By far the smallest number of options so far in any of these polls, though almost thrice as many tracks ended up stalling at #4 during these years (including Alanis Morissette's "Ironic", Merril Bainbridge's "Mouth", Joan Osborne's "One of Us", R. Kelly's "Down Low", Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life", Bone Thugs-n-Harmony's "Look Into My Eyes", LSG's "My Body", and the Spice Girls' "2 Become 1", among others).

really Tracy Chapman is the only stinker

Ha -- I voted for Chapman. The Quad City DJ's seemed to be created to fill a slot on an MTV Jock Jams CD.

"Say You'll Be There" may be even more perfect than "Wannabe."

yeah, "say you'll be there," which i think came out when i was in fifth grade and i would shift about whenever we'd get in line to walk to the cafeteria bc it was in my head and i wanted to dance

spice girls pretty easy w/ new edition a somewhat distant second. that quad city dj's won p&j! still the most popist win imo, over 'mmmbop' and 'call me maybe'. i'm ok w/ that chapman, it's amusing to me that the final resting place of blooze in terms of the pop chart would be as accent touches on certain lilith fair hits (thinking of some of the natalie merchant hits from this time), apparently she played it on snl when she was on it back in either 89 or 88.

That Chapman song may have been the biggest recurrent hit in my lifetime. I swear, that song never went off the radio between spring '96 and 2001.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 April 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

pretty sure more people know her for "Give Me One Reason" than "Fast Car."

Hmmm, I always presumed that "Fast Car" was the more famous of the two.

Either way, not voting for Chapman. On first instinct I'd have easily gone for the Quad City DJ's (hard to believe that they topped Pazz & Jop!), because I'm a sucker for the whole wave of Miami bass hits from the 90s ("Whoomp/Whoot There It Is", "Tootsee Roll", "Da Dip", etc.). But I'm also thinking of throwing in a vote for the Keith Sweat track, which I have a feeling will be overlooked in this poll.

Voted for "Nobody", and I stand by it, but had totally forgotten how good "Hit Me Off" is.

As for "Loungin", the hit version is the one with Total (also the video), right? - or was the original version (which samples "Nite and Day") played on US radio as well:

Long ago someone gave me a tape of Tracy Chapman's demos, around the time her first album was a hit, and an acoustic boom-box demo of "Give Me One Reason" was on there. Much better than the finished version, too.

hmmm, that was a "Question". (© Yemi Alade, "Johnny")
