No #2s for Limp Bizkit during these years, but we do get Fred Durst's only hit under his own name:

Tool vs... Jimmy Eat World

this is not a vs I ever thought I would write

Voting Jimmy Eat World, though "Sweetness" isn't close to their best.

Love "Sweetness", but I think I'll vote for one of the Incubus songs, which I both really dig. Heard "Stellar" the other day and only then realized that it samples the trippy intro from The Supremes' "Reflections" (which I also love), so that over "Wish You Were Here"

Frontier Psychiatrist, Monday, 2 June 2014 15:36 (nine years ago) link

the best dashboard confessional song vs. "we, blink-182, were really inspired by the beach boys for the harmonies in this song" vs. sweetness

I was happy whenever "Schism" came on the radio that summer. Then I went and sold my Tool albums to buy Trout Mask Replica, which no longer seems like such an obviously worthwhile exchange. They've aged pretty well.

Wow, Blink really cemented themselves as the CCR of the modern rock chart in terms of frequently getting stuck at #2 (though they did hit number one, which CCR never did on the Hot 100)

Frontier Psychiatrist, Monday, 2 June 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

Voted for "Feeling This" with "Stellar" and "Sweetness" very close behind. Despite the #1's being generally shitty during this period, I can mostly stand these. Surprised that Smashing Pumpkins could still sneak up #2 so many years after their peak.

LimbsKing, Monday, 2 June 2014 16:19 (nine years ago) link

Heard "Stellar" the other day and only then realized that it samples the trippy intro from The Supremes' "Reflections" (which I also love)

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Monday, 2 June 2014 16:33 (nine years ago) link

I voted "Schism". Not because I love the song (it's mediocre "Tool" at best), but because I dislike all of the others.

The Offspring – "Original Prankster"

stop trying to make 'catch phrase' rawk a genre!

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Monday, 2 June 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

Fuck this era IMO.

"Original Prankster" one of the all-time worst to make this chart position, and god, "Outside" was an inescapable dirge. I'm sure I've complained elsewhere about "Loser" being strummed by dudes in dorm stairwells though at least it has the bones of a real song. Blink's contributions are all right, not their finest (and I have no use for "Adam's Song," and can't remember "Feeling This"). "Rock Show" probably the last time they swung close to the "Josie" glory days.

"Stand Inside Your Love" and "Ex-Girlfriend" are momentum/loyalty hits - they both pretty much disappeared I think except for people who loved Return of Saturn. I don't hate the Pumpkins track but it being in the same position as "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" (and higher than "Today," "Disarm," "Cherub Rock," "Zero" and "Tonight, Tonight") is laughable - the market had bottomed out and anything that even fit the radio format was going to end up a "hit" though not for long: the pathetic followup single did not chart, and No Doubt's attempts got to #94 and #79. Sadly, the Creed songs actually were as big as this list suggests, maybe bigger given that the album went platinum ten times over. Kinda surprised not to see Kid Rock here, on similar grounds.

Would kinda be inclined to toss SR-71 a vote for at least bringing some energy to the table, but they're the poor man's Sum 41 (amazed "In Too Deep" stalled at #10!), who are already the poor man's Blink to an extent. I think "Schism" is the only song here that's actually pretty cool so I'm voting that. A seven-minute #2 hit - now that's metal. If these other assholes had been putting out songs like that I might not have stopped listening to the radio in 2001.

macklin' rosie (crüt), Monday, 2 June 2014 18:16 (nine years ago) link

back when Mark from Blink 182 hosted a show on Fuse he interviewed RHCP and they talked about how the Chili Peppers blocked Blink from #1 on this chart several times and it was like this faux-feud running joke

voted no doubt though yeah that single was pure first single from big followup momentum getting it that high and it was chosen cuz it's the most 'here's a no doubt' single they had, plus they got to play w/ the band drama a little. love the other singles alot more though, esp 'simple kind of life', such tender banality and pathos. video was pretty great, gwen never looked better.

balls, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:58 (nine years ago) link

Had to represent Arizona and vote Jimmy Eat World. Saw them play a political rally a couple of years back; they were opening for Bill Clinton and Sweetness was the lead-off track.

intheblanks, Monday, 2 June 2014 23:16 (nine years ago) link

Followed by a new song and closing with "The Middle," obviously.

"Hash Pipe"

Bee OK, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 02:31 (nine years ago) link

The videos for the two Creed songs in this poll are great to watch for an easy laugh – Scott Stapp dodges CGI meteors in "With Arms Wide Open" and "My Sacrifice" pretty much speaks for itself, too many lol moments to take note of:

Frontier Psychiatrist, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 04:14 (nine years ago) link

Apparently "the first video that Creed had complete creative control over" (says Wikipedia), and it really shows

Frontier Psychiatrist, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 04:16 (nine years ago) link

That was pretty much one of the stupidest videos I've ever seen.

Don't mind the song too much. Has a Kasmir thing going on right at the end of the bridge.

LimbsKing, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 11:04 (nine years ago) link

This was probably the last era I got any enjoyment out of modern rock radio.

No Doubt – "Ex-Girlfriend"
Weezer – "Hash Pipe"
Tool – "Schism"
Incubus – "Wish You Were Here"
Jimmy Eat World – "Sweetness"

These were all favorites at the time and I was still listening to the radio on purpose, even though there was a lot of Staind and Limp Biscuit mixed in.

how's life, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:36 (nine years ago) link

"My Sacrifice" video is so totally amazing. Also one of those rare instances where the single from the 'beginning of the end' backlash period is really better than their peak era hits.

Voted for Wish You Were Here, btw. Despite the scratch fills that I knew were weak even back then, I love the guitar riff under the verses and the chorus is a monster.

how's life, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:44 (nine years ago) link

I don't get No Doubt but "A Simple Kind of Life" is nice. Wish it were on this list.

Voted for -- god -- Weezer.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:45 (nine years ago) link

Weezer has several surprisingly good '00s singles imo but def not "Hash Pipe"

Photograph, Simple Pages, Keep Fishin' are my favorites from the (first?) Weezer comeback era.

LimbsKing, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:13 (nine years ago) link

If we're going to talk 'ridiculous Creed CGI videos' there really is only one, the big heavy single from the closest they have to a New Jersey:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDP8p7mRcsI

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:57 (nine years ago) link

Only thing preventing Weathered from being a true New Jersey is the fact that they broke up after the touring cycle and didn't record another album for 7 years.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:06 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Also nobody would remember even the biggest single even if prompted. Might actually be a Fairweather Johnson, I dunno.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link

i totally remember what "my sacrifice" and "one last breath" sound like, unfortunately

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:11 (nine years ago) link

Oh yeah true, I kinda lumped that in with the previous record by mistake! To be fair, Human Clay singles campaign took a smooth handoff from My Own Prison lineup - basically just felt like one continuous three-year period of Creed being a gigantic rock band, and then just...going away.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:12 (nine years ago) link

Dear God, that "Bullets" video... imagine if the full-length Creed video game had actually seen the light of day.

Frontier Psychiatrist, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, but it still sold 6.5 million, which is a pretty big number and more than half its predecessor. It's hard for me to classify it as a Fairweather Johnson, which sold less than 20% of what Cracked Rear View did.

intheblanks, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

@Doctor Casino that's why I've always liked the N.O.R.E. line about how he's going to "sell more records than Creed." It's such an effective timestamp on "Nothin.'"

intheblanks, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:15 (nine years ago) link

Photograph, Simple Pages, Keep Fishin' are my favorites from the (first?) Weezer comeback era.

I enjoy a decent amount of Weezer's post-comeback output (still dig "Hash Pipe" and the Green Album singles), and some of the singles from Maladroit onwards are some of my personal favorites from their whole discography: "Island in the Sun", "Keep Fishin'", "Perfect Situation", "Dreamin'" and "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" (which will turn up in the next #2s poll with the far inferior "Troublemaker")

Frontier Psychiatrist, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 17:27 (nine years ago) link

Schism was the first song I learned to play on bass that I was proud of so it has some attachment for me - comparing it to the rest of Tool's output it is pretty weak though.
I'll probably vote for one of the Incubus cuts. I really enjoyed some of their early stuff when it came out but haven't thought to pick up their last couple albums.

I still wind up my best friend about him loving The Offspring as much as he did back then. Oh man, looking back so much of that stuff disappoints.

By the way the correct answer is ROCK SHOW as I determined from listening to all four of these entries back to back on Youtube

ascai, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 22:44 (nine years ago) link

I think I would rank the five Blink #2s (including the one from previous poll) as:

1. What's my age again?
2. Feeling this
3. Adam's song
4. Man overboard
5. The rock show

LimbsKing, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 13:35 (nine years ago) link

"What's My Age Again?" > "Feeling This"/"The Rock Show" > "Man Overboard"/"Adam's Song"

Too difficult for me to give each song an individual ranking, and if one were to throw in "Stay Together for the Kids" with them that would be even tougher
