I do like the idea of a spat revival, though, j. Very much so.

pointy toes don't work so well for me. i wish i could just buy another pair of the 3cco biker boots i had a couple of years, but they make an updated version - of which i have a pair now - that aren't nearly as nice.
i LOVE spats. and legwarmers. they are basically a girl's bestfriend if she has fat ankles she doesn't want to show off (e.g. me).
those spats are on etsy, and they're REVERSIBLE!! http://www.etsy.com/listing/58280118/little-red-riding-spats-reversible
think i might get a pair.
― just1n3, Friday, 8 October 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
i like these too

i am a sucker for a wedge heel
― just1n3, Friday, 8 October 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)
My first impulse re the etsy spats, is that I would prefer them to have a strip of elastic under the shoe, right under your arch, because if they shifted just a little bit, that COOOOOOOLD winter breeze is going to right up your ankle. Better keep 'em in place from the start!
If you want biker boots, get the original Fryes, is my recommendation.

since she's an etsy seller, you could probably ask her to add some kind of stirrup? i want them in a deep olive green velvet/corduroy.

Those are spectator shoes, right?
― jed_, Saturday, 9 October 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, but Kate's "two tone wing tips" wasn't wrong either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectator_shoes

ok i am still waiting for the clarks to arrive, but now i am ALSO thinking i need cowboy boots! what is the consensus on these?
i've got my eye on these durango boots, since they are super cheap but apparently ridiculously comfy, according to 99% of reviews:

I'm a big fan of Justin ropers, got a pair in dark red and a pair in grey. They're great w/ pants and skirts/ dresses. Yours look nice too J. I'm loyal to Justin tho. I have 2 pr of their lacers as well.
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Sunday, 17 October 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)
Justine I tried on those Clarks recently and they're lovely. I had a certificate for a free pair of Clark's shoes and ended up going with different ones but those are ace.
― master of retardment (ENBB), Monday, 18 October 2010 10:20 (fifteen years ago)
Those triple-button Clarks boots are the cutest things ever, for real. I have so many nice boots but I'm not yet convinced it ever gets close to being cool enough here in Tucson to wear such things here. Maybe a few weeks in January, we'll see.
― 17th Century Catholic Spain (Abbbottt), Monday, 18 October 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)
the clarks are a no-go :(
the front part sticks out too much, i wanted something a little sleeker that would look cool with dresses, but these just didn't work.

Want to find IN A STORE today. Think I'll get lucky?
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 29 April 2011 16:27 (fifteen years ago)
i was wondering when penny loafers were going to come back!i used to wear the hell out of them when i was a kid, and i haven't seen them even though boat shoes are obvs here to stay
maybe old fashioned shoe store that carries brands for stubborn old people who buy a new pair of penny loafers when the old one dies? (ie my dad)
i looooved my black penny loafers so much in 8th grade
― deez m'uts (La Lechera), Friday, 29 April 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)
the word cordovan is so nice
laurel maybe a dept store like macy's?
― i can tina turner (elmo argonaut), Friday, 29 April 2011 16:34 (fifteen years ago)
So far via the internet, I can't find anywhere that carries Bass shoes in the city! Only outlets outside in the subrubs. Trying to call Macy's now but I saw someone else say oline that Macy's didn't have them either....
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 29 April 2011 16:41 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know if they're BACK, exactly, I just decided I want some. :)
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 29 April 2011 16:42 (fifteen years ago)
Also they never went out of style in some fringe subculture styles.
Really? Like the Downtown Preppy Crew o que? My dad has had his penny loafers resoled at least 3x. He'll be glad to brag about it if given the opportunity.

'60s stuff, Anglophiles.
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 29 April 2011 16:45 (fifteen years ago)
huhi always thought of them as WASPy prep shoes, like boat shoes/topsiders (?) basically
― deez m'uts (La Lechera), Friday, 29 April 2011 16:49 (fifteen years ago)
Oh they are. But there's crossover. Also, I'm wearing all my dancing shoes to ripped up stubs, and need sensible flat things with slippery bottoms that I won't roll my ankles in so
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 29 April 2011 17:00 (fifteen years ago)
tons of twee hipsters in sf wear them
― jaxon, Friday, 29 April 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)
David Z carries some Bass, but I don't think I've seen the penny loafers there, more of the saddle shoes. I've had good luck ordering directly from the Bass site though, if you want to give that a shot.

TOPSIDERS
― Yerac, Saturday, 30 April 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)
My loafers came today, which is YAY because I thought it would be another WEEK.
However the BOOOOOOOO is that they're CRAZY narrow. Serious. This is supposed to be "M", and M(edium) is the only width Bass makes for women, and they are TINY. I have extra room in the toes, but even with bare feet my insteps are wedged under steel bands in these things.

― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
aw dang! surely they will stretch a little, but maybe not enough?
― i can tina turner (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
Oh yeah, Bass tends to be pretty narrow. You could always donate them to me:)
― Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
NICE TRY, BRIGHT EYES.
No seriously I think I figured it out: they're not horribly narrow in the soles, but the vamps are cut assuming you have very flat arches. Like, there's no VERTICAL room in the band where the pennies go. It has no arch.
I'm stretching them at my desk with a large cone-shaped spool of thread and a staple remover jammed under it.
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:16 (fifteen years ago)
Darn your Yankee ingenuity.
― Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)
scored a pair of allen edmonds captoe oxfords yesterday for $7! in great condition except for a small gouge in the leather which i hope is repairable, but even if not, awesome thrift score. cordovan color but i don't think they are actually proper cordovan
― i can tina turner (elmo argonaut), Sunday, 8 May 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
my mister just got a pair of proper cordovan allen edmonds, and they really are a work of art!
― quincie, Monday, 9 May 2011 13:49 (fifteen years ago)
yeah come to think of it the fact that the leather is gouged pretty much confirms that they are not cordovan, huh
― i can tina turner (elmo argonaut), Monday, 9 May 2011 13:53 (fifteen years ago)
Laurel, Sissy Spacek was wearing the hell out of some penny loafers (among other things) in Badlands
