They're unpretentious and the cut is pretty flattering - they look perfect for a breezy sunny day

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

poochy stomach, flat butt, tapered-yet-baggy = flattering?!

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Those are trousers, they don't have a "stomach" - and how can you see the butt? have you enhanced and rotated?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

1) there are no pockets on the butt, which frequently leads to the appearance of a flat butt, esp. with such high waisted pants
2) pleats are like a little cave for poochy stomachs (ie normal stomachs). if a person has even the smallest pooch, pleats are basically an advertisement for that pooch. little fabric arrows pointing at one's pooch.

conclusion -- these pants are unflattering if you do not have a perfectly flat stomach or a perfectly round rear.

to the 3-4 people on whom this would be flattering, enjoy your high waisted pleated chambray jeans

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

Are you insane? Clothes don't cancel out the body underneath, skinny boy. Everyone has a stomach.

Those pants would look atrocious on 99% of women.

chambray is a plain weave
jeans are a denim weave

chambray <> jeans

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

whatever, denim pedant
these jeans are heinous

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

we aren't so far from those. if the cycle of fashion repeats 70-80s move from slim hip-hugger flares to high waisted pleated tapered poufy jeans repeats, skinny jeans having almost finished their run surely means you'll see someone wearing those without irony any day now.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

A lot of things come and go without ever breaking the "without irony" barrier. I'll be happy if these pants have their day among the tragically hip and then go away for another 15 years.

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

The girls are already wearing the shorts version of those jeans: high-waisted and pleated and possibly with cuffs, worn with oxford shoes of some kind probably mousy brown -- very "studenty". As soon as fall hits I'm sure the long versions will make the scene.

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

i am aware of fashion's cyclical nature, and i am aware that girls are wearing high waisted pleated shorts, BUT

* that doesn't change the fact that these pants are ugly as shit
* my inability to even consider wearing them means that i am not a candidate for shopping in the junior's section anymore

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

i probably shouldn't shop there anyway, and i don't really, because i don't really "shop" but you know what i mean

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 21:21 (fifteen years ago)

oh i love chambray pants, like those. so comfy too. great for airplane rides!

Many US companies began "vanity sizing" in the 80s, convincing people that they wore a smaller size than what the garment measures out to be (eg, a size 27" garment measures to a true 29"). Some brands (like Levi's) resisted this trend for over a decade until they saw their sales decrease because those brands "didn't fit" the consumer. European and Asian companies do not vanity size which may explain the variance.

To learn more about vanity sizing, take a tape measure and your favorite jeans and measure the waist and compare to the stated size.

Christ on a bolt of lightning, WHAT THE FUG are those? Small? SMALL?? The waist is like half the size of the hip measurement, how many people is THAT supposed to perfectly fit?

Dollars to doughnuts those are pinned in the back to make them perfectly fitted on the model. Will not work on anyone else in the world unless yr willing to go around with clothespins sticking out of your tuchus.

Zimbabwean cotton yarn is dyed using the labor intensive, classic rope dyeing technique involving a series of dips into indigo vats followed by sun drying (dipped 19 times). While most jeans makers today use right-hand twill denim, KMW denim is made in a selvedge 13.5 oz. left-hand twill. KMW fabric is woven on pre WWII American built wooden shuttle looms.

I want to buy some APC jeans but unfortunately nowhere sells them here so I can't try them on. this wouldn't ordinarily be an issue except... I recently bought some 32" waist zara jeans that fit nice however I picked up some 32" cos cords and though I can get them shut they're unbearably tight.

should I just go with the 32" in the APC knowing that I'll size down a bit as we come out of winter and they'll stretch out a bit?

joran van der snood (cozen), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

wish there was a "waistline Vs. actual waistline" infographic which took in zara and cos though I suspect cos' trousers are true to size.

joran van der snood (cozen), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

side question: are the uniqlo japan jeans decent? and is the japan slim fit similar to the APC new cures or new standards?

joran van der snood (cozen), Sunday, 2 January 2011 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

haha well how unbearable is 'unbearable'? apc tends to fit p true to size ime (i.e. less generous than probably zara) although i guess the cords might fit differently...

... i really cant answer this qn, sry :/

ban (Lamp), Sunday, 2 January 2011 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

the zaras I had did seem a little 'bigger' than other brands (though I had pants and not jeans)

right now my only pair of jeans is a pair of uniqlo selvedge based on steve shasta's recs and I like them a lot

anyone have any tips for sealing in jean color? I bought these AE flares on ebay and while they're surprisingly bitchin in color and form they are a saturated dark wash and I find my hands blue after wearing them for an hour or two. I really don't want them to fade.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Monday, 3 January 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

coz:
sounds like apc 32" will be comfortable, shouldn't be as unbearable as your Zara cords.
uniqlo denim are probably the best value jeans out there, in partic. if you are seeking japanese selvage denim.

ss:
you are describing "crocking" where the dye isn't set properly and causes bleedage. a quick rinse in (very) cold water should get most of the dye to bleed out but should not damage the richness of the denim. the key to keeping the dye set is to avoid washing/drying. neither cotton nor indigo are very colorfast so minimize the time in the wash/dryer to avoid fading.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 January 2011 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

actually found somewhere in town that does APC today and tried on the 32. were fine (but black) so going to cop some indigo online

joran van der snood (cozen), Monday, 3 January 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

w/ my last pair of colour-bleedy jeans i took the internet's advice and put them on a short cold wash, inside out, no detergent but half a cup of white vinegar, then hung them to dry indoors. it seemed to work - the colour's still dark and doesn't rub off on white bags any more.

cleo: dessins, cassettes (c sharp major), Monday, 3 January 2011 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

measure the actual waist of a pair of jeans that fit correctly
APCs run two inches larger in the waist than tagged size, and can stretch another inch or two beyond that

so if your actual waist = 36" you probably want a 33 in APC

ehhh, this is gray territory as everybody's idea of "fit" is not the same, some people enjoy an ultra skin tight girdle effect, others like to sag around their knees. APC use unsanforized denim that is "true to size" (ie, not ShrinkToFit), although there was a trend a few years ago to really undersize which would make for people squeezing into the smallest jeans possible, but that's a separate sport. I've owned about 10 pairs of APCs and they've all fit in the comfortable range of the size spectrum. YMMV.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

My size 36 APC New Standards measured 38" unworn and stretched rapidly to where they were downright baggy (if I'd known more then, I would have gotten a 35). Online shop measurements generally back that up - add two inches to tagged size to get the unworn waist. (and the denim is sanforized)

That's why I figure matching the actual waist size of some comfortable jeans to the actual waist of some APCs minus an inch or two (so that it would ultimately stretch to equal the other jeans, since the APCs won't be constantly washed like most people's Gap/etc. jeans) is the safest route.
