights faded faster, resulting in sort-of-highlight.

Also - greetings stylish people, I'm trying to sort out what to do with my hair. It's longer than I've ever had it (below shoulders by maybe an inch), and I'm kind of enjoying that. Except, now I have to get a blow dryer and THINGS to put it up with. I bought these Hairagami things why b\c they look interesting. But they are unpredictable and seem dangerous, also heavy. I own 1 claw clip. Should I invest in bobby pins? I keep looking at vintage hair style books, but I don't think I'll ever be that put together.
― Jaq, Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)
I did get caramel-y highlights as well (same as last time) and they work fine with the darker colour. But I'd still prefer the underlying colour to lighten up a bit. Fingers crossed.
― ljubljana, Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)
Just go wash your hair a bunch of times, that's what causes it to fade.
― Mormons come out of the sky and they stand there (Abbbottt), Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)
Will do.
Jaq, I wish I could help here. I have no clue how to put my hair up, especially when it's in a mid-length rather than long bob.
― ljubljana, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:01 (fifteen years ago)
I wear a lot of nice hair toys while I'm at work. How thick is your hair?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)
It's fine, but it's fuller than I expected. Possibly because there are some growing-out layers in there. When I pull it back into a tail, it's maybe 1.25-1.5" diameter.
― Jaq, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)
pro-tip - anti dandruff shampoo strips out some but not all permanent hair color (ie lightens the early darkness a little faster)

You may need a few bobby pins or slider pins to keep those layers in line (if you want to--I have to for work). My hair is thin and fine, so there aren't a lot of things I can do with it. One thing I do do is to divide my hair into right and left halves on the back of my head, twist them upwards, and secure them at the top of my head (I use special clips intended for fine hair), leaving a few inches free as a ponytail. If this is a nerd or way out of date way to do hair, I'm sorry. At least I don't use scrunchies.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)
I think I need a weekend to just mess with hair. It doesn't help that I am used to not doing anything to it at all - it has been "comb it and run fingers through it in a general way" for years and years. Kind of intimidating to think about having to do more than that in the mornings tbh. Recently, I've just been twisting it up in back wet, slapping on the claw clip and leaving it.
It's getting long enough though that it sprouts out the top and I think I'm starting to look like a Dr. Seuss character.
― Jaq, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)
xpost thanks sunny. I'll definitely try that.
― ljubljana, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)
My hair's two inches below my shoulders I never blow-dry my hair, and unless I'm at work or are performing manual labor I never put it up. Does anyone have some ideas for interesting ways to put up fine, thin hair?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:43 (fifteen years ago)
Sunny! You have saved my weekend mood. Just three washes with anti-dandruff shampoo and there's a big difference.
― ljubljana, Saturday, 25 September 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, good.

Jaq, if the top is bothering you, I can't visualize yr current style, but are you anti-hairband? If you like how it looks when it's pulled back from your face (some people don't like their faces without bangs, I dunno) a nice wide band might hold things at bay and look clean. I have a tortoiseshell (plastic, of course) one about 2" wide that I like. If you wet the front, put a little part where you want it, and set the headband on top, the front stays very neat & looks polished.

In terms of short hair, I'm always jealous of people with curls, because they can pull little bits back and pin them and not have a riot of straight ends sticking out. Growing things out is tough with straightness! Inevitably there's a period where you feel like a just-hatched ostrich.
― I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)
I like the idea of that look, Laurel - I've been trying to see if I can get a scarf to work as a wide headband, but they are too slippery. I've also been fiddling with the "pull the sides back into a tail/wide barrette", which isn't a bad look, but is maybe more Little House on the Prairie than I think I want for work. I've invested in some combs and snap barrettes and wider slide barrettes, and will add a wide band to the mix.
― Jaq, Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)
Oh! I also found these spin pins that you basically screw into your wound-up hair! They seem to work really well at holding things neatly in place for awhile.
― Jaq, Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
I've never seen such a thing but they look intrsting! Of course I no longer have hair in the bun-length region. My issue, though, is that I don't like how it looks when my hair is pulled back tightly, I like a little height/looseness in the crown, so I had to secure the pieces with some slack in them and then bun up the rest.
― I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Sunday, 26 September 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)
hmmm i want to know more about how this spin pin thing works, i can't visualize it.
― just1n3, Sunday, 26 September 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)
There are 2 of them in the package - they are like a two-pronged open ended corkscrew. Kind of amazing. Also, maybe 4" long.
― Jaq, Sunday, 26 September 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
post pics of your experiments with them!
― just1n3, Sunday, 26 September 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)
Photos just of one of the pins on FB, here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=220439&id=817232998&l=2a6a81959d
You can't really see them once they are screwed into your hair - I've been trying to get a sort of french twist thing going, but I'm terrible at organizing stuff on the back of my head!
― Jaq, Sunday, 26 September 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)
hmm i still can't visualize how it works without getting all tangled up?? maybe i just need to buy one and play!
― just1n3, Sunday, 26 September 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
there are tutorials on YouTube like this one:

I want my hair to grow faster so that I can play with stuff like this.
― JuliaA, Monday, 27 September 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)
I've seen them in the store. I'm assuming that they don't work with thin hair.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 27 September 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)
I've heard that they work okay with thin hair, but they might stick out a little bit if your hair is really thin.
― JuliaA, Monday, 27 September 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)
YouTube! That's great, I never thought to look there for hair tutorials - I find stuff for knitting there all the time.
― Jaq, Monday, 27 September 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)
There's a ton of hair tutorials, for all sorts of hairstyles–complicated retro stuff, long hair options, all kinds of stuff.
Makeup tutorials on YouTube are really great too.
― JuliaA, Monday, 27 September 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)
My hair is really thin. Combs fall out and brushes scrape my scalp rather painfully. Maybe I'll go ahead and try them.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 27 September 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
And I will try those hair tutorials.

I'm obsessed! Here's another one -- this woman's hair is thick but I think the roll-up would work for thin too -- plus it captures different lengths and hides them away, so it can pull a lot of hair off your face. I think I have a project for 7am tomorrow.

oh yeah, I totally learned how to do pin curls from these youtube videos. I would like to wear my hair like that more often, but feel awkward walking past the park in my neighborhood where people are grilling and volleyballing and I look like I'm about to take dictation.

Should I get a bumpit y/n?

y! y!
― I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)
it won't make me look like snookie?
― quincie, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)
site says:
*Not recommended for children under 12
*Bumpits are not edible
Well fuck it if I can't eat it, no deal!
― quincie, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)
i'm hesitant to say yes because i would worry more about looking like sarah palin than snooki
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)
I have asked myself the same question re the Bumpit. They're cheap, right? Now that my hair is longish probably gonna try one out.

Photos of hairsperiments w/ spin pins (which worked great today! looks messy b/c I need more practice) and the painful and dangerous Hairagami.
― Jaq, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:36 (fifteen years ago)
I pin-curled last night and I have awesome secretarial-pool curls today! Could have gotten a little bit better set by starting with wet hair instead of dry hair that I lightly moistened w my hands.
It's SO MUCH EASIER to make any pull-back w barrette or bobby pin styles look good when the ends make a big froth of bouncing curls instead of stick-like pokey bits.

When I tried to do it with wet hair it came out frizzy. I think they mention this on the video too. Just slightly moist hair is better.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
sunny, I tried but I hated all the photos. Maybe it's the light in the office, which is deeply antagonistic toward human life forms.
