no camera :(...maybe i can rustle a picture up by making a friend take one.

horseshoe, Friday, 11 July 2008 14:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm so excited.. tomorrow I am going in to get my hair did! I'm going to get it dyed as bright and vibrant a red as she thinks I can pull off - I I think however instead of my recently angled bob (Justine Elastica) I may tell her to just make it a short, rounded bob (Donna Elastica) though.. I found after a week or two the long bit at the front started to behave poorly and curl itself :(

Me (and the boys.. and er, the girls..) - I figured I should post a midnight drunk picture, because that's my usual state. Any suggestions/criticism to what I wrote above are welcome! I think I am too heavy to pull off properly short hair.

cuet!!

tehresa, Friday, 11 July 2008 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i think you could manage short hair!

tehresa, Friday, 11 July 2008 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno - I'm so tall (6'1") that it starts to make me look like a professional woman's basket ball player ;)

http://photos-f.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v72/224/57/516053577/n516053577_39509_255.jpg - that's me in high school - but I think that was the best my short hair ever looked - and I have a cowlick so I can't do proper bangs.. oh, stupid genetics!

Finefinemusic, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh I also have a cowlick right in the middle of my bangs. I still think I look better with than without because I have a scar direcly in the center of my forehead. I straighten them but they look hilarious when it is the least bit humidity.

bell_labs, Saturday, 12 July 2008 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm being nagged to get mine cut again. should i bite the bullet or stick to my guns? it's still really short, by my standards.

g-kit, Saturday, 12 July 2008 09:22 (fifteen years ago) link

cut it!

rrrobyn, Saturday, 12 July 2008 11:53 (fifteen years ago) link

bell_lllabs your scar is so cool! i don't think you should have your hair cut or straighten yr bangs with the purpose of covering it up!

rrrobyn, Saturday, 12 July 2008 11:55 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah be like tina fey or harry potter and wear it with pride!

tehresa, Saturday, 12 July 2008 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

haha it is actually not that cool and looks like an acne scar (it is actually from tripping and hitting my head on a nail that was sticking out of the wall)

bell_labs, Saturday, 12 July 2008 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link

my coolest looking scar (a bunch of crazy scar tissue on my arm) is from rollerblading. like everyone is always "ooh what is that cool scar from it looks so tough" and i have to say "rollerblading". i have the lamest scars ever.

bell_labs, Saturday, 12 July 2008 19:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Let's have a thread about scars and gruesome-ness.

Laurel, Sunday, 13 July 2008 17:47 (fifteen years ago) link

don't wanna cut it ;_;

g-kit, Monday, 14 July 2008 08:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Well don't cry about it here, we're all for haircuts.

Laurel, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I got my red, but she.. barely cut my hair?? I may go back for a bang cut soon, but then I'm thinking - they're also almost as long as the rest of my hair - maybe it's time to grow them out! Anyway, I think that the colour actually makes my skin look less pink, which is good:

Finefinemusic, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I looks great!

I am so bored with my hair right now. I have no idea what to do with it. Ugh.

ENBB, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

hahah - that should have read IT looks great. I'm not looking so great today as a result of above hair complaint. Boo.

ENBB, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

LOL you looks great too ENBB ;) Thanks though!
I am kinda bored with my cut, had hoped the red would make it feel different.. but surprise, relatively same cut is relatively the same :P

Finefinemusic, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

love the red!

i am really bored, too. growing out is soooo boring that i'm like 4 min away from going back to my angled bob and a nice chocolate brown, though i've been thinking about some cool reds lately, too.

tehresa, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:57 (fifteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

i'm out of my devacurl, trying to figure out if i should buy more of it or something else (maybe kerastase?) my hair has been kinda greasy on the devacurl, i think. i am kind of paranoid about having greasy hair since i have been mocked for it before...i dunno. i hate my hair.

bell_labs, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

giovanni has some very nice sulfate-free shampoos. there is a tea tree oil (i think?) one that is more "clarifying" as well as a really nice moisturizing one. they both foam a lot more than devacurl. they are also like $6 instead of $17.

tehresa, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

my hair is still nice but i don't think it's as soft as when i was using deva shampoo.

tehresa, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i like the giovanni smooth as silk quite a bit. the fact that it's half the price of devacurl is a big point in its favor, though all things being equal i guess i do like dc a bit more. i just can't get over the price of kerastase. i know it's concentrated, but so is dc, and i don't really want to go back to an sls-based formula.

lauren, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i actually just bought a new bottle of devacurl bc even though giovanni is cheaper, i feel like the bottle of devacurl lasts longer and is overall a better shampoo. maybe it is psychological, though.

tehresa, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i bought giovanni 50/50 shampoo and conditioner yesterday ($1 off with your duane reade card!) but i am afraid it gave me dandruff today. all i know is that i shook my head during a meeting and a large flake fell off and it was embarrassing. i don't know if this can actually happen from using a shampoo for one day but my scalp feels abnormally dry.

bell_labs, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:31 (fifteen years ago) link

it's also pretty frizzy. but my hair is a disaster no matter what i use lately.

bell_labs, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:32 (fifteen years ago) link

hmm, i don't think a shampoo can give you dandruff after 1 use. did you have any styling products?

tehresa, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i found a shampoo called 'real solutions' today at dr that was like 5.99 and is sulfate-free. we wil see how this works out...

tehresa, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 23:36 (fifteen years ago) link

do you guys use conditioner with this low poo dealie?

sunny successor, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 02:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't need conditioner with devacurl lo poo, but i definitely do with the giovanni stuff.

yesterday i splurged and bought more kerastase stuff (off ebay, which seems to be the cheapest way)...i got the resistance ciment thermique, which is a leave in conditioner and heat protectant. for $30 bucks. i've never used a leave in conditioner so i'm kind of worried it will be too greasy.

i tried the concentre vita ciment earlier and didn't really get the magical results i was hoping for, but it's a salon treatment that came in little vials and i was probably just not doing it right.

my plan now is to grow out my hair for a couple more months and then get it cut at devachan.

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't use conditioner with devacurl, either, but i did use a leave-in serum after washing. with giovanni's smooth as silk (also sls-free), which is what i have currently, i use a conditioner.

lauren, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Am I the only person who wasn't all that impressed with Devacurl? I liked Giovanni.

Ok - I need recommendations for a haircut.

I have fine pin straight hair but TONS of it. It's almost at my shoulders now and it's so heavy and shapeless and I hate it. I look best with chin length cuts and have always (like since 9th grade) ended up with some variation of a graduated bob. I'm getting it cut next weekend and kind of want to try something new.

Anyone seen anything really great lately?

ENBB, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:03 (fifteen years ago) link

just wanted to check in & say that my haircut is growing in v. nicely -- lots of natural waves on top with minimal need for product -- though i think i might want to get the sides trimmed back soon

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:08 (fifteen years ago) link

has anyone tried taking supplements to grow their hair out faster? i have heard this actually works.

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I take 5 mg of biotin qd for hair/nails--one of the few supps that has shown an actual effect in actual clinical trials. Can't say I've noticed a huge difference, but it has only been a few weeks.

I found my fall haircut! It's bob-ish but with some stacking and BANGS (hence the wait until cooler weather prevails). Can't wait to go back to having an actual hairstyle instead of my wavy summer uber-casual unstyled look.

quincie, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Ok someone just came in the office and said he loved my hair and that by no means should I cut it. Now I'm wondering if I should maybe grow it. hmph. I don't know what to do! Not actually expecting answers on to cut or not to cut more just venting. Although I guess I could post short and not as shortish comparison pics.

ENBB, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:04 (fifteen years ago) link

ugh yes! i have been growing mine all summer and blow drying as little as possible bc of heat, but i just feel so sloppy! i know some people can pull off the breezy summer look, but i think i need more structure to balance the roundness of my face.
xpost

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

^ That's my problem too. It's not so much the length I dislike it's how unstructured and boring it mine looks right now.

ENBB, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:09 (fifteen years ago) link

ENBB was the person who told you this male or female? if it was a dude, i think you should feel free to disregard. /sexist

guys tend to have weird hang-ups about long hair.

lauren, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Mandee - it was a dude, yeah.

Lauren - yeah I know that's what I was thinking.

That's it - next weekend it gets chopped.

ENBB, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:21 (fifteen years ago) link

ugh yes with the guys/long hair

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

srsly. i hear they also like bangs. cept for the one time a guy in a bar said he would date any girl there who did not have bangs (everyone had hipster bangs).

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

they also are the number #1 offenders in curly hair hate crimes

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i have also noticed they tend to be magnetically attracted to blondes. yuck. (sorry to offend any blondes, it just gets old sometimes).
